To many of his friends, it meant the ending of a brilliant career, but the man was simply trying to achieve a different sort of greatness with his pizza shop. The shop operates by a "pay it forward" system—customers who walk in to buy pizza can also donate a slice for a homeless person. In this way, about 30 to 40 homeless people are able to eat for free at Rosa’s every single day. In the past one year, the shop has served 8,500 free slices of pizza to homeless people. Even before the pay-it-forward system, Rosa’s Fresh Pizza always gave away free slices to hungry homeless people in the neighbourhood. But one day last March, a customer asked if he could “pay it forward” and buy a slice for the next homeless person who walked in. Wartman immediately agreed, and then put up a sticky(粘的)note on the wall. Anyone who was hungry or broke could use the sticky note for a free slice. Word quickly spread and before long, more and more customers came in with similar offers. Before long, the walls were covered with over 500 sticky notes. Ever since that first customer paid it forward, over 8,500 slices have been given away to feed those in need. Wartman said that there was a similar practice in Italy, called “suspended coffee”, where customers could buy an extra cup of coffee for someone who couldn’t afford it. The homeless pizza recipients(接受者)can even leave their own messages on the wall expressing gratitude or motivation. One of the notes from a homeless customer at the restaurant read: “I just want to thank everyone that donated to Rosa’s; it gave me a place to eat every day and the opportunity to get back on my feet. I shall start a new job tomorrow!” 1. Which of the following is TRUE about Wartman? A. He used to be homeless himself. B. He was tired of his job on Wall Street. C. For example, we yell at the TV screen even though the footballer can’t hear us; we get frightened on high glass walkways even though we know we’re not in danger. These reactions are all examples of a little-known principle called alief: a reaction that contradicts a belief. Most of the time, alief is harmless or even pleasurable. As psychologist Paul Bloom writes, “The point of alief refers to the fact that our minds partially ignore the difference between events that we believe to be real and those that seem to be real, or that are imagined to be real. That is connected with the pleasures of the imagination.” Sometimes, however, the automatic reaction of alief works against us. Take racial prejudice for example. A well-known anti-racist may behave in racist ways without realizing them. In the paper that first introduced the idea of alief, Tamar Azabo Gendler explained how racism spreads in society, often without our conscious knowledge: white people presented with images of black faces tend to be considered as a gang; people offering resumes(简历) with typical black names are less likely to get interviews than those bearing white names. However, one study found that people asked to press a “NO” button every time they saw a stereotypical(刻板印象的)image and “YES” when they saw an image that broke the stereotype became much faster at rejecting stereotypes. Another study found that people who were asked to picture a non-stereotypical person in their mind later tended to produce weaker automatic stereotypes. That means seeking examples of people who don’t fit common stereotypes at the individual level, and media and companies that put people in non-stereotypical roles at the societal level may have a positive influence on the fight against the dark side of alief. 2. What does the author think of the phenomenon of alief? A. Absurd. B. Universal. C. Embarrassing. D. Encouraging. 3. What can we learn about alief? A. It is usually a harmful belief. B. It reflects a lack of imagination. C. It protects people from realities. D. It can influence people’s judgment. 1. Which of the following might Tamar Szabo Gendler agree with? A. Black people are violent and uneducated. B. White people are often unconscious racists. C. It’s harder for black people to get employed. D. White people always give good impressions. 2. The main purpose of the last paragraph is to show ________. A. how to fight against alief B. the consequences of stereotypes C. some successful studies about alief D. how to avoid stereotypes caused by alief D Mike Flint was Buffett’s airplane pilot. Flint had also flown four US presidents, so we can safely say he was good at his job. Flint talked about his career priorities(优先事项)with Buffett. Buffett asked him to go through a 3-step exercise. STEP 1: Write down his top 25 career goals. So, Flint took some time and wrote them down. STEP 2: Review his list and circle his top 5 goals. Again, Flint took some time, made his way through the list, and at last decided on his 5 most important goals. STEP 3: At this point, Flint had two lists. The 5 items he had circled were on List A and the 20 items he had not circled were on List B. Flint said that he would start working on his top 5 goals right away. And then Buffett asked him about the second list, “And what about the ones you didn't circle?” Flint replied, “Well, the top 5 are my primary focus, but the other 20 come in a close second. I still plan to give them my efforts.” Buffett said, “No. You’ve got it wrong. Everything you didn’t circle just became your Avoid-At-All-Cost list. These things get no efforts from you until you’ve succeeded with your top 5.” This is why Buffett’s strategy is great. Items 6 through 25 are the things you care about. So you can’t help paying attention to them. And then you get 20 distractions(分心的事物) to stop you from focusing on your top 5 goals. Spending time on secondary priorities is the reason you have 20 half-finished goals instead of 5 completed ones. So force yourself to focus. The most dangerous distractions are the ones you love, but that don’t love you back. 1. What did Flint think of his items on List B? A. They were important too. B. They were not worth his effort. C. They were much more difficult. D. They were impossible goals to reach. 2. What did Buffett suggest to Mike Flint? A. Giving up List B halfway. B. Choosing only one priority from the 25 items. C. Paying no attention to List B before finishing List A. D. Reviewing all the items and deciding on another top 5. 3. What can we learn from Buffett’s strategy? A. Getting 20 half-finished goals is equally effective. B. It’s impossible for us to finish two tasks at a time. C. We should break away from distractions decidedly. D. Secondary priorities will prevent us from succeeding. 4. What can be the best title for the text? A. List A or List B? B. How to choose your priorities C. The secret of Buffett’s great success D. Avoid distractions to focus on your priorities 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多途选项。 (注:选E 涂AB ; 选F涂AC; 选G涂AD) Technology allows teens to communicate with friends in new ways. During the training, we learned how to make up, how to greet people properly and so on. Then during the summit, I was responsible for welcoming the foreign guests.
