It was my mother's idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition. With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home. “ How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked. “ None.” “ Where did you go?” “ The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.” “ What did you do?” “ Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.” “ You just stood there?” “ Didn't sell a single one.” “ My God, Russell!” Uncle Allen put in, “ Well, I've decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分 镍币). It was the first nickle I earned. Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence(自信), and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home. One day, I told my mother I'd changed my mind. I didn't want to make a success in the magazine business. “ If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “ you'll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me. My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father's plain workman's life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband's people for true life and love. 21.Why did the boy start his job young? What if I told you that it's a sales strategy that pretty much all phone companies use to force people into buying new phones? In late 2015, when Lisa Young was in charge of iOS security and beta software testing teams, her boss revealed a dark secret to her, saying that they were using a new strategy that would purposely slow down older phones every time the phone would upgrade to the latest operating system. This new method would force customers to buy the latest phone model, increasing sales by 70%. She was a little disturbed to hear the news, but she just kept her head down and continued to do her job. After a while, the guilt of being involved with such a shady sales model started to weigh heavily on her. "How could a multi-billion dollar corporation continue to take advantage of the public like this?" she thought. In March of 2017, she contacted a reporter from CNN to finally leak the information concerning Apple slowing down phones. The scandal (丑闻) went viral overnight, and every media outlet in the world, in every language was talking about it, making it one of the biggest controversies in consumer electronics history. A week later, she was secretly let go after her 8 years of service. Although she was taking a huge risk going against one of the most powerful corporations in the world, she felt a sense of relief exposing it. The public deserved to know and the fear became her motivation to find a way to destroy their shady sales model. Several of her colleagues were fired with her. They quietly united, and after a year of extensive research they designed a unique product called CircaCharge that would reverse the negative effects of "software updates". Phone companies have recently got wind of their overnight success with CircaCharge and are trying to do everything they can to make this product illegal and ban it forever. Lisa and her team have made unbelievable progress in increasing battery life, battery health, and optimizing phone performance, and they will continue to develop new technology that will beat phone companies at their own game until they change their ways. 24.What can we learn about the new method mentioned in paragraph 2? A.It is essential in the latest operating system. B.It benefits users in upgrading their old phone. C.It fools customers into buying the latest model on purpose. D.It is a successful sales strategy for advertising new softwares. 25.What does the underlined phrase "kept her head down" in paragraph 3 refer to? A.Shook her head. B.Nodded to show approval. C.Pretended to know something. D.Tried not to show she knows something. 26.From the passage, we know ________. A.it's too tough for Lisa and her team to increase battery life B.CircaCharge helps phone companies with software updates C.Lisa struggles to force phone companies to change their current ways D.phone companies find it essential to ban their illegal software for updating 答案: CDC 解析: 24.根据文章第二段中的"they were using a new strategy... This new method would force customers to buy the latest phone model, increasing sales by 70%"可知,新的策略故意欺骗消费者并迫使消费者去买最新款的手机。 25. 26.根据全文内容尤其是最后一段中的"they will continue to develop new technology that will beat phone companies at their own game until they change their ways"可推知,Lisa 以及她的团队正在开发新技术,这些技 术将击败这些电话公司,直到电话公司能改变他们的销售策略。 C People asked to imagine how flooding or droughts would affect particular people or places were more likely to engage in environmentally friendly actions. Many people view climate change as a distant threat. But having them imagine the tangible (有形的) consequences of resulting droughts or floods may help change this idea and encourage pro-environmental behavior, a new study suggests. Researchers asked 93 college students to read a report on temperature anomalies (异常),floods and other climate change-related events that have affected the island. The scientists then asked 62 of the participants to write down three ways in which such phenomena might impact their future lives. Half the people in that group were instructed to imagine such situations in detail. The remaining 31 students did not complete either the writing or imagining steps, acting as a control group. All the participants then rated their ideas of climate change risks by responding to questions such as "How likely do you think it is that climate change is having serious impacts on the world?" They used a scale from 1 ("very unlikely") to 7 ("very likely"). The average score was higher among subjects who had been asked to envision detailed situations than among those who had not. The results were later confirmed in a second experiment involving 102 participants. Participants in the first experiment who had imagined the effects of climate change were more likely to say they would use air conditioning in an energy-saving manner. In the second experiment, nearly two thirds of people in the visualizing (想象) group signed up to help clean a beach, compared with 43 percent in the nonvisualizing one. And when offered a choice of a vegetarian (素食主义的) or nonvegetarian lunch box, nearly half the visualizers selected the environmentally friendlier meatless choice-compared with about 28 percent of the nonvisualizers. The researchers did not track people to see if they behaved differently in their day-to-day lives-something further studies should examine, says study co-author Wen-Bin Chiou. Moreover, the research "should be done again in other places with other populations," says Robert Gifford, a professor of psychology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, who was not involved in the work. The findings could be applied to raise public concern about climate change, Chiou says. For example, he suggests that news reports about the phenomenon could include vivid descriptions of its effects on people's lives and ask readers to imagine experiencing such impacts. Having virtual-reality demonstrations (展示) in local science museums of the consequences of climate change would be another way of putting the research into practice, Chiou adds. 27.Which of the following statements about the study is true? A.Only one experiment was carried out for the study. B.Professor Robert Gifford played a key role in the study. C.The control group only completed the writing step in the experiment. D.Participants asked to imagine detailed effects scored higher than those who weren't. 28.Future studies will probably be about whether ______. A.it is true of other populations in other places B.more money will be donated to the people affected by climate change-related events C.people choose vegetarian lunch boxes in their daily lives D.climate change will cause people to think about joining in a control group 29.To put the research into practice, Wen-Bin Chiou suggests that ______. A.the government call on people to live a low-carbon life B.people use air conditioning in an energy-saving manner C.people experience possible effects of climate change through virtual reality facilities D.news reports provide vivid descriptions of the effects of climate change on people's lives 30.The passage mainly tells us that ______. A.different people may have different reactions to climate change B.different forms of climate change may affect people's ideas in different ways C.people may change their behavior after thinking about the vivid impacts of climate change D.college students show great concern for the people affected by climate change 答案:DDCC 解析: 27. 由第三段“The average score was higher among subjects who had been asked to envision detailed situations than among those who had not”可知,被要求设想详细情景的受试者的平均得分高于未被要求设想详 细情景的受试者的平均得分。故选 D。 28. For example, he suggests that news reports about the phenomenon could include vivid descriptions of its effects on people, lives and ask readers to imagine experiencing such impacts. The researchers did not track people to see if they behaved differently in their day-to-day lives something further studies should examine, says study co-author Wen-Bin Chiou But having them imagine the tangible (有形的) consequences of resulting droughts or floods may help change this idea and encourage proenvironmental behavior, a new study suggests 但一 项新的研究表明,让他们想象由此产生的干旱或洪水的后果可能有助于改变“许多人认为气候变化是一个遥 远的威胁”这一观念,并鼓励有利于环境的行为。 31_______Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger-prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case. The ridge (隆起) structure on a person's fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by a new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. 32_______Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take. Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer’s ink. They can be recorded easily. 33_______Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. 34_______. When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. 35_______Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained. A.Special techniques are used to "develop" them. B.A fingerprint is an impression of the friction ridges of all part of the finger. C.It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. D.With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time. E.A latent(潜在的) print is the chance reproduction of the friction ridges deposited on the surface of an item. F.His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident. G.Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take. C.It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer's ink. They can be recorded easily. Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. . When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained. As I stood at the base of the mountain range beside a remote African village, the male villagers all repeated the same question : Are you certain you want to climb the mountain? It had 36 been climbed by local and foreign men, and local women, but a Western female, who had 37 unaccompanied and wanted to climb the mountain, was quite 38 . I explained that I'd been 39 for some time—in research and in physical strength—and showed them the 40 I had got from their government authorizing my climb. Eventually, the men agreed to a(n) 50 that seemed to put them at ease with my climb. Besides the local guide I' d hire, they also 51 me to hire three men guards with guns, for protection. As I started walking down the dirt path toward the mountain, I was 52 not only by my new mountain support team, but also by every village woman. While two women walked hand-in-hand with me, the others danced in circles around us as if in 53 of a victory. I knew I wasn't the first Western female to make the climb. But with the women villagers 54 accompanying me, I felt a strong sense of 55 and I suspected they felt the same. 36.A.formally B.fortunately C.especially D.surely 37.A.achieved B.wandered C.explored D.arrived 38.A.rare B.typical C.disgusting D.ridiculous 39.A.consulting B.attempting C.preparing D.operating 40.A.reward B.invitation C.command D.permit 41.A.generous B.pleased C.curious D.regretful 42.A.concerns B.thrills C.surprises D.problems 43.A.happened to B.appealed to C.led to D.belonged to 44.A.bargain B.possibility C.promotion D.dilemma 45.A.fancy B.support C.reason D.disagreement 46.A.finished B.enjoyed C.continued D.suggested 47.A.determined B.annoyed C.delighted D.embarrassed 48.A.alarming B.ringing C.breaking D.exploding 49.A.observe B.realize C.strengthen D.follow 50.A.exchange B.connection C.arrangement D.explanation 51.A.warned B.refused C.advised D.reminded 52.A.joined B.expected C.frightened D.teased 53.A.celebration B.search C.possession D.defence 54.A.carefully B.boringly C.proudly D.patiently 55.A.relief B.accomplishment C.justice D.guilty 答案:DDACD BAABB CABDC CAACB 解析: 36.D. D. 38. I think this is most true for the firefighters. Whenever and wherever 58 (disaster) happen — 911 Attacks in New York 14 years ago or the explosion in Tianjin on Wednesday night — it is always the firefighters 59 take the lead to run to the very center, saving lives by 60 (risk) their own. I cried today near the explosion site, not because of the smoke from the ongoing fire 61 because of a short message a firefighter sent to a trusted friend that went viral online. It reads, “If I cannot make it, my father is 62 (you); and please remember 63 (sweep) my mother’s tomb.” I was thrilled later to learn that he did make it. “Everyone knows it’s 64 (danger) to be a firefighter. But he has always liked it and has done it for 12 years,” his father said. “He survived this time, but no one knows what 65 (happen) next time.” 答案:56.from 57. probably 58. disasters 59. that/who 60.risking 61. but 62.yours 63. to sweep 64. dangerous 65. will happen 解析: 56.from 考查介词.escape from 意为"逃离…",是固定搭配. 59.that/who 考查定语从句. 61.but 考查固定搭配.not …but … 63.to sweep 考查动词不定式.remember to do sth. It is+形容词+to do 意为"做某事是… Dear Jenny, How is your survey on mobile payment going? I’m glad I can help with it. It is generally believed that China is the largest mobile payment market. Nowhere else is the cashless trend more obvious than in China. Most of us are used to paying by scanning QR codes whatever we buy—books, clothes, and electronic devices, to name a few, which is a glimpse into the life of most Chinese like me and my family. With the widespread use of mobile payment, Wechat or Alipay is the most convenient and safest way to pay. We rarely need to carry a wallet or cash at all. Besides, never will we worry about getting fake notes or having to count change. In short, mobile payment has greatly changed people's life in China. Personally, I think mobile payment should be encouraged. First, it has won over consumers with its convenience. Another advantage is that there are often discounts if you make mobile payment, as major online payment platforms are competing to have more consumers use their service. I hope my explanation can be of some help to you. Wish you good luck. Although being famous might sound like a dream come taste, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi( 狗 仔 队)camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids(小报)publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature. According to the psychologists, celebrities(名人)worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. Over little, they feel separated and alone. The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles ghoul filth-slats in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do. Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modem cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their "story" alive forever. If fame is so troublesome. why aren't all celebrities running away from it'? The answer is there arc still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made theme famous in the first place. With these effective approaches, some celebrities relieve the stress and remain popular with fans. Consequently, though being famous is driving some stars crazy, some wise ones enjoy what reputation brings them. One possible version: Living in the public gaze, stars suffer from great pressure.(要点 1) What’s worse, anxiety over their public appearance robs them of the objective self-image, which leads to the feeling of isolation in the long term.(要点 2) While being tracked has been a headache to celebrities for centuries, modem cameras and the Internet make it harder to be famous nowadays.(要点 3. 4) However, by dealing with the stress wisely, stars still can stay popular and happy.(要点 5 )
