Gilleece looked through camera videos, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Then a young man approached the bench and put something in his pocket. Gilleece posted several pictures on the bar's Facebook page, asking if anybody knew the guy. Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17yearold Prather. Prather admitted having taken the wallet because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but just took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks (码头) into the ocean. Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the bar. There, Prather said that, not getting along with his family, he had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece saw him as a kid rather than a criminal. But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could face prison. Gilleece planned to employ two divers to search for it. Meanwhile, the police wanted Gilleece to bring the teen to the station. He called them and said, “He's going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.” The next day a crowd gathered to watch the two divers search in the waters Prather mentioned. Finally a diver appeared with the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers burst from the crowd. The wallet's owner immediately dropped the charges against Prather. But troubled by Prather sleeping in the cold woods, Gilleece told the teen he could stay with him and his family until he stood on his own feet. He also gave the kid a job at his bar. “Most people would have given the videos to the police, but he chose to help me,” Prather told CBS News. 24.What happened to the newly married woman? A.She lost the wallet at the bar. B.She regretted charging Prather. C.She left her wallet on a bench. D.Her wallet was stolen by Prather. 25.Why did Gilleece take Prather to the docks? A.Rid Prather of the charge. B.Talk with Prather's family. C.Help free Prather from prison. D.Get Prather to work in his bar. 27.Which Can Be the Best Title for the Text? A.A Wedding Ring Was Recovered B.A Wallet Changed a Teen's Life C.Anyone Can Make a Difference D.A Kind Woman Saved a Teen C Planning when to eat meals and snacks and not skipping breakfast, are patterns associated with healthier diets, which could reduce cardiovascular (心血管的) disease risk, according to a new scientific statement published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation. The statement provides information of the current scientific evidence suggesting when and how often people eat may affect risk factors for heart attack, or other diseases. “Meal timing may affect health due to its effect on the body's internal (内部的) clock. In animal studies, it appears that when animals receive food while in an inactive state, such as when they are sleeping, their internal clocks are reset in a way that can change nutrient metabolism (新陈代谢), resulting in greater weight gain, and other diseases. However, more research would need to be done in humans before that can be stated as a fact,” said MariePierre StOnge, Ph.D., writing group chair and an associate professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia University in New York City. The statement stresses that it is still important to eat a healthy diet, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lowfat dairy products, and fish, while limiting red meat, salt and foods high in added sugars, but when and how often a person eats may also affect cardiovascular wellness according to a growing body of research. There is a link between eating breakfast and having lower heart disease risk factors. Studies have found people who eat breakfast daily are less likely to have high blood pressure, and people who skip breakfast—about 20 percent to 30 percent of US adults—are more likely to be overweight, have improper nutrition, or be diagnosed with diabetes. Given people's busy lives, setting time aside to eat without focusing on something else is important. “All activities have a place in a busy schedule, including healthy eating and being physically active,” StOnge said. “Those activities should be planned ahead of time and proper time should be devoted to them.” 28. .How can we try to avoid cardiovascular disease risk by eating? A. Avoiding eating too many snacks. B. Meal timing and having breakfast. C. Planning ahead of time to eat less. D. Not skipping breakfast more often. 29.Which of the group is regarded as a healthy diet according to the text? A. Whole grains, and lowfat dairy products. B. Fruits, vegetables, and more red meat. C. Foods high in added sugars and salt. D. Meat, fish, vegetables and more salt. 30.What should we do if we want to reduce the risk of high blood pressure? A. Skip breakfast often. B. Eat breakfast daily. C. Have proper nutrition. D. Lower heart disease risk. 31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To plan our eating time. B. To make scientific studies. C. To ask us to have breakfast. D. To suggest healthier diets. D Most of the new diseases we humans have faced in the past several decades have come from animals. The more we come into contact with wild animals, the more we risk a so-called disease “spillover(蔓延,溢出)” from animals to humans. “As people move and wildlife move in response to a changing environment, humans and wildlife and animals will come in contact more regularly," said Jeanne Fair from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Fair argues that by shifting (转移) animal habitats, climate change will also make the opportunities for disease spillover more frequent. “Everything is sort of shifting and will shift into the future as the environment changes through climate change," Fair said. Scientists, including climatologists and epidemiologists on Fair's team at Los Alamos, are beginning to model how changes to the climate will impact the spread of infectious diseases. It's early days for this kind of research, but previous studies suggest that extreme weather has already played a role in at least one outbreak. Scientists say drought and deforestation have combined to force bats out of rainforests and into orchards (果园) in Malaysia to find food. Those bats, a common disease reservoir, then passed the Nipah virus through pigs to humans for the first time in the late 1990s. “We' re going by the past data to really predict what's going to happen in the future," Fair said, “And so, anytime you increase that wildlife -human interface (界面), that's sort of an emerging disease hot spot. And so, that's just increasing as we go forward." Jeffrey Shaman, head of the climate and health program at Columbia University's public health school, argues we don't yet know whether climate change will cause a net increase in infectious disease rates globally. For example, mosquitoes carry disease that affects millions of people across the world every year. As their habitats expand in some parts of the world, they might contract diseases elsewhere. Shaman says what we know for certain about climate change is that it will make it harder to predict where disease outbreaks will pop up. 32. How does climate change affect the spread of disease according to Fair? A. By breaking animals' habits. B. By increasing animals' varieties. C. By promoting animals' breeding. D. By changing animals' living environment. 33. What is the example of bats for in paragraph 3? A. Explaining the influence of Nipah virus. B. Proving the harm of bats to human beings. C. Showing the effects of climate change on disease. D. Presenting scientists' early study about the cause of disease. 34. What can we infer from Fair's words in paragraph 4? A. Humans should give up studying animals. B. Past data can solve the problems in the future. C. Disease hot spots will disappear if animals die out. D. Frequent contact with animals can cause disease outbreaks. 35. What could be the best title for the text? A. Climate Change and Disease Spillover B. Animals' Interaction with Humans C. Early Studies about Extreme Weather D. Scientists" Prediction for Disease Outbreaks 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In any survey of self-made millionaires, you’re likely to notice the key to their success is that they never stop learning. W: No, although I come from France, but now I’m in Brazil. And we both want to practice our English. (Text 2) W: Let’s get something to drink and then go and see the elephants. M: But the dolphin show starts in two minutes. I really want to see that. We can get a cup of tea afterwards. W: Good idea. (Text 3) W: How much is it for a double room per night? M: It is 90 dollars. And it would be 80 dollars if you book more than 5 rooms at a time. W: Good. I’d like to make a reservation for 8 rooms on July 21. (Text 4) W: You look happy. M: I am. I had my performance evaluation today. W: So it went well? M: Yes. The manager said my interpersonal skills are great. I work well with others. (Text 5) M: Did you get a present for Molly’s birthday? W: Yes. She loves to listen to Johnny Holden’s music. And she’s got all his CDs. Then I saw this book that introduces Johnny Holden’s life, so I got her this. M: Great idea! (Text 6) W: At last! I thought you weren’t coming! What happened? The film started five minutes ago! M: Oh, I had problems getting here. The bus I’d wanted to come on broke down just outside town, so I had to run back home again to ask my dad to bring me in his car. W: Then why have you got your bike with you? M: Well, Dad couldn’t find the key to his car, so this was the only other possibility, unfortunately. And now I’d better look for somewhere to park it. (Text 7) M: Hello. W: Hi. I’ve just been to collect your new basketball shirts from the school. M: Yeah, what do they look like? W: I don’t know if you like them as much as last season’s — you had white ones then, remember? And the yellow picture on it made it easy to see you guys on the basketball field, didn’t it? But this year they’re just plain, no picture. Same color, anyway. I can bring them to your house to see what you think. M: OK. W: But it’s a bit late to change them now, I guess. (Text 8) W: Hello, Dan. I was sorry to hear that you had an accident last week. How did it happen and how are you feeling now? M: Well, I was riding on my bicycle along the street when a taxi driver suddenly made a sharp turn in front of me. I could not stop my bicycle in time and I was knocked down. Fortunately, I only got a broken arm and a broken leg. The doctor said that I would have to stay in hospital for at least a week. W: Do your arm and leg hurt now? M: Yes, my leg hurts badly, but I can bear the pain. The only thing that I’m worried about is my classes. You know, our teacher said next week we would have our mid-term exams. W: Well, don’t worry about the exams. I can help you. I can lend you my notes. M: Thank you, but I don’t really want to stay here that long. Anyway, thank you for coming to see me. (Text 9) M: Did you hear about the plan to build an amusement park at Discovery Bay? W: No. Tell me about it. M: Look. It’s all here in the newspaper. W: Oh, no, this will really destroy the environment. The cars, the crowds, oh, I don’t dare to imagine what will happen in the future. M: Oh, I don’t know. Sure, there’ll be a bit more pollution and crowds, but tourists will be good for the economy, don’t you think? W: I guess so, but Discovery Bay is such a quiet and peaceful place right now, and lots of families with small kids live there. I really like it now. M: Well, the locals should enjoy the new place as much as the tourists. Right now there are no interesting places here. W: Well, I don’t know. And it says here that they’re going to fill part of the bay. What will happen to the dolphins? They’ll be wiped out, I bet. They’re rare now you know, and they live in the bay. M: Well, you can’t stop progress. W: Unfortunately, that’s probably true. (Text 10) W: Good morning, everyone. Here is the Entertainment Guide for this week. There is another exhibition of posters in Town Hall. Last year it was early holiday posters; but this time the exhibition will be of railway posters. The exhibition opens on Monday. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open from ten until five every day. If you can spend some time there, I’m sure you will enjoy yourself. There’s a special feature at the Arts Center this week. It’s the very first performance of a new play, The Rose Garden, by a local writer, Alan Brown. This is Alan’s first stage play, but many of you have enjoyed his films on television. The play will be on Saturday. Be sure to book your seats as soon as possible, if you have not done so yet. If you like his films very much, I believe this play won’t let you down. There is also a film, Detective in the Shadows, being shown this Sunday at the Arts Center cinema. Book the tickets in advance just in case that you can’t get a ticket the very day you come to see the film. The place to go to make reservations is the Tourist Center. It is open from nine thirty until four thirty every day except Sunday and Monday. Also, you can book tickets on the Internet, just go to www.Artcentercinema.com.查看更多
