B Years ago when Sam Haskell was nine, a television commercial attracted his attention. P&G (宝洁公司)had launched an ad campaign with the “Cheer Man”, a character who visited neighborhoods around the country. If he rang your doorbell and you had a box of Cheer (a brand name of P&G’s detergent) or even something like “Cheer” written on a piece of paper, you’d receive ten dollars. Sam was convinced the Cheer Man would come to his home in Mississippi. He made a three-foot by four-foot sign with the Cheer logo and hung it in his bedroom. He was ready, and he told his classmates and everyone he talked to that the Cheer Man was coming to his house. People laughed at him, but his mom kept encouraging him to dream. Time went by and the advertisement was no longer on TV. Sam stored the sign in his closet — but he still believed the Cheer Man was coming. The next summer, when Sam was ten, he went to a neighborhood birthday party. Playing soccer on the lawn, they heard what sounded like someone shouting through a megaphone. As the noise got closer, they saw it was a car with a loudspeaker on the roof — a man was yelling, “Cheer! Cheer! Cheer…is here!” Sam watched in awe. The car was still several blocks away, but he knew in his heart that it was going to his house. Sam ran home, grabbed his sign and rushed back outside holding it over his head. His heart pounded in excitement. And then, just as he’d dreamed, the Cheer Man stopped in front of his house, walked up to Sam and said “You get the ten dollars.” Young Sam learned a valuable lesson that day about believing in a dream. He discovered that everything is possible. The knowledge paved the way for Sam’s future as a television executive and producer in Hollywood. In 2007, TV Guide named him one of the 25 Most Innovation and Influential People in Television over the last quarter-century. 24. How did Sam get the ad? A. By reading newspapers. B. By watching TV. C. By visiting neighborhoods. D. By making the Cheer logo. 25. What were other people’s reactions to Sam’s belief? A. They thought Sam was ridiculous. B. They inspired him with confidence. C. They enjoyed talking with him about it. D. They made fun of him but his mom gave courage to him. 26. When did the Cheer Man come to Sam’s home? A. When Sam was ten. B. When Sam was dreaming, C. When Sam was holding a birthday party. D. When Sam was watching a soccer game. 27. What lesson did Sam learn from the experience? A. Believe in oneself. B. An encouraging mom is important. C. Don’t be afraid of others and keep on. D. Believe in a dream and everything is possible. C I have been lucky enough to be right next to dolphins playing in perfect surf, using the power of the waves to travel even faster than they normally swim. There is no doubt that they are enjoying themselves and, though of course I can’t swim like a dolphin, I can experience this same fun when bodysurfing. Bodysurfing involves riding on a wave with no help from any buoyant (有浮力的) device such as a surfboard, which makes it the “purest” form of surfing. In fact, it is one of very few extreme sports that can be practiced using nothing but human body. Nevertheless, it is more enjoyable and safer if you use flippers (large flat rubber shoes). This is because they enable you to swim faster, and so catch waves and surf along them more easily. A wetsuit is also advisable unless you are bodysurfing in tropical seas. Another aid is handboard, a mini-surf board about the size of an iron, held in one hand to generate more speed along the wave. These are frowned on by purists, however. To catch a wave, swim to where the waves break and, as one approaches, start swimming towards the beach. You must try to travel at the same speed as the wave and, if you do it correctly, you will feel the wave lifting pushing you forwards. Then try and cut along the surface of the wave. Bodysurfing is not a professional sport, but it does have its own unofficial world championship — the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic — held each year at the legendary Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. Local bodysurfers compete against athletes from places such as Australia, Brazil, Japan or France, in terrifying walls of water above the razor-sharp coral reef (珊瑚礁). Famous bodyboarder Mike Stewart has won the event no fewer than 12 times, and Kelly Slater, the greatest surfer in history, has also competed. 28. What can we know from the first paragraph? A. The author can bodysurf. B. The author is a dolphin trainer. C. Dolphins can enjoy themselves. D. The author can’t swim like a dolphin. 29. What does the underlined phrase “frowned on” mean? A. Thought to be easy. B. Believed comfortable. C. Found enjoyable. D. Considered bad. 30. How many aid devices are recommended as for bodysurfing? A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six. 31. What’s the author’s attitude towards bodysurfing? A. Disapproving. B. Envious. C. Favorable. D. Indifferent. D Wang Pei, a 22-year-old marketing student at Beijing Wuzi University, woke up to the sound of her phone ringing on the first day of winter vacation. With a cloudy mind and a bad temper she picked up the phone. The call was from Ogilvy&Mather, the international advertising agency of her dreams. To her disappointment, she messed up the phone interview. Wang’s experience is not unusual. Companies increasingly use phone interviews to narrow down the job applicant pool. What are employers looking for in this round of hiring? HR specialists value a confident manner and quick-wit (急智) in job applicants. It’s the first stage of the employers to specially seek out these qualities. But this seemingly simple task is complicated by the fact that phone interviews sometimes happen randomly, as was the case for Wang. The key is not to be caught off-guard (毫无防备). Try to set a time for an interview to take place and be sure to charge your phone in advance. In terms of quick-witted answers, HR specialists suggest applicants prepare for the “big four” questions: introduce yourself; your biggest strength or weakness; what are your salary expectations; where do you expect to be in five years? Practicing these questions along with your resume (简历) is of great importance. Though some phone interviews take hours to finish, most last a mere 10 to 20 minutes. It is recommended that interviews give details, but don’t spend too much time on any one answer. After a few sentences, ask: Is this what you were after, or would you like me to go in a different direction or provide greater detail? These questions show your level of consideration and ability to communicate effectively, which are exactly what HR specialists expect from job candidates. As for long interviews, there are also some particular points that need your attention. 32. Which fact did NOT contribute to Wang’s failure? A. Her unclear mind. B. Her answering the phone in anger. C. Her high expectation to be admitted. D. Her getting an unscheduled interview. 33. In Paragraph 3&4, HR specialists advise a job applicant to ________. A. charge more than one phones B. give as many details as possible C. show off one’s confidence and quick-wit D. deal with the questions wisely 34. What would be the best title for this passage? A. Get Phone Interviews Well Prepared B. Follow HR Specialists’ Suggestions C. Meet the Unusual Phone Interviews D. Keep Your Phone Interview in Mind 35. What will the next paragraph probably talk about? A. How to greet an interviewer properly. B. How to prepare for a long phone interview. C. Communication skills in dealing with a phone interview. D. More applicants9 experience of handling phone interviews. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Welcome to the exciting world of online learning, a new way to earn your degree or master new skills. _36_. Many of the words, figures of speech and references are too _56_ to be understood by current native English speakers. Much of Shakespeare is written in verse limited by rhythm (韵律) and rhyme. As dramatization of real historical events, it is _58_ that the translator have a thorough knowledge of British _59_ Meanwhile, Shakespeare s comedic moments are often _60_ puns (双关语).
