Facebook then attempts to make money by selling their data to advertisers that want to send targeted messages. Most Facebook users don’t realize this is happening. Even if they know what the company is up to, they still have no idea what they’re paying for Facebook, because people don’t really know what their personal details are worth. The biggest problem, however, is that the company keeps changing the rules. Early on, you could keep everything private. That was the great thing about Facebook—you could create your own little private network. Last year, the company changed its privacy rules so that many things—your city, your photo, your friends’ names—were set, by default(默认), to be shared with everyone on the Internet. According to Facebook’s vice-- president Elliot Schrage, the company is simply making changes to improve its service, and if people don’t share information, they have a “less satisfying experience.” Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money. Its original business model, which involved selling ads and putting them at the side of the page, totally failed. Who wants to look at ads when they’re online connecting with their friends? The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April, Senator(议员) Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged the Commission to set guidelines for social-networking sites. “I think the senators rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,” Schrage admits. I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade our privacy, it’s only the beginning, which is why I’m considering deactivating(撤销)my account. Facebook is a handy site, but I’m upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I don’t know. That is too high a price to pay. 21.What do we learn about Facebook from the first paragraph? A. It is website that sends messages to targeted users B. it makes money by putting on advertisements C. It provides loads of information to its users D. It profits by selling its users’ personal data 22.Why does Facebook make changes to its according to Elliot Schrage? A. To provide better service to its users B. To follow the Federal guidelines C. To improve its users’ connectivity D. To expand its scope of business 23.What does Senator Charles Schumer advocate(主张)? A. Setting guidelines for advertising on websites B. Banning the sharing of users’ personal information C. Removing ads from all social—networking sties D. Formulating (制订)regulations for social—networking sties 24.Why does the author plan to cancel his Facebook account? A. He is dissatisfied with its current service B. He doesn’t want his personal data abused C. He finds many of its users untrustworthy D. He is upset by its frequent rule changes B A new study reported in a medical magazine concludes that even smokers who reach their 70s are likely to live longer if they stop smoking. Researchers say that they have got some of the strongest evidence (证据) that it's never too late to stop smoking. The study was based on a five-year follow-up of 7, 178 people over the age of 65 who lived in Boston, New Haven and Washington counties in Iowa. The report showed former smokers ran about the same risk of death from heart disease as those who never smoked. Women who stopped smoking faced about the same cancer-death risk as those who never smoked, but men who gave up smoking still had a 50% higher risk. The men's extra risk of cancer largely disappeared if they had not smoked for more than 20 years. The discovery does not agree with the widely-known belief that by the time smokers reach old age, their habit has already hurt them, and those who continue to live healthily are probably immune (有免疫力的) to the dangers of cigarettes. 25.The conclusion of the new study is that _________. A. one can plan to give up smoking at any age for the sake (理由) of one's health B. it's late to stop smoking when one is getting old C. it's no use for young people stopping smoking D. smokers over the age of 70 are expected to live longer 26.A former smoker is a person who _________. A. smokes once in a while B. is going to give up smoking C. used to smoke D. smokes a lot 27.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage? A. Women who stop smoking face about the same cancer-death risk as non-smokers. B. Men who stop smoking are facing the same risk of death from cancer as non-smokers. C. Women who stop smoking face about the same cancer-death risk as men who gave up smoking 20 years ago. D. Men who stop smoking face about the same risk of death from heart trouble as non-smokers. C Parents play a very important role in children’s development, but that doesn’t mean that parents should spend all their money in educating their children. Or else, it would be unfair to them. However, some modern Chinese parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia without caring about the money. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will learn a musical instrument or ballet or other classes which will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So the parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter. However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents aren’t teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever. Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing housework. Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It’s an enjoyable but difficult experiment. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually to finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence. Some old machines , such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your children to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities aren’t merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important. 28.According to this passage, there are some problems with _________. A. the Chinese children’s skills B. the education system of China C. the Chinese parents’ idea of educating their children D. the Chinese children’s hobbies 29.The writer of this passage seems to agree that parents in China _______. A. are too strict with their children B. are too rich to educate their children C. are too poor to educate their children D. have some problems in educating their children correctly 30.We can conclude that cooking at home helps children_________. A. benefit from it and prepare themselves for the future B. learn how to become strong and fat C. learn how to serve their parents D. make their parents believe that they are clever 11.The last paragraph shows that_________. A. broken radios and television sets are useful B. an engineer must fix many broken radios C. one’s curiosity may be useful for his later life D. a good student should spend much time repairing radios D Farming is moving indoors, where the sun never shines, where rainfall is irrelevant and where the climate is always right. The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building with controlled light, temperature, wetness, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a New York highrise or a sprawling complex in the Saudi desert. It may be an answer to the world's food problems. The world already is having trouble feeding itself.Half the people on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of those- about 3 billion-are hungry or illfed.Foodprices, currently increasing, are buffeted by dryness, floods and the cost of energy required to plant, harvestand transport. And prices will only get more unstable.Climate change makes longterm crop planning uncertain.Farmers in many parts of the world already are using water available to the last drop. And the world is getting more crowded:by midcentury, the global population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9 billion. To feed so many people may require expanding farmland at the expense of forests and wilderness,or finding ways to completely increase crop output. Gertjan Meeuws has taken the concept of a greenhouse a step further, growing vegetables and house plants in enclosed (封闭的) and regulated environments. In their research station, water flows into the pans when needed, and the temperature is kept constant.Lights go on and off, creating similar day and night, but according to the rhythm of the plant. A building of 100 square meters and layers (层) of plants could provide a daily diet of 200 grams of fresh fruit and vegetables to the entire population of Den Bosch, about 140,000 people.Their idea isn't to grow foods that require much space, like corn or potatoes. Here sunlight is not only unnecessary but can be harmful.Plants need only specific wavelengths of light to grow.Their growth rate is three times faster than under greenhouse conditions. They use about 90 percent less water than outdoor agriculture. And city farming means producing food near the consumer, and there's no need to transport it long distances. 32.What can we mainly learn from Paragraph 2? A. The climate is worse and worse. B. The city people live a hard life. C. The world has difficulty feeding its people. D. The world's population is increasing fast. 33.Which of the following is true of the environments in the research station? A. The temperature is often changed. B. Sunshine is in great need for plants. C. Day and night depends on plants. D. Air quality is controlled by plants. 34.It can be inferred from the text that Gertjan Meeuws's farming________. A. helps save sea water a lot B. is highly adaptable C. resembles greenhouse agriculture D. suits the production of corn 35.What is the text mainly about? A. Development of indoor farming. B. Great Revolution in farming. C. Advantages of indoor farming. D. Sunless, rainless indoor farming. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Taking a math test can be pretty stressful. Even if you know the material, you can still get the problem wrong. Knowing how to go through your math test and check your work can save you from handing in a test full of mistakes that can be avoided. 36. Write it out You can also check a math problem by writing everything out on paper. 37. Writing out math problems reduces your chances of missing anything to the lowest possible level, which is a common cause of incorrect answers. 38. Make sure your answers work by doing the opposite procedure of what your problem calls for, including the answer you got the first time around. In other words, you would use the opposite of this addition problem—subtraction (减法)—to determine whether or not your answer is the correct one. Plugging in You may find that a variable(变量) isn’t good enough or have a problem where you have to solve for a variable. 39. This is the only real way to assure yourself that the answer you’ve found is correct. Check for a reasonable answer 40. For example, if you get an answer in the millions and you know it should be in the thousands, you’ve likely misplaced a point. Go back through the work on your paper to make sure all of your formulas and calculations are correct. If everything looks okay, do the problem again and compare the result of the second try to what you’ve got on the first try. A. Do the opposite B. Correct the answers C. Plug the variable in the equation (方程) to check it out. D. Therefore you’ll improve your grades, as well as your math skills. E. It also helps you to figure out everything after you have already finished the test. F. If the result of a problem seems to make no sense, it indicates that the answer is incorrect. G.
