Given the freezing cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.‎ Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny’s hunch (直觉). Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge. However, having a successful career does not require you to sit behind a desk and plug away at a computer all day.‎ In fact, there are a large number of non-desk jobs in a variety of industries that are growing and offering workers a direct path to the middle class, according to a new analysis of labor market information from CareerBuilder. While most of the highest-paying non-desk jobs are medical professions that require a doctoral or professional degree, there are 170 non-desk professions that pay $15 per hour or more, do not require a bachelor’s degree(学士学位) for a typical entry-level position, and have seen at least 6 percent job growth over the last four years.‎ ‎“The US workforce has gradually changed to office-based work because of the rise of the professional service economy and productivity gains associated with information technology,” Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources Officer at CareerBuilder, said in a statement. “But some of the healthiest areas of job growth year after year are in middle-skill professions that don’t require workers to sit in front of computer monitors and phones for 40 hours a week.”‎ Here are the top-paying jobs that don’t require you to work at a desk in various kinds — none of which require a four-year college degree — and their hourly salary(工资) and growth rate since 2010: professional assistants(助理) : $26.57, 14 percent; elevator repairers: $37.81, 6 percent; mechanical engineering technicians: $25.19, 10 percent; and electromechanical(电动机械的) technicians: $24.68, 8 percent.‎ While they tend to pay less than traditional office jobs, non-desk professions provide a variety of benefits. Haefner points to a 2014 CareerBuilder survey that discovered workers who don’t work at a desk all day are less likely to complain about their work environment and less likely to report being overweight.‎ ‎28. What does the underlined phrase “plug away” in the first paragraph probably mean?‎ A. Turn off a switch.              B. Look for a job.‎ C. Keep on working.              D. Give up working.‎ ‎29. What conclusion can we draw from the second paragraph?‎ A. A non-desk job may provide you with a middle-class life.‎ B. The last four years has seen an increase in desk jobs.‎ C. The college degree is the ticket to a position.‎ D. A non-desk job cannot offer you a secure life.‎ ‎30. What is the key reason for the US workforce to change to office-based work?‎ A. High salary.               B. Medicine.‎ C. Information technology.              D. Service industries.‎ ‎31. Which job has grown the fastest since 2010?‎ A. Elevator repairers.               B. Professional assistants.‎ C. Electromechanical technicians.              D. Mechanical engineering technicians.‎ D Humans' invention of zero was vital for modern mathematics and science, but we're not the only species to consider "nothing" a number. Parrots and monkeys understand the concept of zero, and now bees have joined the club, too.‎ Honey bees are known to have some numerical skills such as the ability to count to four, which may come in handy when keeping track of landmarks in their environment. To see whether these abilities extended to understanding zero, researchers trained 10 bees to identify the smaller of two numbers. Across a series of trials, they showed the insects two different pictures displaying a few black shapes on a white background. If the bees flew to the picture with the smaller number of shapes, they were given delicious sugar water, but if they flew toward the larger number, they were punished with bitter-tasting food.‎ Once the bees had learned to consistently make the correct choice, the researchers gave them a new choice: a white background containing no shapes at all. Even though the bees had never seen an empty picture before, 64% of the time they chose it rather than a picture containing two or three shapes, the authors report today in Science. This suggests that the insects understood that "zero" is less than two or three. And they weren't just going for the empty picture because it was new and interesting. Another group of bees trained to always choose the larger number tended to pick the nonzero image in this test.‎ In further experiments, the researchers showed that bees' understanding of zero was even more complex: for example, they were able to distinguish between one and zero-a challenge even for some other members of the zero club. Advanced numerical abilities like this could give animals an evolutionary advantage, helping them keep track of predators (捕食者)and food sources. And if an insect can display such a thorough grasp of the number zero, write the researchers, then this ability may be more common in the animal kingdom than we think.‎ ‎32.According to the trials, the researchers have found that bees ______.‎ A. have the same intelligence as parrots and monkeys B. can count many numbers after being trained C. can identify the smaller number quickly D. understand the concept of zero ‎33.The researchers trained another group of bees to ______.‎ A. confirm the bees are able to identify the smaller number B. find the big difference between the two groups of bees C. prove the bees are interested in new things D. show the bees can be distinguished easily ‎34.What do the researchers suggest in further experiments? ‎ A. Bees should be trained more. B. Numerical abilities could help predators find bees. C. Insects are better at understanding zero than animals. D. Animals may display a thorough grasp of the number zero.‎ ‎35.What is the best the title for the text?‎ A. New Findings About Bees' Concept of Zero B. Experients on Bees' Numerical Skills C.
