Next time you make a phone call or send a text message, think of Alexander Graham Bell.‎ Bell invented the first telephone but he didn’t really mean to. He was much more interested in helping deaf people and trying to design something that would help them ‎ hear. As a boy, Bell did not seem like a future inventor; he devoted himself to nature, poetry and music. He even taught himself to play the piano with which he entertained his family.‎ When Bell was 12, he noticed his mother was becoming deaf. It was the concern for his mother’s deafness that led Bell to study sound and how it is made and communicated. Bell’s father, a famous writer, encouraged Bell’s interest in this field. Once Bell was taken by his father to see a demonstration (演示) of a very primitive kind of speaking robot invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone. Bell and one of his brothers made their own version of the robot and managed to make it talk—this happened while Bell was still a teenager.‎ The next few years saw great changes in Bell’s life. The family moved from his birthplace in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Canada. Bell eventually continued his work with deaf people in Boston, Massachusetts where Bell decided to focus on experiments with sound machines. Bell hired Thomas Watson as his assistant, and in 1875 they invented the world’s first telephone. The quality of the sound was awful by today’s standards but Bell had designed something that would change the way we communicate forever.‎ Bell went on to make many more inventions in various fields including an air conditioner and a very early type of plane. However, it is as the inventor of the telephone that Alexander Graham Bell will forever be remembered.‎ ‎21. When Bell was a child, which of the following was he least interested in?‎ A. Science. B. Poetry. C. Music. D. Nature.‎ ‎22. Bell invented the first telephone in order to .‎ A. remember his mother B. make a speech C. help the deaf D. become famous ‎23. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?‎ A. It was the concern for his mother’s illness that made him study sound.‎ B. Bell’s father played an important part in developing his interest in sound.‎ C. Bell and one of his brothers invented the world’s first telephone in 1875.‎ D. Bell was also involved in inventing an air conditioner.‎ ‎24. From the last paragraph we can infer that .‎ A. the air conditioner and the plane were ignored at that time B. the telephone was the most important one among his inventions C. Bell’s inventions in other fields were of no use at all D. the telephone was invented after all the other inventions had been made B Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But, according to a new study, we should be placing a higher value on motherhood (母亲身份) all year.‎ Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now, the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as £ 172,000 a year.‎ The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours they are working, to determine the figure. This would make tier yearly income £ 30, 000 more than the Prime Minister earns.‎ By analysing the numbers, it found the average mother works 119 hours a week, 40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18, it found that, on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and finished at around 11 pm.‎ To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour, it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on, including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part-time lawyer, at £ 48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable (赚钱的) of the “mum jibs”, with psychologist (心理学家) a close second (紧随其后).‎ It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 percent making emotional (情感的) demand as the hardest thing about motherhood.‎ Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends.‎ The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother’s Day. The ‎ emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness. Investing (投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.‎ ‎25. How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?‎ A. £ 30,000. B. £ 202,000.‎ C. £ 172,000. D. £ 142,000.‎ ‎26. The biggest challenge for most mothers is from .‎ A. emotional demand B. low pay for work C. heavy workload D. lack of training ‎27. What is stressed in the last paragraph?‎ A. Mothers’ importance shows in family all year long.‎ B. The sacrifices (奉献) mothers make are huge but worthwhile.‎ C. Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated.‎ D. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.‎ ‎28. What can we conclude from the study?‎ A. Mothers’ working hours should be largely reduced.‎ B. Mothers should balance their time for work and rest.‎ C. Mothers’ labour is of a higher value than it is realised.‎ D. Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.‎ B Experts believe that there are about 40,000 different types of jobs in the world. Choosing the right one is a difficult job in itself.‎ ‎“Finding a job” is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people end up in a job that they are not suited to. “Chance” may play a more important part than “decision”. So here are a few steps to help you think about jobs, which you might enjoy doing after school or university.‎ First, it is important to recognize what kind of person you are and which special qualities make you different from everyone else.‎ To examine your skills and abilities even further, ask yourself this question: in the following three areas—skills with people, skills with information or skills ‎ with things— which are your best skills?‎ You may have noticed something while you are doing this task. The point is that there is a difference between an interest and a skill. If you like and enjoy looking at pictures, it is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse and not a big dog, that is a skill. The best job is one that uses your skills in something that you are interested in. In addition to this, it is an advantage if you believe that a particular job is worth doing in the world.‎ After that, the next step is research. To find out as much as possible about different kinds of work, go to the library, and read books, magazines and newspapers. Ask your friends about the work they do. If you are interested in banking, it is better to talk to a bank clerk who is twenty-four, rather than a bank manager who is sixty-four. Do not rely on your parents’ friends for information. A younger person will be able to describe a normal day at work and tell you about the interesting or boring things when you first start working.‎ Finally, trust your own ideas and your own thinking! It is your own life, so find something that you enjoy doing.‎ ‎29. The difference between “finding a job” and “choosing a job” lies in .‎ A. finding a job is a decision while choosing a job is a chance B. finding a job is more important than choosing a job C. a job that you find is one that is more suitable for you than one that you choose D. a job that you choose is based on your decision and suits you while one that you find often isn’t ‎30. What is the first step to find a job that suits you well?‎ A. The first step is to recognize what kind of person you are and which special qualities make you different from everyone else.‎ B. The first step is to find out as much as possible about different kinds of work.‎ C. The first step is to ask your friends about the work they do.‎ D. The first step is to consider your parents’ advice.‎ ‎31. All the things are ways of research about different kinds of work except .‎ A. go to a library and refer to books B. turn to your friends for help C. turn to your parents’ friends for advice D. talk to a younger person for information D For most of his life, Daniel Defoe worked as a businessman. However, when he was 60, he wrote something that was a great success. It was Robinson Crusoe, the first novel in English literature.‎ Why do we say that Robinson Crusoe was the first novel in English literature? Novels are full-length invented stories. But even if the events and people in the story are invented, they are described in a way that makes them seem real. Before Robinson Crusoe, nobody in English literature had written a story like that. In Robinson Crusoe, Defoe describes Robinson’s adventures in great detail. It seems that the writer is talking to the reader. In the early 1 8th century, most writers wrote in a complex style that was very different from the way people talked. Critics at the time didn’t like the style of Robinson Crusoe. They didn’t understand that Defoe had created something new in literature.‎ Robinson Crusoe is not only an exciting story but also a great novel. It makes the reader think about important questions about life. One interesting idea in the book is about the relationship between individuals and society. Robinson lives alone on an island. He is free to live any way he wants, but he chooses to live as a civilized man. Another interesting idea in the book is how people need one another in society. On the island, there is nobody to help Robinson. He has to do everything himself. He has to learn how to be a builder, a farmer and how to make clothes and shoes. This experience teaches Robinson how we all need the help of experts. The idea of value is also discussed in the book. When Robinson goes back to the sunken ship, looking for things that could be useful, he picks up some gold and says, “This is no use to me.” He understands that something has value only if it is useful.‎ Robinson Crusoe was the first novel in English literature. It was also the first best- seller. When he wrote the story, Defoe changed English literature for ever.‎ ‎32. What was Daniel Defoe probably famous as in his life according to the passage?‎ A. A businessman. B. A builder.‎ C. A farmer. D. A novelist.‎ ‎33. Which statement is NOT right about the novel Robinson Crusoe?‎ A. It s the first full-length novel in English literature.‎ B. The events and people in the story are all real.‎ C. The story was about a person’s adventures on an island.‎ D. Critics at that time didn’t like the style of the story.‎ ‎34. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph in this passage?‎ A. The three ideas written in the novel Robinson Crusoe.‎ B. How Robinson lived on the lonely island.‎ C. The readers’ opinions about the character Robinson.‎ D. How we can live on an island alone.‎ ‎35. The main purpose of the text is to tell us .‎ A.
