Like pairs of dogs you can find in any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their houses. ‎ One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didn’t show up the next day, and, although they made their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing. Curiously, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone, barking and jumping. Busy with their own lives, they paid no attention to the nervous little neighbor dog.‎ Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take “no” for an answer. Ted, Brownie’s owner, was continuously disturbed by the angry, determined little dog. Spotty followed Ted about, barking all the time, then rushing toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me! It’s urgent!”‎ Eventually, Ted followed Spotty across the empty lot as Spotty stopped to race back and barked encouragingly. The little dog led the man to a deserted spot a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his legs crushed in a steel trap ( 圈套 ). Frightened, Ted now wished he had taken Spotty’s earlier appeals seriously.‎ Then Ted noticed something. Spotty had done something else besides leading Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog, Ted found some food remains of every meal. Brownie had been fed that week! Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in the hope of keeping his friend alive. Spotty had actually stayed with Brownie to protect him from hunger and other dangers, and keep his spirits up.‎ Brownie’s leg was carefully treated by a veterinarian (兽医)and he soon recovered. For many years thereafter the two families watched the faithful friends chasing each other down that well-worn path between their houses.‎ 21. What can we learn from the story?‎ A.     Barking dogs seldom bite. B.     A friend in need is a friend indeed. C.     Love me, love my dog. D.     Every dog has its day.‎ B Happiness is in your genes, it seems, according to a research that shows the more people in a country who have a particular gene, the happier the nation will be. The FAAH gene, the DNA in question, makes a protein that affects feelings of pleasure and pain. People with a particular version of it tend to be cheerier souls. ‎ ‎     The researchers believe that the finding can help explain why some of the worldˈs poorest nations are also the happiest. The team from Bulgaria looked at whether there was a connection between the level of the FAAH gene in a population and the number of people who said they were very happy in the global study of life satisfaction. Sweden, one of the happiest countries in Europe and in the world, has lots of happy DNA. Some 26. 3 percent of Swedes have the happiness gene, compared to 23 percent of the British, 21 percent of the French and 20 percent of Germans. The happiness gene is even rarer in southern Europe, where it is found in 18 percent of Greeks and just 12 percent of Italians. In contrast, the people in Iraq and Jordan are among the least likely to rate themselves as very happy and also have the lowest levels of the gene.‎ ‎     But the gene and optimism don’t always go hand in hand. For instance, Russians score very low on happiness, despite having the right DNA, the Journal of Happiness Studies reports. Climatic differences are also found to be closely associated with national differences in happiness. Study co-author Michael Minkov said, "We can notice the high occurrence of the gene in equatorial(‎ 赤道的) and tropical environments in South America and Africa, and the lower occurrence of it around the Mediterranean Sea than in Northern Europe. "‎ ‎     Genetics is not the only determining factor (因素) of happiness," A spokesman for the journalˈs publisher said, "The economic and political difficulties continuously experienced by Eastern European nations contribute to the very low happiness scores of Russians. Nations not blessed with the right DNA aren’t necessarily miserable, happiness can still rise and fall for other reasons. "‎ 21. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph l refers to _______.‎ A. happiness B. life satisfaction C. the protein in question D. the FAAH gene 22. Which country has the highest percentage of the happiness genes?‎ A. Greece. B. Germany. C. Britain. D. Iraq.‎ 23. What can we infer from the text?‎ A. Climate has much to do with happiness. B. The poorest countries are actually the happiest. C. Genetics matters most to determine happiness. D. Russians are not happy since they lack happy DNA.‎ 24. The best title for the text is______.‎ A. An APEC forum is being held in Beijing, to find ways to better address the problem. ‎ ‎156 participants from 19 APEC economies and 4 non-APEC members attended the APEC Food Safety Cooperation Forum. Created 7 years ago, the forum has been actively looking for ways to strengthen food safety standard in the region, without affecting trade.‎ ‎“As consumers are faced with more varieties of food, the potential food safety risk also becomes bigger. This forum has helped APEC economies to cooperate in supervision, exchange information, and improve the overall food safety standard in the Asia-Pacific region,” said director of Chinaˈs General Administration of Quality Supervision Wu Qinghai.‎ ‎ For the first time the forum has brought together high-level regulators, academics, and industry stakeholders to talk about their respective roles in safety supervision. They say governments alone cannot shoulder this heavy duty.‎ In China, the continuous food safety problems have greatly hurt consumersˈ confidence in domestic products; therefore more turned to imports. In July this year, more than 400 batches(批) of food imports from 35 countries and regions were found substandard by the countryˈs top quality supervisor.‎ Governments and industries have been brought closer by this forum.
