A Worlds of Fun Location: Worlds of Fun is located off Highway 435 in Kansas City, Missouri. History: Worlds of Fun was opened on May 26, 1973, at a cost of 25 million dollars. Loosely themed around the Jules Verne book, Around the World in Eighty Days, the park was founded by Hunt Midwest Company. In 1982, Hunt Midwest bought a nearby water park, Oceans of Fun. In 2013, Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun were combined to a one ticket admission, providing all guests with access to 235 acres of amusement and water rides. Hours: Worlds of Fun is open from April through Halloween. Tickets: Buy and print online. Always try to buy your tickets in advance to save time when you get to the park. Reservations: Worlds of Fun sells “Fast Lane” cards that save riders’ time by allowing them to bypass the majority of wait for most of rides and attractions including Mamba, Prowler, and Patriot. Ride as many times as you want all day long. Strategy: Most visitors tend to begin the day with Prowler, the hottest attraction in the park. Use that tendency to your advantage and head to the Patriot first. After that, try the Dragons. Then work your way back to the Prowler. After riding the Prowler, there is only one coaster left, Mamba. Hit it next. If the park is not very crowded, you can ride Boomerang on the way to Mamba. After riding Mamba, head back for a ride on the Wolf. By then you will have tried most of the popular rides and attractions in the shortest possible time. News: In 2017, Worlds of Fun is adding Steel Hawk, a ride that will take guests up 301 feet in the air and spin them at a 45-degree angle for a 60-second flight. Wait to have a try! 21. He fired people who didn’t do well without giving them a second chance. “Watson,” said Mr. Smith, “this past year your department hasn’t earned money. We’re going to drop that department. It’s finished. I’m sorry---but you’ll have to go.” “But, sir---if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.” “What’s that!” said the Boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.” “I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star trackman(田径运动员)and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ(冠军)there.” The Boss sat perfectly still for a long time---a faraway look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said, “We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means long hours---maybe more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.” Watson got out, with surprise in his face. Then the Boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School---written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read: I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere when you’re a cripple(跛脚的人). But don’t worry about me, Dad. They’ve got a good chemistry department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. Something big---that he won’t even know about. Your son, Herbie 24. The underlined word “drop” in Paragraph 2 could best be replaced by _______. A. punish B. fall C. close D. sell 25. It can be inferred from the text that Champ is _________. A. a classmate of Watson’s son B. the son of Mr. Smith’s friend C. Watson’s son D. Mr. Smith’s son 26. From the text we know that Herbie _______. A. made friends with many boys B. was a college student C. died from an incurable disease D. didn’t live to grow up 27. Watson was given a second chance because_________ A. a man was needed in another department B. Mr. Smith wanted to realize his son’s dream C. Mr. Smith wanted to help Watson’s son D. Herbie told Mr. Smith to do so in his letter C Genetically Modified (GM,转基因) food is unfortunately becoming more popular among farmers and food processors. Crops are being genetically modified to resist insects, plant diseases, insecticides(杀虫剂). Plants are also modified to look bigger and better. Unfortunately the end goal isn’t providing nutrition for people, it’s to increase profit and to make food look better. In fact many modern fruits and vegetables are twice the size of what they used to be while having far less vitamins, and not tasting good either. Now research is showing that genetically modified food might even be bad for you. GM organisms are organisms that have genes inserted into their DNA in order to offer certain characteristics. In this way you can make it better, or make it last longer. Jeffrey M. Smith has published a study about the dangers of GM food. It was discovered that when GM soy was fed to female rats they found that all their young died within 3 weeks compared to a natural 10% death rate. Their young were also born smaller and they later had problems becoming pregnant. A study of pigs found that they also became infertile(不育) after eating GM corn. Many people are eating GM food without even realizing it. The solution to this problem is simple. Human beings existed in their current form for hundreds of thousands of years. For most of that time we ate a diet consisting of meat, fruit, vegetable, fish, eggs and nuts. This is our perfect diet which leads us to live a healthy and long life. But over the last 30 years North America has experienced diabetes, cancer and heart disease. All is due to the misinformation provided by lobby groups who work on behalf of the manufacturers of GM food. The way to avoid obesity, heart disease and cancer is by eating like our stone-age ancestors. 28. According to the author, what inspired the popularity of GM crops? A. High profits. B. Rich nutrition. C. Unique taste. D. Energy saving 29. What had we better do if we want to stay healthy according to the text? A. Eat more fruit. B. Be vegetarians. C. Eat more grains. D. Eat traditional foods. 30. We can infer that the lobby groups (in Paragraph 4) are people who are ______. A. scientists who give out false information because of carelessness B. doctors who try to profit from patients who suffer from unhealthy food C. workers who try to cheat customers for the benefits of food producers D. agricultural technicians who are responsible for promoting new product 31. What can be the best title for the passage? A. GM Food Is More Popular. B. GM Food Is Very Dangerous. C. GM Food Produces More Nutrition. D. GM Food Brings In Higher Profit. D Public transport is decreasing in the rich world. To those who have to squeeze(挤) onto the number 25 bus in London, or the A train in New York, the change might not be noticeable. But public transport is becoming less busy in those places, and passenger numbers are flat or falling in almost every American city. That is true despite healthy growth in urban populations and employment. Although transport agencies blame their unpopularity on things like roadworks and broken signals, it seems more likely that they are being less competitive. App-based taxi services like Uber and Lyft are more comfortable and convenient than trains or buses. Cycling is nicer than it was, and rental bikes are more widely available. Cars are cheap to buy, thanks to cut-rate loans, and ever cheaper to run. Online shopping, home working and office-sharing mean more people can avoid travelling altogether. The competition is only likely to grow. More than one laboratory is developing new transport technologies and applications. Silicon Valley invented Uber and, more recently, apps that let people rent electric scooters(滑板车) and then abandon them on the pavement. China created sharing-bicycles and battery-powered "e-bikes", both of which are spreading. There is some doubt whether most people make clear distinctions between public and private transport. They just want to get somewhere, and there is a cost in time, money and comfort. An ideal system would let them move across a city for a single payment, transferring from trains to taxis to bicycles as needed. Building a platform to allow that requires much sweet-talking of traditional networks as well as technology firms, which is probably the secret to keeping cities moving. 32. What is the change in public transport in big cities? A. It is becoming busier. B. It is getting less popular. C. There are fewer traffic delays. D. There is more new transport. 33. In the author’s opinion, the reason for the decrease of public transport is that ______. A. there are roadworks and broken signals B. people are becoming healthier and employed C. cars and bikes are more and more available D. transport agencies are seemingly less competitive 34. How does the author develop his idea in Paragraph 3? A. By giving examples B. By providing research results C. By stating arguments D. By comparing different approaches 35. According to the text, the key to keeping cities moving is ____________. A. to develop an ideal system that satisfies everyone B. to build a platform that appeals to transport agencies C. to provide people with more means of transportation D. to satisfy the needs of both traditional networks and technology firms 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Apologizing the Right Way to a Friend Why are apologies so difficult? Saying you are sorry can be one of the most difficult things you do. But we all make mistakes, so you'll probably have an occasion when you need to apologize. Perhaps you had a big blow up and realized later you reacted poorly. 36 Whatever the reason, apologizing can help you both heal and move on from the situation. 37 First, when you acknowledge that you did something wrong, with an apology, you take responsibility for your actions, which allows your friend to forgive you and strengthens your friendship. Second,an apology gives you sincerity as a friend, which also makes your relationship improved. 38 , but that doesn’ t mean you still shouldn’ t apologize. Now, what are elements of a proper apology? 39 ,depending on what the offense was, where it was done, and who you are apologizing to. In general, a good apology should include the following: a request for their attention,an acknowledgment of what happened, sincerity in admitting you did something wrong and the words. "I'm sorry" or “I apologize." Here are things never to say when apologizing. Note that the art of apologizing involves taking responsibility. Never apologize as a way to “shut someone up” when they are saying you hurt their feelings and you don’t think you did. 40 ,you should talk things through with your friend until you see why they are hurt or how you came across. You'll really need to self-reflect so you can see things from your friend' s point of view. A. When you make your apology in person B. If you really believe you did nothing wrong C. Apologies benefit friendships in a variety of ways D. The way you apologize is going to be slightly different E. Or maybe you just didn’t show support when you needed to F. Apologizing the right way, however, may take a little practice G. Sometimes our friends forgive us easily for the minor things we do wrong 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 The town I live in is about to put cameras at all traffic lights to catch people who run red lights.
