Her dad, Sgt. Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from Kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina. After serving in Kuwait for nine months, Melendez returned home a week earlier than his daughter expected. He held balloons and flowers in a classroom as he sat at a student’s desk to blend in with the crowd. “It came across my mind like, ‘How is she going to react?’”he recalled the heartwarming moment. “Is she going to be happy and run to me and hug me, or cry? That was all going on through my mind.” As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom, she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didn’t talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream. Melendez was a single parent so while he was deployed (调动), he got his sister to live with his daughter. When he was coming back and talking to his sister, both of them came to the conclusion that they should do something special for his daughter. Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned this whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect. The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that he’s home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices she’s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. I’ll do anything for my daughter. I believe I’m doing good parenting.” 24. How did Solymar feel at the sight of her father? A. She was eager to hug her father. B. She felt everything was as usual. C. She got excited at seeing her father. D. She was satisfied with what she saw. 25. What was Melendez’s attitude to the surprise? A. Content. B. Astonished. C. Touched. D. Upset. 26. Why did Melendez plan the surprise for Solymar? A. To get involved in her school life. B. To enourage her daughter to study harder. C. To build a strong emotional bond with her. D. To make up for what she lost in her growth. 27. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Father’s Selfless Love for His Daughter B. Girl Expecting the Returning of Her Dad C. Girl Surprised at School by Her Dad’s Return. D. Father and Daughter’s Expected Reunion C Have you ever been given something you don’t like or doesn’t fit, but you don’t want to hurt the feelings of the person who thinks about you? You’re not alone. Everyone has received an unwanted gift at least once in his or her life. That doesn’t mean the item is bad or useless. It simply means that it doesn’t work for you. If you find yourself with something nice but that doesn’t fit into your lifestyle, consider regifting it. Before you do that, make sure you understand the manners of this practice that is more and more common as people find it difficult to make ends meet to a great extent. There are specific things you should do to an item. Failure to do any of them may create an awkward situation. You never have to lie about what you are doing, but you don’t want to be in the position of having to explain anything. For example, remove the original wrapping paper and rewrap it in your own; make sure the box is in good condition so the item doesn’t appear used; check the item and make sure there are no cards or names on the packaging; inspect the item and make sure it is in excellent condition. When you get ready for regifting, consider having a white elephant gift exchange for your next celebration. This removes all the embarrassment of being caught regifting because that’s the whole purpose of the event. In order to prevent hurting feelings, provide everyone with a guest list and ask them not to bring anything given by the people on that list. 28. Why does the author begin the passage with a question? A. To share a hot phenomenon. B. To introduce the following part. C. To ask for readers’ answers. D. To point out a common opinion. 29. What most contributes to the growing regifting? A. People’s lack of money. B. People’s dislike of the gifts. C. People’s reduced desire for gifts. D. People’s understanding of its manners. 30. What’s mainly talked about in Paragraph 3? A. What to do before regifting. B. How to make use of unwanted gifts. C. What kind of gifts to be regifted. D. Why regifting can cause embarrassment. 31. What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean? A. Suitable but valueless. B. Expensive and useful. C. Packaged and invaluable. D. Nice but unsuitable. D When it's five o’clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers, is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they’re done. These days, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock-based work schedules hinder (阻碍) morale and creativity. Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 a. m. to 10 a. m., research from 10 a. m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning. What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities — from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga — by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under “clock time” vs “task time”. They found clock timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up. The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be under-valued and under-supported in business culture. Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies. This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It’ll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier. 32. What is the way people often do their work according to the author? A. They finish the most urgent task first. B. They set a time limit for each specific task. C. They combine clock-based and task-based planning. D. They accomplish their tasks one by one. 33. What did the researchers find in their experiments about clock-timers? A. They tend to be more productive. B. They seize opportunities as they come up. C. They tend to enjoy doing the work, D. They have more control over their lives. 34. What is the researchers’ opinion about today’s business culture? A. It tends to value and support the task-based organizing. B. It attaches more importance to work efficiency than to workers' lives. C. It aims to bring employees’ potential and creativity into full play. D. It does not lay enough emphasis on task-based practice. 35. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A. it is important to keep a balance between work and life. B. task-based timing is preferred for doing creative work. C. performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier. D. a scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s nice being nice to others; it’s also great to give people a hand. However, if you start to hurt yourself by doing so, then this is not so healthy. 36 If you fear that you might fall into this category, the following tips will help you to stand up for yourself and regain your self-confidence. 37 Although you may often stay silent if something is wrong or bothers you, it is better to speak your mind right away. You don’t have to be rude, but you do have to be firm and direct. Don’t do things for others if you don’t really want to. Speak up, and soon others will be seeing you in a whole new light. Start small. 38 This will allow you to practice being brave and self-confident. Tell a person who has cut in line in front of you to move to the back of the line, or tell a salesperson to do that. Before long, you will be confident enough to stand up to your friends and family member. Judge well. When dealing with others, you have to exercise good judgment. 39 If a colleague isn’t doing his part, you should rightfully demand that he start doing so. However, if a taxi cuts you off in traffic, just let it go. 40 Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you want to get back again after having been a pushover (好说话的人), it’s best to take one step at a time. A. Express yourself. B. Regain your confidence. C. Start by speaking up for yourself with strangers. D. Everyone has the right to live without being judged. E. If you slip back into the pushover mode every once in a while, don’t blame yourself. F. Sadly, some people are so easily pushed around that they come to be seen as pushovers. G. It’s one thing to be confident, but quite another to forcefully say no to an unreasonable request. It was a cold winter day when I received a phone call.
