B Scientists at a Nevada earthquake lab tested new bridge designs last Wednesday. The designs have connectors they say are innovative (创新的).The designs were created to better stand violent earthquakes and speed reconstruction efforts after major quake damage. The engineers in University of Nevada, Reno performed the experiments on a huge "shake table." They attempted to simulate (模拟)the violent movements of an earthquake hitting a 100-ton, 70-fbot bridge model. They wanted to see how well it would hold up. Graduate students measured and marked signs of tiny cracks. But no major structural damage was observed in the initial review of the experiments. "The bridge has done better than we expected, said Saiid Saiidi. He is a professor of civil and environmental engineering, also the project leader. He’s done related research for more than 30 years. Bridges are already designed not to fall apart in earthquakes。. But they are often unsafe for travel after big quakes. He said the tested designs used special types of connectors to link pre-made bridge parts. This included high-performance concrete. The parts have been tested on their own. But they were never tested before combined in a bridge model subjected to realistic earthquake movements, like the 1994 Northridge, California quake. Wednesday's test inside the University of Nevada's Earthquake Engineering Laboratory simulated the activities of a quake as large as magnitude 7. 5. The innovative connectors allow for ready-made concrete and other materials to be attached to an existing bridge foundation. This should speed repair and reconstruction. The University of Nevada's Earthquake Engineering Laboratory is the largest of its kind in the United States. The latest project is funded by the California Department of Transportation, which is currently developing plans for 10 pilot projects based on the developing bridge connector technology. 24. Why did the scientists work on the new bridge designs? A. To observe quake damage. B. To measure structural damage. C. To simulate violent earthquakes. D. To accelerate repair and rebuilding of bridges. 25. What is Professor Saiid Saiidi's attitude towards the experiments? A. Satisfied. B. Disappointed. C. Indifferent. D. Curious. 26. Which of the following can describe the experiments? A. They were conducted in a small lab. B. They caused huge cracks on the model. C. They combined bridge parts with connectors. D. They tested the bridges in genuine earthquakes. 27. What is the purpose of the text? A. To solve a problem. B. To present a research result. C. To give practical advice. D. To prevent damage from happening. C Nowadays some companies are attempting to grow seafood from cells in a laboratory rather than harvesting it from the oceans. With massive problems with overfishing worldwide and growing demand for shrinking supplies of seafood, the way fish currently makes its way to our plates isn’t a long-term viable option. Between 1961 and 2016, the average annual increase in global food fish consumption outpaced population growth. Those are figures not sustainable for us, the fish or the environment as a whole. Cellular seafood could be the answer. Just don't make the mistake of calling it lab-grown fish. “None of us in the industry would call it lab-grown seafood,” says Mike Selden, CEO of Finless Foods. “Finless Foods isn’t lab-grown. We experiment and create our science in the lab, but don’t produce there. Our products come from a production base much like a farm as a production base for animals.” Finless Foods is a tech company in San Francisco. Beginning in 2017, it’s been working to bring to market a species of cultured bluefin tuna (蓝鳍金枪鱼) created using cellular technology. Shortly after that, the company produced its first pound of bluefin tuna meat for a cost of about $19,000. Since then, however, it’s been working to bring that price down. Selden terms what Finless Foods is doing as “cell-based seafood”. “We’re growing seafood from real seafood cells,” Selden explained. “We take cells from a fish once, and then grow them endlessly from that. We do the same process that happens inside of a fish and make it happen outside of a fish.” The goal of cellular seafood isn’t to entirely destroy the current seafood industry. Instead, it’s intended to augment it—and perhaps to help reduce some of the more harmful aspects of current fishing practices like overfishing and illegal fishing. And when it comes to certain sea species, this laboratory-based approach could help create a plentiful supply of certain fish without endangering the survival of certain overfished species as a whole. 28. What is the main function of the second paragraph? A. Warning us of the shrinking seafood supplies. B. Stressing the significance of cellular seafood. C. Analyzing the reasons for global overfishing. D. Showing the environmental effect of seafood. 29. What problem with cellular seafood is Finless Foods facing? A. The high cost of its production. B. Its inadequate nutrient content. C. Its potential harmful health effect. D. The complex production process. 30. What does the underlined word “augment” in the last paragraph most probably mean? A. replace B. strengthen C. cancel D. tolerate 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Is Seafood Made Out of Cells? B. Will Seafood Become Cheaper? C. Have We Got Enough Seafood? D. Is Cellular Seafood Sustainable? D This month,Germany’s transport minister,Alexander Dobrindt, proposed the first set of rules for autonomous vehicles(自主驾驶车辆).They would define the driver’s role in such cars and govern how such cars perform in crashes where lives might be lost. The proposal attempts to deal with what some call the “death valley” of autonomous vehicles: the grey area between semi-autonomous and fully driverless cars that could delay the driverless future. Dobrindt wants three things: that a car always chooses property(财产)damage over personal injury; that it never distinguishes between humans based on age or race; and that if a human removes his or her hands from the driving wheel — to check email, say — the car’s maker is responsible if there is a crash. “The change to the road traffic law will permit fully automatic driving,” says Dobrindt. It will put fully driverless cars on an equal legal footing to human drivers,he says. Who is responsible for the operation of such vehicles is not clear among car makers, consumers and lawyers.“The liability(法律责任) issue is the biggest one of them all,” says Natasha Merat at the University of Leeds,UK. An assumption behind UK insurance for driverless cars, introduced earlier this year, insists that a human “ be watchful and monitoring the road” at every moment. But that is not what many people have in mind when thinking of driverless cars.“When you say ‘driverless cars”, people expect driverless cars.” Merat says “You know — no driver.” Because of the confusion,Merat thinks some car makers will wait until vehicles can be fully automated without operation. Driverless cars may end up being a form of public transport rather than vehicles you own, says Ryan Calo at Stanford University,California. That is happening in the UK and Singapore, where government-provided driverless vehicles are being launched. That would go down poorly in the US, however. “The idea that the government would take over driverless cars and treat them as a public good would get absolutely nowhere here,” says Calo. 32.What does the phrase “death valley” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.A place where cars often break down. B.A case where passing a law is impossible. C.An area where no driving is permitted. D.A situation where drivers’ role is not clear. 33.The proposal put forward by Dobrindt aims to __________. A.stop people from breaking traffic rules B.help promote fully automatic driving C.protect drivers of all ages and races D.prevent serious property damage 34.What do consumers think of the operation of driverless cars? A.It should get the attention of insurance companies. B.It should be the main concern of law makers. C.It should not cause deadly traffic accidents. D.It should involve no human responsibility. 35.Driverless vehicles in public transport see no bright future in __________. A.Singapore B.the UK C.the US D.Germany 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项 If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you.
