To my amazement I discovered that not only had I been paid, a company I’d never worked for had also paid me! I knew I’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account, so I tried to get the money back to the right person. Easier said than done. The bank couldn’t help as it wasn’t a bank problem. The human resources department at the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough details. I rang the bank again. Thankfully I had a sympathetic call operator who gave me a name, so I again rang the company “Daniel” worked for. I expected the bank would contact me to arrange to take the money from my account and repay Daniel. I heard nothing for a month and the money remained in my account when Daniel called, explaining he’d tried to get back his money but had been unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error. He had rung to ask if I could speak to the bank, but after chatting for a few minutes we realized we could probably fix this problem ourselves. We decided I would take the money from my account and he would pick it up from me. Due to my busy job I was unable to meet Daniel personally but he left me a lovely bottle of wine in exchange for what was rightfully his. I never had any intention of keeping Daniel’s pay but red tape(烦琐手续) made it difficult to do the right thing. It all came down to two people being able to do what a huge bank and a large company couldn’t do—admit a mistake has occurred and fix it. 28. What was the attitude of the author towards the extra money in his bank account? A. He didn’t know what to do with it. B. He felt lucky to get it. C. He thought of keeping it for himself. D. How was the problem solved in the end? A. The author and Daniel solved the problem themselves. B. It cost Daniel a lovely bottle of wine to get back his money. C. The author gave the money back to the company. D. The call operator offered to solve their problem. 31. From the passage we can infer that . A. the bank could solve the problem soon and easily with the red tape. B. some large organizations usually have troublesome official rules. C. Daniel didn’t know the error before he contacted the author. D. the company gave the wrong account to the bank. D Phillida Eves and her husband Tedd Hamilton weren’t unhappy living in the Galway countryside with their sons, Clan and Oisin, and their daughter, Soracha. “We had a lovely home, a car, lots of friends, and weekends sailing our boat.” Says Phillida. “But there’s a line from a poem that goes: ‘Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?’ That says it all for me. We felt that there was more to life.” So they quit their jobs, took their sons, then aged six and nine, out of school and went to southern Spain where they bought a 15-metre yacht(游艇) and headed up the coast to Barcelona. Soracha was not even three. And they brought along Poppy, the family dog. Now, two and a half years and 10,000 km later, they don’t intend to stop. Tedd is a yacht engineer and can find work in ports. But, says Phillida, a supply teacher(代课老师), “Any family could do this.” The children are home-schooled using a correspondence course(函授课程). My son had a recent project on the weather. The weather is vital to us. My son knows more than most adults about weather systems, compasses, maps and directions. The weather, for him, means life or death. Other subjects have become equally vivid. “They’re living geography and history all the time. We’ve sailed round Italy, Sardinia, Sicily, and seen tiny islands we didn’t know. The kids learned about ancient Romans by visiting Rome. One summer off the Italian coast we sailed past a volcano at 2 a.m. We woke the kids. There it was, under the moon, with fire coming out of the top—you don’t get that in a textbook.” But what about social development? Again, Phillida is sanguine. “The children have become much more socially confident since we set out. They play with tones of families of all nationalities on other boats we meet.” Living for the moment, they believe, is a huge life lesson. “Our children never say they’re bored.” The other day they stopped mid-ocean and the kids swam, 110 km from land. “That’s the kind of freedom we want for them,” says Phillida. “That’s the kind of freedom they’ve got.” 32. We are not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to turn the path of anxiety, anger, and sadness into a state of happiness. Here are four ideas to get you started. 36 . ● Laugh out loud Just expecting a happy, funny event can raise levels of pleasure-causing hormones(荷尔蒙) and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California tested 16 men, who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. 37 When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped greatly, while their levels of pleasure-causing hormones rose 27 percent. ● Do one thing at a time Eduward Suarez, professor of medical psychology at Duck, found that people who do several things at the same time are more likely to have high blood pressure. 38 Instead of talking on the phone while cleaning the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation. ● 39 Although relationships help take away stress, sometimes you need time to recharge and reflect on your own. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading at home, or looking through books in a bookstore. ● Practice mindfulness 40 Instead of worrying about your check-up tomorrow while having dinner with your family, focus on the here and now—food, the company, and the conversation. This can happen at a bus stop, in a restaurant or at a supermarket. Why is that? We’ve probably got two reasons. The first reason is supposed to be that people are trying to make good use of time. And the second one may be that people show little interest in what’s happening around them. However, focusing only on what’s on our mobile phones may not only do harm to our eyesight, but also prevent us from communicating normally. Therefore, some other ways to kill time are strongly suggested. For me, chatting with others is a good replacement of playing always with mobile phones.查看更多
