Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.‎ Still, the firefighter's first words “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River” made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief “Your son is OK.”‎ When I got to the river, I immediately saw fire truck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.‎ I hurried over to him. “You OK?”I asked.‎ ‎“Yeah,” was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation, I didn't get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his chest.‎ The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.‎ In an age in which the word “ hero” is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centered, but that didn't mean they have no desire to do good. Still shocked by my son's daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him-but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What's for supper?”‎ I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I had expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. Watching from the window, I was reminded that still water often runs deep.‎ ‎21. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?‎ ‎ A. He was an excellent swimmer. B. The water of the river is shallow.‎ ‎ C. He was old enough to swim. D. The rocks can be of help if there's danger.‎ ‎22. The underlined part “who tends to play his cards close to his chest” probably means_______.‎ ‎ A. Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids ‎ B. Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks.‎ ‎ C. Anton always has a desire to help others.‎ ‎ D. Anton seldom changes his mind.‎ ‎23. What might be the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. My Son, My Hero B. Anton, A Silent Boy C. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks. ‎ ‎“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components(元件)”, said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few yeas ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.‎ They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.‎ While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.‎ Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis.”‎ ‎28. The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was that_______.‎ A. they had no model in their mind B. they did not have sufficient time C. they had no ready-made components D. they could not put the components together.‎ ‎29. It can be inferred from Paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly _________.‎ A. consists of a flight device and a control system B. can just fly in limited areas at the present time C. can collect information from many sources D. has been put into wide application ‎30. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?‎ A. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.‎ B. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.‎ C. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.‎ D. Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.‎ ‎31. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?‎ A. Father of Robotic Fly B. Inspiration from Engineering Science C. Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect D. Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study D CANYOUIMAGINEHOWHARDITWOULDBETOREADSENTENCESLIKETHIS? Every one of us gets so used to punctuation marks(标点符号) that not many of us give them a second thought. Actually, the ancient Greeks wrote this way. The lack of punctuation marks probably didn’t bother good readers, though. As they read, they just put pauses where they fit best. Also at this time, sentences switched directions. A sentence read from left to right. The next one read right to left, and then left to right again, etc. The ancient Romans sometimes punctuated like this: They put something that can separate words in a sentence. The word punctuation actually comes from this idea and the Latin word “punctum”, which means a dot.‎ ‎ When the 5th century arrived, there were just two punctuation marks: spaces and points. The spaces separated words while the points showed pauses in reading. Then in the 13th century, a printer named Aldus Manutius tried to standardize punctuation. He always used a period for a complete stop at the end of a sentence. He used a slash(/) to indicate a short pause. Over time, that slash was shortened and curled, and it became the modern comma(逗号).‎ ‎ Since that time, other marks have enlarged the punctuation family. The exclamation mark (感叹号)comes from the Latin word “io”. It means “exclamation of joy”. The question mark originally started out as the Latin word “questio”, meaning “question”. Eventually, scholars put it at the end of a sentence to show a question. ‎ Punctuation even keeps changing nowadays. New marks are coming into existence, and old punctuation marks are used in new ways. Take for example the “interrobang”. This 1962 invention combines the question mark and exclamation mark for times when writers want both. For example, “She did what?!” or “How much did you pay for that dress?!” Obviously, the interrobang is not widely used or recognized yet, but its invention shows that English is not yet finished with its punctuation.‎ ‎32. From the first paragraph, we can know that ____________.‎ A. good readers had trouble reading without punctuation marks B. a sentence always read from left to right in ancient Greece C. ancient Greeks switched the direction of punctuation marks D. the use of punctuation marks can date back to ancient times ‎33. The passage is developed _______________.‎ A. by time B. by space C. by comparison D. by importance ‎34. We can learn from the passage that _________.‎ A. ancient Romans didn’t use any punctuation marks B. exclamation and questions marks came from Latin C. spaces and slashes were already used before the 5th century D. Aldus Manutius first started to use commas ‎35. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?‎ A. The combination of two marks will not work.‎ B. It takes time for people to accept new punctuation marks.‎ C. Old punctuation marks need to be standardized.‎ D. Punctuation marks are still changing today.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. 36 So challenge the following limits:‎ Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously.‎ If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. 37 But don’t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes and say, “Go on, I’m not scared!”‎ ‎38 ‎ Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.‎ Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.‎ ‎ 39 A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.‎ Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.‎ Don’t just limit yourself to your fellow travelers---try to connect with the service staff. You ‎ never know what kind of people they’re going to be.
