Many people believe that when specific muscles are exercised, the fatty tissues (组织) in the immediate area are burned up. The truth is that exercise burns fat from all over the body and not from one specific area. Of course, if you reduce the fat throughout your body, you will certainly see results around your waist too. Some people believe that you need to exercise twice a week in order to keep a sufficient level of physical fitness. However, studies directed by American scientists show that unexercised muscles lose their strength very quickly. Within 48 to 72 hours, you must use the muscles again to reestablish (重建) the good physical effects. And what does that mean to you? American scientists concluded that while daily exercise is most helpful, exercising every other day or three days a week will keep a sufficient level of physical fitness. Is it true that you burn more calories running one mile than walking the same distance? The answer is no. The truth is that you use the same amount of energy whether you walk or run the mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed does not matter. Of course, if you run rather than walk for 30 minutes, you will cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories. If your breathing doesn’t return to normal within 5 minutes after you finish exercising, you have exercised too much. Five minutes or so after exercising, your breathing should be normal, your heart shouldn’t be beating loudly, and you shouldn’t be tired. 24. If you want to reduce the fat around your waist, you should ____. A. do stomach exercise B. exercise the waist C. exercise all the muscles of your body D. run fast for 30 minutes 25. From the second paragraph, we learn that ____. A. we only need to exercise twice a week B. we should exercise three times a week C. muscles lose their strength after 48 hours D. we should exercise every other day, or three days a week 26. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that _________ . A. you will lose more weight running one hour than walking one hour B. whether you run one mile or walk the same distance, you use the same amount of energy C. you will lose more weight running one mile than walking the same distance D. both A and B 27. If you have exercised too much, _______. A. your breathing will take longer than 5 minutes to return to normal after you finish exercising B. your breathing will return to normal within 5 minutes after finishing exercising C. your heart will not be beating loudly D. you will be too tired to move C While IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tells you how smart you are. EQ (Emotional Quotient) tells you how well you use your smartness. Professor Salovery, the psychologist who created the term, EQ, says that it is IQ that gets you hired but it is EQ that gets you promoted. Supported by his research, he suggested that when predicting future successes, a person’s brainpower, as measured by IQ tests, might actually matter less than a person’s character, or EQ. Professor Salovery may be correct. For example, have you ever wondered why some of the best and smartest students in your class end up failing exams? Perhaps it is because of their EQ. People often make the mistake of thinking that EQ is the opposite of IQ. It is not. Although it is hoped that people have both high EQs and IQs, there is little doubt that those with low EQs have a hard time surviving in life. For a long time, researchers discussed if a person’s IQ could be raised. The geneticists said no, while the social scientists said yes. Furthermore, the social scientists said that it was possible to improve a person’s EQ, particularly in terms of “people skills”, such as understanding and communication. Recently, a professor released the findings of a study on senior high school students. When some normal students were introduced to some disabled students, they found that afterwards they were more willing to help people in difficulties. At the same time, there was a marked change in the disabled students’ attitudes. They became more positive about their disabilities and were more eager to try new things. People with high EQs often have positive attitudes towards life and are open to different ideas, so they tend to be more creative in their thinking. Please remember that having a high IQ is helpful but having a high EQ might even be more helpful. 28. According to Professor Salovery, what factor matters the most in predicting whether a person will be successful or not? A. How a person tests his / her brainpower. B. A person’s character. C. How smart a person is. D. A person’s IQ. 29. The second paragraph tells us that . A. people who have a high IQ always have a high EQ B. EQ is the opposite of IQ C. people who have a low EQ tend to have a hard life D. people who have a high EQ always have a high IQ 30. What did the professor find from his study of normal students being introduced to some disabled children? A. Students with disabilities were not open in trying new things. B. There was no change in the normal students. C. The disabled students became more positive and more eager to try new things. D. The disabled students were more willing to help others. 31. Which of the following is the writer’s attitude toward EQ and IQ? A. IQ is more helpful to people than EQ. B. IQ can be raised by understanding and communication. C. EQ can get people hired. D. A high EQ is of great benefit in getting people promoted. D Qing-Feng Steamed Dumpling Shop. Daniang Dumpling. McDonald’s. What do these companies have in common? Well, besides all being fast food chains, their logos are all red. And it’s not a coincidence. Color is one of the many that companies use to connect with customers. And if fast food wasn’t hard enough, those red logos might make it even harder to ignore. The average human can see ten million colors, but red is special. It’s one of the first colors our ancient ancestors thought important enough to name. Early human languages were uncolorful. There were words for “black” and “white” and “red” but not much else. As a result, we have a deeper connection to red than any other color and we react to it in certain ways that actually play to fast food companies’ advantage. For starters, researchers have found that red can cause a sense of urgency. On top of that, it also has an ability to whet (刺激) our appetites. And when you pair those two together, you’ve got the perfect recipe to attract hungry customers who want food, fast. So the red logo isn’t just a welcoming sign. It’s a seduction (诱惑) for your brain. Now, it’s unclear why red makes us feel this way. But perhaps it has something to do with where the word comes from. Many ancient languages first named red from their word for “blood”. But red’s bloody beginning has transformed. During medieval times, for example, red was worn by royals as a status symbol. And today, brides in many parts of India are married in red dress. In fact, red is one of the few colors today that cultures all over the world view positively. And it’s no wonder companies attach so much importance to their logos. After all, we’re a visual species. Despite having five senses, 80% of the information our brains process on a daily basis comes from our eyes. And according to marketing company WebPageFX, nearly 85% of consumers say the main reason they choose one product over the other is color. Just think what McDonald’s would look like in blue, green, or pink! It’s just not the same, right? 32. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text? A. To introduce the origin of the color red. B. To describe the use of colors in marketing. C. To explain why many fast food logos are red. D. To show how fast food companies attract customers. 33. What feeling will people probably have when seeing red fast food logs? A. Relaxation. B. Calmness. C. Eagerness. D. Contentment. 34. The two examples in Paragraph 5 are mentioned to show _________. A. the meaning of red has changed B. Indian people value red C. Red has something to do with blood D. red indicates a high status 35. Why do companies pay much attention to their logos according to Paragraph 6? A. Logos convey their values. B. Logos awaken people’s senses. C. People process information daily. D. People largely rely on what they see. 第二节:七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Art of Slow Reading If you are reading this article in print, chances are that you will only get through half of what I have written. And if you are reading this online, you may not even finish a fifth. __36__ They suggest that many of us no longer have the concentration to read articles through to their conclusion. So are we getting stupider? Actually, our online habits are damaging the mental power we need to process and understand textual information. Round-the-clock news makes us read from one article to the next without necessarily engaging fully with any of the content. Our reading is frequently interrupted by the noise of the latest email and we are now absorbing short bursts of words on Twitter and Facebook more regularly than longer texts. ___37___ But we are gradually forgetting how to sit back, think carefully, and relate all the facts to each other. __38__ A desperate bunch of academics want us to take our time while reading, and re-reading. They ask us to switch off our computers every so often and rediscover both the joy of personal engagement with printed texts, and the ability to process them fully. What’s to be done then? Most slow readers realize that total rejection of the web is extremely unrealistic. They feel that getaway from technology for a while is the answer. ___39___ Personally, I’m not sure whether I could ever go offline for long. Even while writing this article, I am switching constantly between sites, skimming too often, absorbing too little. Internet reading has become too rooted in my daily life for me to change. I read essays and articles not in hard copy but as PDFs. I suspect that many readers are in a similar position.___40___ You can download a computer application called Freedom, which allows you to read in peace by cutting off your Internet connection. Or if you want to avoid being disturbed by the Internet, you could always download offline reader Notepaper for your iPhone. If you’re still reading my article, that is slow reading. A. The Internet is probably part of the problem. B. Now some campaigns are advocating slow reading. C. These are the two findings from the recent research projects. D. But if you just occasionally want to read more slowly, help is at hand. E. Some of them have suggested turning their computers off for one day a week. F. Slow reading can help connect a reader to neighborhood and become popular. G. Because of the Internet, we have become very good at collecting information. In 2009 we were staying at our cousin’s house in Triora, Italy.
