Maybe one of these dads will make you remember your own dad!  The male giant water bug doesn’t seem to mind a heavy load on his back for his kids. The female puts about 100 to 150 eggs on the back of the male, and then she leaves. Once the female is gone, the male has to look after the eggs. It usually takes one to two weeks for the eggs to hatch. The father giant water bug jumps around to make sure the growing eggs get enough air and water. All this time he can't fly because of the weight of the eggs growing rapidly on his back.  Now let's turn to the male stickleback fish. When the mother leaves after laying her eggs, the father tends his young. If the young fish go too far away, their father helps with their safe return by carrying them back in his mouth. The male stickleback looks after all his young — as many as 100 — until they can live on their own.  A similar example can be found in emperor penguins living in cold areas. The male emperor penguin goes without food while looking after his egg until it hatches. For about 62 to 67 days, the egg stays on top of the father's feet, in very cold temperatures that drop down to -39° C. As a result, the father may lose ‎ nearly 50 percent of his body weight while waiting for his baby penguin to be born!  5.What do we know about the giantwater bug?‎ A.It is unable to fly.‎ B.The eggs grow on the father's back.‎ C.The male must keep still to hatch the eggs.‎ D.The female looks after her eggs together with the male.‎ ‎6. During the hatching period, the male emperor penguin _______________.‎ A.is unable to eat  B.is fed by the female C.tries to lose some weight D.can't stand the cold weather ‎7. What is the best title for the text?‎ A.Mr. Moms in the Wild ‎ B.Animals Do Have Feelings C.Nature Loves Us like Our Dad D.Childbirth in the Animal Kingdom ‎8. What does the underlined word “tends” in Paragraph 3 mean?‎ A. Waits for B. Forgets about C. Takes care of D. Loses control of C When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer’s claims, the first step is to present the warranty, or any other records which might help at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is ‎ usually settled in the consumer’s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim.‎ Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to ‎ the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter. ‎ Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer ‎ will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear” is better than “This stereo does not work”. The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and firmly as possible. If a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go to a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumer’s rights.‎ ‎ 9. When a consumer finds that his or her purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he or she should do is to ________.‎ A. complain personally to the manager B. threaten to take the matter to court C. write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchase D. show some written proof of the purchase to the store ‎ 10. How can a consumer make his or her complaint more effective, according to the passage A. Explain exactly what is wrong with the item.‎ B. Threaten to take the seller to court.‎ C. Make polite and general statements about the problem.‎ D. Avoid having direct contact with the store manager.‎ ‎11. The phrase “live up to” in this context means ________.‎ A. meet the standard of  B. realize the purpose of C. fulfill the demands of  D. keep the promise of ‎12. The passage tells us ________.‎ A. how to settle a consumer’s complaint about a faulty item B. how to make an effective complaint about a faulty item C. how to avoid buying a faulty item D. how to deal with complaints from customers D People are seeking for opportunities that will assist them in reaching their goals. Marketing yourself can be a good choice, which can help you achieve your goals. Though when people talk about marketing, they usually think that this is about producing a sale, it does not necessarily have to be.‎ ‎    If you are an employee then you want your boss to take your ideas, and if you are on a job hunting then you want to find a good position. So in reality, marketing really leads to sale. So marketing yourself means you are simply “selling” yourself!‎ ‎    The common problem in marketing yourself is that most people think that it is unpleasant to market themselves. They think that marketing concerns only to a business. Of course, this is absolutely not true. People who want to attain the success they desire must promote themselves.‎ ‎    Marketing yourself is a useful tool. The better you market yourself, the more opportunities you will have. Marketing yourself does not really mean telling every person how beautiful and wonderful you are. It means letting your prospective employer know that you exist or you can do something better.‎ ‎    There are actually several different ways of marketing yourself. But there are only two primary ways that you carry out. The first is to find ways to reach out to others and the second is to construct ways in order for the people to find you and make connection with you.‎ ‎    To reach out and touch the lives of others, you have to be a good person and a good employee. In that way your good reputation will follow naturally. Have a brief and concise message that you can share with others. When you market yourself, you tell people who you are and what you can do for others. Plan well and practice your message.‎ In constructing ways for the people to notice and make connection with you, you ‎ must be open to them. Communication is a great opportunity to make an impact especially when you market yourself. You also communicate by what you are wearing. Know the appropriate dress code and have plenty of time to decide what you will wear. ‎ Just remember to make a great first impression! ‎ ‎13. What is the main idea of the passage?‎ A. Marketing yourself is a business.  B. The subject of marketing yourself.  C. The ways of marketing yourself.  D. The problems of marketing yourself. ‎ ‎14.In order to market yourself well, you can do these things EXCEPT ______.‎ A. be open to others  B. praise yourself  C. wear appropriately  D. have a brief and clear message ‎ ‎15.From the passage, we can infer that people good at marketing themselves must be______.‎ A. communicative  B. humorous  C. hardworking  D. beautiful 第二节:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。并在答题卡上涂黑。 ‎ ‎ Four simple ways to stay positive    Trying to stay positive, both in good times and bad,is a great way to improve your quality of life.Try these four methods on a daily basis.    (1) Don't think a lot about negativity.  Of course.Staying positive 24 hours a day, seven days a week is a bit difficult.Letting things get to you is normal, and it's actually healthy to cry or express frustrations once in a while. It's when those negative moments control your life that your emotional balance is at risk. 16  However, don't give that sadness another second in your day.  (2)  17 What you put into your body directly affects how you feel on the outside.Fill yourself with good, healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and limit snacking.Exercise is equally of great importance.Take a few days out of your week for at least a half a hour of activity, and try to stick to a routine. 18 ‎ ‎(3) Be kind to others.‎ ‎ 19 Making someone's day a bit brighter not only puts a smile on his or her face.but also yours as well.Remember to smile and treat each person with pity and respect.Good deeds are contagious (传染的),and your positive attitude may spread among others.  (4) Take it one day at a time.  Being positive isn't an instant thing. It's a steady effort that we follow every hour of every day. 20   Instead, focus on living in the moment and doing what you can to make each moment better.  A.Eat healthy and stay fit.  B.Take your lunch breaks outside.  C.Don't worry about what the future may bring.  D.Gratefulness helps you appreciate life in bad times.  E.Good feelings come from acts of kindness and selflessness.  F.Take a few minutes to feel sad and accept what happened.  G.Even going outside for a walk and enjoying the sunshine improves your mood.‎ 二.完形填空(共40分)‎ 第一节:阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出能填入空白的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。(每小题1.5分;20小题共30分)‎ When I was five years old, I had a toy cat named Smokey.
