Her body was found in her home shortly after she took part in a waterdrinking contest that was held by a local radio show. Called “Hold Your Wee For A Wii”, the contest organizers promised a free Wii video game machine to those who drank the most water without going to the bathroom. The woman who died drank about 2 gallons of water during the contest. When she and other participants complained of discomfort and showed signs of pains, they were laughed at by the organizers. This tragic news story shows the importance of understanding why drinking too much water can be dangerous to your health. Consuming more water than you need can increase your total blood volume (容量). And since your blood volume exists within a closed system, increasing your blood volume puts unnecessary stress on your heart and blood vessels (血管). Your kidneys (肾) must work overtime to get rid of extra water out of your system. Your kidneys are not a pair of pipes. Flushing more water through your kidneys doesn't necessarily help it become cleaner. Rather, your kidneys can get damaged by unnecessary wear and tear over time. And drowning your system with large amounts of water is one of many potential causes of kidney damage. Putting unnecessary stress on your system and your kidneys by consuming unnecessary water is an unnoticeable process. For the average person, it is usually impossible to know that this stress exists, as there are usually no obvious symptoms on a momenttomoment basis. But make no mistake about it: this stress is real and can hurt your health over the long term. 1.Why is the Californian woman mentioned? A.To lead to the topic of the text. B.To tell us a tragic news story about a mother. C.To tell us it can be dangerous to take part in contests. D.To tell us how much water we can drink at most one time. 2.When the participants showed signs of pains, the organizers ________. A.became very concerned B.were laughed at by others C.tried to reduce their pains D.didn't pay much attention to them 3.The stress caused by consuming unnecessary water ________. A.isn't that dangerous B.can never be found out C.is really harmful in the long run D.leads to some obvious symptoms B Neither rain nor snow nor the dark of night can separate Tennessee postal carrier “Mailman Mike” from his 4andahalfyearold friend Carter Lawson — or keep them from their appointments. For the past nine months, the two have teamed up every day in the preschooler's Knoxville neighborhood for a few minutes of delivering mail together and chatting with fellow neighbors. Lawson wants to be a mail carrier when he grows up, and in an inspiring story, his mom told us how mailman Mike Crenshaw has been a role model to her son.“Anyone could just be like‘Go away, kid’, but Mike has really gone out of his way to talk with Carter, ” said Cassie Lawson of the United States Postal Service carrier. Little Carter even got his own uniform to match Mike's.“It's been really cute. I just couldn't believe he got a full mailman's costume,” the postal service employee said. “Every letter carrier has stops he looks forward to and this is the one I look forward to every day,” said Mike. “He's the end of my day, and the best part of my day. Not because it's the end, but because he's such a cute little guy. ” The man and the little boy's connection isn't a surprise to Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers. “Kids respond to mailmen because letter carriers are a friendly, uniformed part of the neighborhood who bring something to their house every day, and are someone they come to recognize and trust,” Rolando said. “It's the same for the elderly, but in addition, letter carriers may be the only person they communicate with all day.” 4.Mike Crenshaw meets Carter Lawson every day to________. A.play with the boy B.get mail from the boy C.listen to the boy's stories D.send mail together with the boy 5.Why does Mike Crenshaw like the last stop of his day? A.It is where he lives. B.It is where he is paid. C.He wants to be with Carter. D.He can finish his work by then. 6.What can we infer from Fredric Rolando's words? A.Mailmen are usually not well respected. B.What letter carriers do is not just sending letters. C.The elderly don't like communicating with others. D.People should learn to recognize and trust each other. 7.What is the best title for the text? A.A letter carrier is praised for helping a kid B.A mailman makes a little boy's dream come true C.Every letter carrier has stops he looks forward to D.The importance of letter carriers cannot be ignored C Dust on furniture may be bad news for waistlines (腰围). But it's far too early to add dusting to a weightloss plan. Dietary fats and other materials that make up indoor dust can send a signal to human fat cells, telling them to grow. That process, in turn, might slow the body's rate of burning energy. Such changes could add to any weight problems a person might have. “We don't know what that means to longterm health and certain diseases yet,” says Heather Stapleton, one of the study's authors. But she notes that her team's findings also raise a question of whether pollutants (污染物) in dust might play some role in the growing, global problem of obesity. Stapleton and her colleagues collected dust from homes and offices. Studies found that some materials in the dust could turn on a protein (蛋白质) called PPARgamma 1. It's found in many human tissues. Turning this protein on can cause fat cells to grow. Researchers think this protein may be involved in obesity. But a second study now finds evidence that certain fats are mostly to blame. Cooking oils may send out some of these fats into the air, where they eventually find their way into house dust. Or, the authors say, the fats might enter house dust as part of the hair or skin cells shed (脱落) by people or pets. “While the findings are amazing,” says Mitchell Lazar, another study author, “these findings need to be taken as very preliminary.” Indeed, he adds several cautions about how the findings should be understood. “For one thing, people eat these fats in foods all of the time. That is likely to be a lot more than would be consumed from indoor dust,” he said. 8.What can be concluded from the research? A.Dust harms people's health. B.Dust can help people lose weight. C.Dust is a cause for some diseases. D.Dust may have something to do with weight. 9.What do we know about PPARgamma 1? A.It comes from dust. B.It leads to weight gain. C.It can help get rid of dust. D.It only appears in human bodies. 10.The underlined word “preliminary” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “______”. A.limited B.important C.misleading D.unbelievable 11.What's the best title for the text? A.Can house dust make us fat? B.Why is it important to clean? C.Anything to do to deal with dust? D.What is the best way to lose weight? D We spend around one third of our lives in bed, and the body does a lot of its repair work as we sleep, so enough good quality sleep is very important to our health. It doesn’t stop there, though—some sleep positions are healthier than others. So which sleep position is the healthiest? Sleeping on your back is the healthiest sleep position.Health benefits include avoiding back and neck pain.Because the head is raised above the stomach when you sleep on your back, this position is best for people who suffer from nighttime acid reflux (胃酸逆流) as well.Around 80% of heartburn (胃灼热) sufferers have problems during the night, so sleeping on their back could help a lot of people to enjoy a good night’s sleep. If the sleep position alone is not enough to alleviate the condition, try raising the head of the bed by up to 4 inches by placing blocks under it. When you sleep on your back, your face is in a natural position. This means less wrinkles (皱纹). If you really can’t face sleeping on your back, another healthy sleep position is the side sleep. It’s almost as good as the back position, and it’s better for people who snore(打鼾) and their partners.Whichever sleep position you choose, use a pillow that supports the head and the neck without raising the head unnaturally, as this can bring neck pain. 12.Which is NOT one of the benefits of sleeping on the back? A.It can avoid acid reflux. B.It makes people look younger. C.It helps people get rid of stomach pain. D.It’s good for heartburn sufferers. 13.The underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”. A.make people enjoy B.make people forget C.make it less useful D.make it less serious 14.What does the text mainly talk about? A.Ways to keep us healthy. B.The importance of sleep. C.Healthy positions of sleep. D.Sleep’s repairing functions.] 15.Which part of a magazine may the article appear in? A.Health. B.Sports. C.Science fiction. D.Fashion. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Richard's father died when he was five. Later on he lost his mother.
