The thing I like most about my job is the chance to meet people from different cultures. I spend a lot of my time handing out food and drinks and clearing up people’s rubbish. I certainly don’t feel very excited about going home at two in the morning.‎ Frank I enjoy playing around with word puzzles. So I sent a couple in to a local newspaper and I suppose it is a strange way to spend your day surrounded by dictionaries and books, but it’s great because I’m just doing what I like.‎ Gemma I love music and listen to it all the time, even when I go jogging. As for my job – you really can’t be shy in this kind of work, and you have to be very patient because sometimes we practice for hours before we get it right. When we’re on tour, we work for several weeks with no breaks and you can get really tired. For relaxation, whenever I get a holiday, I go straight to a sunny beach.‎ Raoul Most people think I spend my day chopping (切) vegetables and washing dishes, but it’s not that simple. I have to be really careful with the food and keep everything very clean. The biggest problem is my boss – he shouts at me all the time – even, for example, if I forget to wash up one plate. Actually, I’m hoping to find a new job soon because I don’t get much time off.‎ ‎1. What’ s the biggest attractions of Megan’s job?‎ ‎ A. The long holidays B. Handing out food to people.‎ ‎ C. Getting to know different people D. The pleasant working environment ‎2. Who love working with words? ‎ ‎ A. Megan B. Frank C. Gemma D. Raoul ‎3. What problem does Raoul face?‎ ‎ A. His strict boss. B. He is careless. ‎ C. His terrible cooking. D. He fails to get enough sleep B After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.‎ One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years. ‎ The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock. ‎ ‎4. The reason for Robert’s attempts to kill himself was that _________.‎ A. he had to live in a dark and silent world B. a terrible traffic accident happened to him C. he was struck by the lightning once more D. nobody in the world cared about him ‎ ‎5. We can learn from the text that ________. ‎ A. Robert’s wife sent for doctors immediately after the shock B. many doctors came because Robert was badly injured C. a sudden injury in the head led to Robert’s recovery D. there was no correct explanation for Robert’s recovery ‎7. What’s the best title of the whole passage?‎ A. What a Sudden Shock B. Robert Edwards and His Wife C. An Unforgettable Experience D. A Terrible Electrical Accident ‎ C A popular Chinese mobile game, “King of Glory,” has been criticized for promoting an inaccurate representation (展现) of ancient Chinese history.‎ State media Guangming Daily published an article on March 28 blaming the game for “distorting history.” The article claimed that, despite using many famous names from Chinese history, "King of Glory" completely misrepresented the figures’ true stories and status.‎ According to the newspaper, famous poet Li Bai from the Tang Dynasty became an assassin ( 刺 客 ),while noted doctor Bian Que from the Spring and Autumn Period was cast as an expert on poison. More than 60 characters in the game were characters from history, including many from the classic novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.”‎ ‎“They (the characters in the game) not only travel through time and space to fight together, but also take on historical figures’ names with no connection at all to their experiences in history,” the newspaper argued, adding that this characteristic could easily confuse young players. Some 54 percent of the game’s players are aged between 11 and 20, the newspaper added.‎ ‎“King of Glory” is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game designed by Tencent Games. It was launched in 2015. In 2016, the total profit of the game reached nearly 7 billion RMB, some 18 percent of the total profit for mobile gaming in China.‎ The Guangming Daily article was met with significant support and approval. Some people pointed to online search results for the historical figures, which increasingly provide information about the characters in the game rather than the real historical figures.‎ However, some hit back at the criticism, arguing that games are supposed to be creative, and that “King of Glory” doesn’t claim to be set in any specific historical period.‎ ‎“I am aware that there are many young players, some even in primary school. Some might be affected by the game in certain ways, but it can do a lot of good if students become interested in the characters and do more research to that end,” one “King of Glory” player told the People’s Daily Online.‎ ‎8. What does the underlined word “distorting” in paragragh 2 mean?‎ A. Reflecting. B. Recording. C. Twisting. D. Creating.‎ ‎9. Which is NOT true according to the passage?‎ A. About half of the game’s players range from11 to ‎20 in age.‎ B. Many young players become interested in the historical figures through the game.‎ C. You may get information about the assassin Li Bai in the game through a search engine.‎ D. In 2016 the total profit for mobile games in China amounts to about 39 billion RMB.‎ ‎10. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?‎ A. To explain why the game is popular.‎ B. To convince people that the game is distorting history.‎ C. To introduce the game to the public.‎ D. To present that the game has become a target for criticism.‎ ‎11. What’s the author’s attitude towards the game?‎ A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Favorable. D. Disapproving.‎ D Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.‎ In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.‎ Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?‎ Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.‎ 12. ‎ The king of France and England in the 16th century closed bath house because_______. .‎ A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment ‎ B. they thought bath houses were to dirty to stay in C. they believed disease could be spread in public baths D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease ‎13. Which of the following best describes Henry IV's attitude to bathing?‎ ‎ A. Afraid. B. Curious. C. Approving. D. Uninterested.‎ ‎14. How does the passage mainly develop?‎ A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.‎ C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance.‎ ‎15. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?‎ A. To stress the role of dirt. B. To introduce the history of dirt.‎ C. To call attention to the danger of dirt. D. To present the change of views on dirt.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Nobody wants to reach the end of their life and experience regret. Instead, we desire to experience satisfaction with the life we’ve been given. 16 . To live a life without regret in the future, you should try to stay away from the following four common unhealthy habits.‎ ‎ 17 It is good to have a destination to go to but it is the journey that matters in the end. Too often, we live our lives from destination to destination. But life is not lived merely in these destinations. In fact, it is far more often lived in the pathways between them. We should appreciate the joy in the journey rather than always hurry to the next destination.‎ Be defined by your negative circumstances. Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most. This is an important truth and an important promise. Our lives should not be defined by the negative circumstances that happened in our past. They may have affected our lives, but they do not write the final chapter. 18 ‎ Focus entirely on yourself. The size of our universe becomes smaller considerably when we place ourselves at the center. 19 t On the contrary, those who see their life as an opportunity to bring joy to others quickly find it themselves.‎ ‎20 Every excess (过量) adds burden to our lives. And yet we continue to pursue and accumulate more than we need—more houses, more cars, more clothes, and more dishes. Owning less means less cleaning, less burden, less anxiety, and less stress each day. It provides the space and opportunity to pursue the things in life that bring lasting satisfaction to our lives.‎ A. Blame everybody else.‎ B. Carry more than you need.‎ C. It is we ourselves who hold the pen.‎ D. Miss the joy of the journey for the destination.‎ E. Only a fool believes the wide road is necessarily the right road.‎ F. The fact is that too many people experience regret at the lives they chose to live.‎ G.
