Scope: Team Winter is an organization you founded to raise money for cancer research. How did it get started? Winter: At first, Team Winter was formed to fight childhood obesity (肥胖). When I was 8, I ran a race and raised $1,100 for that cause. But less than a year later, my dad got cancer. I knew I had to do something to help. When I started, my goal was to raise $10,000. I’ve raised well past that — almost $500,000. Scope: What goes through your mind when you run? Winter: When I’m having a hard time during a race, I think about my dad. If he could deal with the pain of cancer, I can deal with any type of pain. He was a very friendly person. He was always smiling and very happy even when he had cancer. Scope: Is your age ever an obstacle (障碍) in your races? Winter: I’ve been turned down by race directors who won’t let anyone younger than 16 or 18 compete. But Diana Nyad, the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, told me, “Never let them tell you it can’t be done.” From then on I knew my age wasn’t the problem. Scope: You’ve probably inspired lots of people too. Winter: I’ve heard about kids doing projects like me. Once in a restaurant, a boy came up to my mom and me and told us his dad had cancer too. Now he’s competing in running for his dad. Hearing stories like that helps keep me going. 21. What do we know about Team Winter? A. It always holds different races. B. Its final goal is to raise $500,000. C. It was named after Winter’s father. D. It was to help obese children at first. 22. When Winter has a hard time during a race, what keeps her going? A. Her father’s illness. B. Her father’s success. C. Her father’s bravery. D. Her father’s kindness. 23. Winter’s words in the last paragraph tell us that ________________. A. she sets a good example to others B. she hopes others will do what she does C. the boy wants to join Team Winter D. the boy invites her to compete with him B I love my blackberry—it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts .Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备) and truly communicate with others. On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule —no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy. Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students. The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course the material and the class discussion. I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom. I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up. 24. Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with________________. A. the course material B. others’ misuse of technology C. discussion topics D. the author’s class regulations 25. The underlined word “engage” in para.4 probably means _______________. A. explore B. accept C. change D. reject 26. According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may _______________. A. keep students from doing independent thinking B. encourage students to have in-depth conversations C. help students to better understand complex themes D. affect students’ concentration on course evaluation 27. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author _________________. A. is quite stubborn B. will give up teaching history C. will change his teaching plan soon D. values technology-free dialogues in his class C The Crown Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guest will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity – roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guest staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but generally I don’t think people will take advantage of our program.” Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition and 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website treehugger.com recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).” If successful, the electric bicycle meal program will be spread to all Crown Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement. 28. I tell them that I think the future of communications is moving online. People expect me to be fearful for the future of print. After all, in some people’s minds I wouldn’t be able to build a career in journalism if it all moves online. However, strangely enough, I’m actually comforted by the fact that online journalism is becoming usual. I am a blogger who has always been able to find a home for my writing online. Since I began writing blogs, I have become aware of how many people you can reach with online writing. Compare this to the newspapers circulation base, and you will have a strong reason for online journalism. In her successful blog post titled The job I have spent the last year learning is not the one I will have, author Jenny Surane states,“Print is an expensive product to love. And general managers, publishers and editors must now figure out a profitable way to get their news into readers’ heads.” She goes on to state that people don’t feel like picking up a newspaper now and would rather scroll(滚屏) through their Twitter feed, and get news from many different sources. If print is dying, then a new form of communicating information is being born. The need for information has not died. If anything, it has increased. What has died, rather, is the way in which information is presented. Now more than ever, in this age of information, there is a desire for stories on the same topic from different points of view. The printing industry can keep pace with the need of providing a variety of sources, if it chooses to. Is the future of print grim? Maybe. But is the future of journalism of communicating information to people grim as well? Definitely not. 32. According to Paragraph 2, the author feels ______. A. tired of being a newspaper journalist B. worried about the future of print C. confident about the future of his career D. embarrassed about online writing 33. What information is conveyed in Jenny’s blog post? A. Twitter is not very popular. B. Print still has its own advantages. C. It is hard to manage online journalism. D. People have more options to get information. 34. What does the underlined word “grim” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Depressing. B. Promising. C. Unforgiving. D. Encouraging. 35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To explore the future of journalism. B. To analyze the cause of print decrease. C. To explain the bright future of a journalist. D. To introduce a successful blog post about print. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Have a Successful Teenage Life Everyone wants to succeed in their life, don’t they?
