One friend says, "The air is heavily polluted in the city, so I prefer to live outside, where the air is clean.” Another friend is unpleased with the traffic. Downtown is crowded with cars! You can’t find a parking place, and the traffic jams are terrible.” Everyone is worried about crime. “The city is full of criminals -- it's too dangerous.” For them, the rural(乡村的) life is a cure for all problems, green grass, flowers, swimming pools, barbecues, and so on. Yet after they have lived there for a year or so, they realize that rural life is not so pleasant as they were expecting. Why? Their gardens! They soon learn that the main part of rural life is yard work. After they work all weekend in their gardens, they are too tired to swim in their pools or cook some meat on their barbecues. And they can’t live in the countryside without a car. Most of them moved to the countryside to avoid traffic, but now they are blocked on a busy freeway two hours every day to drive to work downtown. My opinions about urban life are different-I love to live downtown! Why? First, in the city, I can enjoy nature. I can walk through the park. Smell the flowers, sit on the grass and visit the animals in the zoo. Yet I don 't have to do yard work or feed the animals. Also, I can get everywhere by bus; if there is a traffic jam, I can walk home. I think the criminal life will reflect changes in society too; if people are buying homes outside the city, the criminals will soon follow. Criminals want to avoid noise, smog, and pollution, too. Then, overcrowding and crime will be problems of the suburbs instead of the city! 5. The first paragraph is used to _______. A. list some figures B. make comparisons C. introduce the topic D. give suggestions 6. What did those moving outside think of their life in the city? A. Cosy. B. Convenient. C. Colorful. D. Crowded. 7. What is the major problem for those who live in the country? A. Being far from downtown. B. Having gardens to take care of. C. Failing to find parking lots. D. Suffering heavy traffic on the road. 【答案】5. C 6. D 7. Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius (天才)out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surrounding (环境). Thus the limits of person' s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supposed in a number of ways. It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligent. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely to be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth. Imagine now that we take two identical (完全相同的)twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the working is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence. 8. Which of these sentences best describes the writer's point in Paragraph 1? A. To some extent, intelligence is given at birth. B. Intelligence is developed by the environment. C. Some people are born clever and others born stupid. D. Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment. 9. It is suggested in this passage that_______. A. unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligence B. close relations usually have similar intelligence C. the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligence D. people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees of intelligence 10. Brothers and sisters are likely to_______. A. have similar intelligence B. have different intelligence C. go to the same university D. go to the same factory 11. The best title for this article would be_______. A. On Intelligence B. What Intelligence Means C. We Are Born with Intelligence D. Environment Plays a Part in Developing Intelligence 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. A 【解析】 这是一篇说明文。有些人天生聪明,有些人天生愚钝?还是人的智力是随着经验和环境得到了发展?这些问题的答案是肯定的。因此,在某种程度上人的智力是天生的,但是随着环境的变化,经验的增长,人的智力也随之增长。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。由第一段“Thus the limits of person' s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. ”可知,因此,人的智力的极限在出生时就已经确定了,他是否达能到这些极限将取决于他所处的环境。所以D选项“智力在出生时是固定的,但随着环境的变化而发展”最能描述作者在第一段中的观点。故D选项正确。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。由最后段“This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.”可知,这一结论也被一个事实所证实,生活中彼此密切接触的,但却完全没有血缘关系的人,他们的智力水平可能是相似的。所以这篇文章表明亲密关系的人通常有相似的智力。故B选项正确。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。由倒数第二段“ Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, ”可知,像兄弟姐妹、父母和孩子这样的关系,通常都有相似的智力。所以兄弟姐妹可能有相似的智力。故A选项正确。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,有些人天生聪明,有些人天生愚钝?还是人的智力是随着经验和环境得到了发展?这些问题的答案是肯定的。因此,在某种程度上人的智力是天生的,但是随着环境的变化,经验的增长,人的智力也随之增长。所以短文最佳的标题为“环境在智力发展中发挥着作用”。故A选项正确。 D Hybrid cars (混合动力车) are cars that run on petrol and electricity. They have a small standard petrol engine and a battery electric motor to provide electric power. There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required, for example, when going uphill or accelerating. In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed, for example when the car has stopped at traffic light, keeping only the electric engine running. Conventional(普通的) cars have large engines to deal with driving uphill and accelerating. Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines, improved by electric motors when needed, so they use less petrol. Another way that fuel consumption is cut by a system of “regenerative (再生的) braking”. The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than conventional brakes. The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In effect, the battery recharges when you brake. In conventional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted. In 1928 Ferdinand Porsche built an experimental hybrid car. The first mass-produced hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, came out in Japan at the end of 1997. However, hybrid cars became available in the USA only in 1999. As they use less fuel, hybrid cars are cheaper to run. There are also many voices in place to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don’t have to pay on certain roads. In some cities, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free. 12. Hybrid cars consume less energy than conventional cars because hybrid cars . A. have large engines to deal with accelerating B. have conventional brakes to slow down the car C. have electric power to assist when needed D. have no energy consumption when stopping 13. In regenerative braking,___. A. energy wasted in conventional cars is stored in the battery B. the conventional brakes are used to slow down the car C. the battery charges itself when the car is accelerating D. the petrol engine is usually turned off automatically 14. From the last paragraph we can learn that Hybrid cars . A. were first available in the USA B. will gain more popularity C. free their owners from tax D. are free to park anywhere in the city 15. The main purpose of this text is to . A. show how hybrid cars slow down B. encourage people to buy hybrid cars C. inform people of a kind of energy-saving cars D. explain why hybrid cars use less energy 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. C 【解析】 试题分析:本文介绍了一种新型的交通工具叫动力混合车,动力混合车使用汽油和电池相结合的方式运行,最大优势就是能够消耗较少的能源,同时为了推广这种车的使用,在有些国家还推出一系列的优惠政策。 【12题详解】 细节分析题。从第二段”but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required”中可以看出,动力混合车主要靠汽油保持运行,在需要额外的动力时使用电动机。所以这种车需要较少的能源是因为有电力的补充帮助,故选C。 【13题详解】 细节分析题。从第三段”The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than conventional brakes.” 考点:说明文类阅读 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) On a hot summer day, there are few things that are more wonderful than a nice cool pool. ___16___ And it is completely relaxing.
