You Are When You Eat The secret to better health could be as simple as an early dinnertime. Jackie Rodriguez gained 70 pounds after her first child was born. “I stayed like that for two years,” she says. Then, when her daughter was two, she (13) ______ (drop) all the weight with practically no effort. “I wasn’t using any diet pills, fat burners, or aerobic exercise … (14) ______,” she recalls. The change had nothing to do with (15) ______ Rodriguez ate. Rather, it began when she started a new job that shook up her daily routine. Working in the office of a DJ company near her apartment, she started her shift at 5:30 p.m. Instead of sharing dinner with her husband at nine, (16) ______ he got home from his job, she ate alone at five, before she left her child with a baby sitter and went to work. (17) ______ nine months, she slimmed from a size 16 to a size 2. She felt like a movie star (18) ______ seems to lose baby weight effortlessly. “You don’t think that could happen to you,” she says. Night work often leads to weight gain, so Rodriguez’s story might seem to be an exception. But unlike many such workers, who labor in the very short hours or work rotating shifts (轮班), Rodriguez clocked out by 11 p.m. and got (19) ______ regular night’s sleep. Perhaps even (20) ______ (important), she didn’t eat at work or when she got home — just showered and went to bed. Her main adjustment was moving dinnertime almost four hours earlier. That single, simple change seems to have caused Rodriguez’s dramatic weight loss — and new scientific evidence is used to explain why. Researchers are developing a completely new understanding of (21) ______ it works. It seems that our bodies are ready to process food most efficiently when it (22) ______ (eat) during daylight hours. “We now recognize that our biology responds differently to calories consumed at different times of day,” says Harvard scientist Frank Scheer. That means a habit as harmless as eating at night, compared with eating meals with the same amount of calories during the day, (23) ______ cause people to gain weight. “That late-night bowl of ice cream may all go toward your waistline,” says Christopher Colwell, author of Circadian Medicine. Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. (B) Two weeks ago, Ray Johnstone, an elderly man living alone in South Australia, posted a classified advertisement in search of a friend. Specifically, he was on the hunt for a fishing partner, as he no longer had anyone to share his hobby with. “I’m a widowed retired man who is looking for a fishing mate,” he wrote on Gumtree, “My previous fishing mate is now deceased. He will never accompany me to go fishing. I am a land-based fisherman. I have all the gear for all types of fish that is required for land-based fishing.” Like all of us, 22-year-old Mati Batsinilas was touched by the man’s advertisement, so he reached out to him and arranged an outing. Rather than simply spend the day with Johnstone somewhere local, however, he and his family offered to take him on an all-inclusive weekend fishing trip of Stradbroke Island in Queensland. And, as expected, they had a good time. “Whilst on the island we covered four-wheel driving, site-seeing, fishing and swimming, chats with the locals and the best of all ... just relaxing and chatting like mates,” Batsinilas wrote in a Facebook post. “Once you reach a level of maturity in life, age should only be a number. My respect for Johostone is obviously very high, but I treated him exactly the way I would have treated one of my 22-year-old mates.” Fortunately, it sounds like Johnstone won’t have to place more classified advertisements any time soon. In addition to finding a friend, the retiree has become a star on the Internet, with many social media users voicing their interests in meeting the now-famous fisherman. 48. What was the aim of Ray Johnstone’s posting a classified advertisement? A. To sell all his tools. B. To find a friend to go fishing with. C. To show off his excellent fishing skills. D. To find a friend to sell all his caught fish. 49. The word “deceased” in the first paragraph means “_______”. A. ill B. unfriendly C. angry D. dead 50. What was Mati Batsinilas’ attitude towards Ray Johnstone? A. He treated the old man as a friend of the same age. B. He thought Johnstone was too old to go fishing with. C. He thought his father would make friends with Johnstone. D. He treated Johnstone like a senior citizen and took him to travel. 51. What happened after Ray Johnstone posted the classified advertisement? A. More people went online to read his latest information. B. More people came to make friends with Ray Johnstone. C. There were no advertisements for friends-hunting on the Internet. D. Ray Johnstone regretted what he did on the Internet and moved away. (C) Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of. A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don’t keep your legs crossed. Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle — what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run. 52. What can we learn about crossing one’s legs? A. It is a very bad social habit. B. It can do harm to people’s health. C. It is usually practiced deliberately. D. It can make others feel uncomfortable. 53. According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can _______. A. resist gravity effectively B. affect your blood pressure C. lead to heart attacks easily D. improve the function of legs 54. In the third paragraph “pins and needles” probably means _______. A. serious muscle injuries B. being highly flexible C. being a little nervous D. slight sharp pains 55. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To evaluate effects of an experiment. B. To introduce research methods. C. To give readers some advice. D. To compare common habits. IV. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers in your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Questions 6 through 8 are based on the following passage. This is the Lakewood Public Address System. This is not a test like the one we had last week. I repeat, this is not a test. The Western Hill Fire is spreading toward Lakewood much quicker than we had expected. Currently, we expect the fire to come within twenty miles of Lakewood by six o’clock this evening. We are therefore requiring all residents to leave this area immediately. Springfield to the north, Point Cabina Station to the east, and Galveston to the south are all in the safe zone. It will take less than thirty minutes to drive to any of these towns. Take as many things as you can fit in your car, but do not delay. We have orders from the state police to make sure that the entire town of Lakewood is empty by five o’clock today. You have plenty of time to get all your family members, pets, and belongings together, so there is no need to panic. Stay calm, but get started as soon as possible. Now, listen again please. Questions: 6. When will the fire arrive close to Lakewood? (B) 7. How long will it take residents to reach the safe zone? (C) 8. What are residents advised to do before they leave? (C) Questions 9 through 12 are based on the following conversation. M: You see the list of books for this course? W: Yes, Dr. Downs said he expects us to have the first five on the list. He is going to discuss them in detail. M: Are you going to buy them? W: I don’t know. These books are expensive. And I don’t have a lot of money on me. M: How about sharing them with me? W: Sounds good. M: Let’s do this. I will buy three and you buy two of them. W: I would rather do it this way: we pay fifty-fifty for the books now. And at the end of the course you can take the books you find more interesting and I will take the ones I like. M: What if we both like the same books? W: Come on, we are not going to argue over that, are we? M: I was just joking. It’s definitely a better idea. W: Then let’s get the books as soon as possible. Now, listen again please. Questions: 9. How many books do the two speakers wanted to buy? (D) 10. What are the speakers mainly talking about? (B) 11. Why does Dr. Downs want his students to have these books? (C) 12.
