I was walking back home from the store and that same man was fifty feet in front of me, all the way! It turns out that he’s my neighbor, living in the apartment building just behind mine!As we walked up the stairs of our separate apartment buildings I shouted, “Thank you for the beer!” He replied, “No problem. Thanks for helping me push my car that time!” I didn’t remember him and told him it wasn’t me. He said “Oh! Ok. Well, still ... enjoy!” A few days later I saw him getting into his car and I realized who he was and that it actually had been me who helped him that day!I couldn’t tell him that he bought beer for the right guy! In order to make sure that they do their best, both students and teachers should stay informed of how these tests are changing. Clive Roberts, a director at ELS Educational Services, says the tests are changing greatly in response to the global growth in the use of English as a common language among people with different native languages. He says English “is one of the keys now to international student mobility. So, for that reason, a lot of new tests are being developed; old tests are being revamped to meet the needs of universities and employers worldwide.” Mr. Roberts says several parts of standardized tests have changed recently. Now, many tests are given on computers. And he says, tests measure all four skills of language learning: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Computer testing will reduce the length of time required for testing, because the tests adjust to the test-taker's ability. These computer-adaptive tests also increase accuracy in scoring. Computer-adaptive tests change depending on the test-taker's responses. They can become more or less difficult during the testing session. For this reason, the set of correct answers will be different for each test-taker. Another change to language testing relates to cultural sensitivity. Mr. Roberts says test development companies are now hiring people with intercultural communication backgrounds. The companies want to make sure the test does not upset test-takers. Having negative feelings may affect a student's performance on the test. The tests have also become more proficiency-oriented. The items are being designed in such a way that they test real-world proficiency and not simply sort of an artificial environment or a specific set of skills that are taught in a classroom. So a lot of authentic texts, and a lot of authentic listening passages are being used. In addition, changes to the tests will encourage schools to teach their students to use English for everyday life and study. 28. What does the writer intend to do in Paragraph 1? A.Introduce the topic of the text. B.Emphasize the importance of English test scores. C.Talk about the changed tests. D.Show his/her concern about language learning. 29. Which of the following may replace the underlined word “revamped” in Paragraph 2? A.increased B.simplified C.improved D.saved 30. Which of the following is NOT a change of the English test? A.Time-saving. B.Computer-assisted. C.Real-world proficiency. D.Inflexibility. 31. .People with intercultural communication backgrounds are employed ________. A.to take the test themselves first B.to evaluate the quality of the test C.to ensure the test won't be culturally offensive D.to tell the intercultural differences arising from the test D The National Health Service (NHS) is to pay for 10 people to be implanted(移植) with a “bionic eye”, a pioneering technology that can help those who have been blind for years to gain some sight. Only a handful of people have received surgery in trials so far to equip them to use Argus II, which employs a camera fixed in a pair of glasses and a tiny computer to send signals directly to the nerves controlling sight. Those who will get the equipment can currently see nothing more than the difference between daylight and darkness. The system allows the brain to decode(解读) flashes of light, so that they can learn to see movement. One of three patients to have had the implant into the retina(视网膜) in trails at Manchester Royal Eye hospital is Keith Hayman, 68, from Lancashire, who has five grandchildren. He was blind in his 20s. The disease causes cells in the retina gradually to stop working and die. Hayman was forced to give up his work. “Having spent half my life in darkness, I can now tell when my grandchildren run towards me and make out lights shining on Christmas trees,” he said. “I would be talking to a friend, who might have walked off and I couldn’t tell and kept talking to myself. This doesn’t happen anymore, because I can tell when they have gone.” They may seem like little things, he said, but “they make all the difference to me”. The NHS will fund(资助)the first 10 patients this year to have surgery at Manchester and at Moorfields Eye hospital in London. All will be carefully followed, to gather data on their progress and assess (评估) how much the bionic eye improves their daily lives. If the results are good, more patients are likely to receive the treatment in the future. The “bionic eye” treatment, including surgery, follow-up, equipment and recovery, costs £150,000. 28. What is Argus II mainly made up of? A. A camera, a pair of glasses and a bionic eye. B. The nerves, a pair of glasses and some signals. C. A new retina, a flash light and a tiny computer. D. A camera, a pair of glasses and a tiny computer. 29. What does the author want to show by using the example of Hayman? A. Hayman has become a normal person. B. The technology is of great importance. It’s not all it will ask, though. It makes them interested with a little guess work, and then gets them to read the book to see if their predictions are right. ____36______It’s about getting them involved in the reading experience. When your kids take the time to use the information they get from the cover and title, they’ve taken the first step to dive into the book. 37 First, encourage your child to choose a book and examine the cover. Ask your child to tell you his or her predictions on what the book is about, then have your child write down the predictions on a piece of paper. ____38__ Once the book is read, you and your child can look at the paper to check or correct the predictions. Then, have your child discuss the plot(情节) with you, and summarize(总结) what the book was really about. If your child is writing on his or her own, let him or her write a brief summary of the book. 39 At the same time, let him or her draw a picture on the back of the book. When your children take time to predict, discuss, summarize, and even draw pictures about what they’ve read, it builds their reading skills. 40 Share your experiences on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page! A. Your child’s next step is reading the book. B. It makes the reading a daily experience for your kids. C. Do your children really like the book that they read? D. If not, have your child dictate(口述) summary to you. E. Here’s how you can help your child complete this activity. F. Do you have any tips to help your children remember what they read? G.
