But where are we doing all of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the issue, let’s take a look at three types of “waits”.‎ The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most annoying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink(洗碗池) as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it’s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless.‎ A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of self-control. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup required a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer(用文火炖)three minutes, remove from heat, let stand five minutes.”I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all, Forced Waiting requires patience.‎ Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.‎ Turning one’s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optimists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn’t come to rely on it, wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody.‎ We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you’re ‎ standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you’ll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don’t be desperate. You’re probably just as busy as the next guy.‎ ‎4. While doing a Watched-Pot Wait, we tend to ___________.‎ A. keep ourselves busy B. get absent-minded C. grow anxious D. stay focused ‎5. What is the difference between the Forced Wait and the Watched-Pot Wait?‎ A. The Forced Wait requires some self-control.‎ B. The Forced Wait makes people passive.‎ C. The Watched-Pot Wait needs directions.‎ D. The Watched-Pot Wait engages body and brain.‎ ‎6. What can we learn about the Lucky-Break Wait?‎ A. It is less voluntary than the Forced Wait.‎ B. It doesn’t always bring the desired result.‎ C. It is more fruitful than the Forced Wait.‎ D. It doesn’t give people faith and hope.‎ ‎7. The author supports his view by _________.‎ A. exploring various causes of “waits”.‎ B. describing detailed processes of “waits”.‎ C. analyzing different kinds of “waits”‎ D. revealing frustrating consequences of “waits”‎ ‎【答案】4. B 5. A 6. B 7. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless.‎ ‎(在这些等待过程中,思绪会从身体中溜走,四处游荡,直到水从柜台边缘流到你的袜子上。 A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of self-control.(与关注式等待类似的是强迫等待。 故选A。 Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.(不像强迫等待,这也是自愿的,等待你的幸运并不一定意味着它会发生。) To understand the issue, let's take a look at three types of waits.(为了理解这个问题,我们来看一下三种类型的“等待”。) C。‎ C It was the final climb on his search to reach the highest top on all seven continents. When Christopher Kulish finally reached Mount Everest’s 29,035-foot peak, he joined an elite group known as the “Seven Summits Club”(七峰俱乐部). But the 62-year-old Colorado attorney died suddenly Monday after returning to the first camp below the mountain’s summit. He’s the second American to die in the past week after reaching Everest’s highest point. His family believes the cause was a heart attack, according to theDenver Post. “He saw his last sunrise from the highest peak on Earth,” his brother, Mark Kulish, said in a statement to the Denver Post. “We are heartbroken at this news.”‎ Last week, 55-year-old Donald Lynn Cash of Utah collapsed and died just after reaching the Everest peak. He too had reached the highest point on all seven continents. Including Christopher and Cash, at least 11 people have died on Mount Everest this year.‎ The deaths come among reports of overcrowding on the popular mountain. The Nepali government granted a total of 381 permits to climb Everest this year, a number that ‎ doesn’t include guides who are on the mountain as well. For some climbers, that traffic has meant longer wait times — some told the Himalayan Times the wait has been over two hours between the last camp and the peak. Mountaineer Vanessa O’Brien, who has also climbed the seven summits, said when there’s a crowd, being a more experienced climber won’t help you. “It doesn’t matter if you’re the best racecar driver in the world. If you’re stuck in traffic, you’re stuck in traffic,” she said in an interview.‎ And when a climber is stuck in that traffic, “their body is starting to deteriorate(恶化).” O’Brien, who set a record as the fastest woman to reach the highest peak on every continent, also said the descent(下降) is often harder than the climb.‎ Climbing expert Alan Arnette said there’s no simple explanation for the string of deaths. He said weather that has led to a shorter climbing season is one factor causing overcrowding. He also said the cost to climb Mount Everest has decreased, which means more people are making the journey. He urged the governments in charge of granting(同意)permits to limit how many people can be on the mountain at once.‎ Still, Christopher was no beginner. His family said he’d been mountain climbing for five decades. He arrived at the base camp nearly two months before his climb so he could give himself time to adapt to the conditions. When he made his journey, his family said he was climbing with a small group in almost ideal conditions after some of the overcrowding had cleared.‎ His brother described being a lawyer as a “day job” for Christopher. Climbing was his love. “He was an inveterate climber of peaks in Colorado, the West and the world over,” Mark Kulish said. “He passed away doing what he loved.”‎ ‎8. What made longer wait times on Mount Everest?‎ A. Lacking guides. B. Overcrowding.‎ C. Bad weather. D. Getting government’s permission.‎ ‎9. What might cause the string of deaths according to Alan Arnette?‎ a. The less cost attracting more climbers.‎ b. The more climbers worsening the environment.‎ c. More permits granted by the government.‎ d. The governments limiting the climber’s number.‎ e. The weather leading to a shorter climbing season.‎ A. a, b, d. B. a, c, e.‎ C. b, c, d. D. b, d, e.‎ ‎10. Why did Christopher arrive at the base camp so early before climbing?‎ A. To wait for his friends. B. To learn about the mountain.‎ C. To clear the traffic jam. D. To adapt to conditions earlier.‎ ‎11. What does the underlined word “inveterate” in the last paragraph probably mean?‎ A. Experienced. B. Famous.‎ C. Excellent. D. Addictive.‎ ‎【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. The deaths come among reports of overcrowding on the popular mountain.(有报道称,这座颇受欢迎的山峰过于拥挤,造成了这些死亡。) For some climbers, that traffic has meant longer wait times — some told the Himalayan Times the wait has been over two hours between the last camp and the peak.(对一些登山者来说,这样的拥挤意味着更长的等待时间——一些人告诉《喜马拉雅时报》,从最后一个营地到山顶已经等了两个多小时。) Climbing expert Alan Arnette said there’s no simple explanation for the string of deaths. He said weather that has led to a shorter climbing season is one factor causing overcrowding. He also said the cost to climb Mount Everest has decreased, which means more people are making the journey. He urged the governments in charge of granting permits to limit how many people can be on the mountain at once.‎ ‎(攀登专家艾伦·阿内特说,这一连串的死亡并没有简单的解释。 故选a, c和e。 He arrived at the base camp nearly two months before his climb so he could give himself time to adapt to the conditions.(为了给自己时间适应环境,他在登山前两个月到达了大本营。) 根据最后段上文Climbing was his love.可知登山是Christopher的爱好;以及后of peaks in Colorado, the West and the world over可知Christopher攀登过科罗拉多、西部和世界各地山峰,是一位铁杆的登山爱好者。 D。‎ D ‎“What kind of rubbish are you?” This question might normally cause anger, but in Shanghai it has brought about complaints over the past week. On July 1st, the city introduced strict trash-sorting regulations that are expected to be used as a model for our country. Residents must divide their waste into four separate kinds and put it into specific public bins. They must do so at scheduled times, when monitors are present to ensure compliance(服从)and to inquire into the nature of one’s rubbish.‎ Violators face the possibility of fines and worse. They could be hit with fines ‎ of up to 200 yuan ($29). For repeat violators, the city can add black marks to their credit records, making it harder for them to obtain bank loans or even buy train tickets.‎ Shanghai authorities are responding to an obvious environmental problem. It generates 9 million tonnes of garbage a year, more than London’s annual output and rising quickly. But like other cities in China, it lacks a recycling system. Instead, it has relied on trash pickers to sort out the waste, picking out whatever can be reused. This has limits. As people get wealthier, fewer of them want to do such dirty work. The waste, meanwhile, just keeps piling up. China produces 80 billion pairs of disposable(一次性的)chopsticks a year.‎ Many residents appear to support the idea of recycling in general but are frustrated by the details. Rubbish must be divided according to whether it is food, recyclable, dry or hazardous(有害的), the differences among which can be confusing, though there are apps to help work it out. Some have complained about the rules surrounding food waste. They must put it straight in the required public bin, forcing them to tear open plastic bags and toss it by hand. Most upset are the short windows for throwing trash, typically a couple of hours, morning and evening. Along with the monitors at the bins, this means that people go at around the same time and can keep an eye on what is being thrown out; no one wants to look bad.‎ ‎12. What does the underlined word “Violators” in Paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A. People who don’t sort the waste.‎ B. People who argue with the monitors.‎ C. People who don’t throw the trash on time.‎ D. People who are against the regulations.‎ ‎13. What is the main direct environmental problem in Shanghai?‎ A. The massive traffic. B. The increasing garbage.‎ C. Lack of a recycling system. D. Lack of trash pickers.‎ ‎14. What makes the residents upset most about the rules?‎ A. Complex distinction among the four categories of trash.‎ B. Short scheduled time for throwing the trash.‎ C. Being observed by monitors when throwing the garbage.‎ D. Being fined when blamed due to improper behavior.‎ ‎15. What can be the best title for the text?‎ A. A Restart of Trash-sorting B. A Great Change in Tackling Litter C. New Times of Garbage Classification D. A Craze for Learning Waste Sorting ‎【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. They could be hit with fines of up to 200 yuan ($29). Shanghai authorities are responding to an obvious environmental problem. It generates 9 million tonnes of garbage a year, more than London’s annual output and rising quickly.(上海政府正在应对一个明显的环境问题。 Most upset are the short windows for throwing trash, typically a couple of hours, morning and evening.(最让人心烦的是扔垃圾的短暂开放期,通常是早上和晚上的几个小时。) On July 1st, the city introduced strict trash-sorting regulations that are expected to be used as a model for our country.
