While studying at BUELI, students have the opportunity of ________. A. discovering their hidden abilities B. learning to be more relaxed in life C. understanding the local people better D. contacting students from other cultures B Michigan State University researchers studied laptop use in an introductory psychology course and found the average time spent surfing the Internet for non-class-related purposes was 37 minutes. Students spent the most time on social media, reading email, online shopping for items and watching videos. Their academic performance suffered. Internet use was a significant predictor of students` final exam scores even when their intelligence and motivation were taken into account, said lead author Susan Ravizza. “The detrimental relationship associated with non-academic Internet use raises debates about the policy of encouraging students to bring their laptops to class when they are unnecessary for class use.” The research was conducted in a one-hour lecture course with 507 students. In all, 127 students agreed to participate in the study, and they were monitored when they went online. Of those participants, 83 went on the Internet for non-class-related purposes in more than half of the 15 lessons during the term and were included in the final analysis. Intelligence was measured by ACT scores. Motivation to succeed in class was measured by an online survey sent to each participant when the term was over. Interestingly, using the Internet for class purposes did not help students` test scores. But Ravizza said she wasn’t surprised. “There were no Internet- based assignments in this course, which means that most of the `academic use` was downloading lecture slides in order to follow along or take notes.” “Previous research has shown that taking notes on a laptop is not as beneficial for learning as writing notes by hand. Once students open their laptops, it is probably fascinating to do other sorts of Internet-based tasks that are not class- relevant.” In her courses, Ravizza has stopped posting lecture slides before class. Instead, she waits until the week before the exam to upload them so there is no reason for students to bring a laptop to class. “I now ask students to sit in the back if they want to bring their laptop to class so their Internet use is not distracting other students,” 24. According to the text, when students brought laptops to class, they ______ A. got tired of their lessons B. spent less time studying C. were willing to take notes D. increase motivation to study 25. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph2 mean? A. favorable B. negative B. unfair. C. normal. 26. How is Para 3 developed? A. By analyzing causes and results. B. By listing a series of advantages C. By providing a specific example. D. By describing an experimental process. 27. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text? A. To call for the limitation of laptops in class. B. To encourage students to take notes by hand. C. To introduce the benefits of using laptops in class. D. To show the best way to download lecture slides in class. C It’s shocking that countless species become extinct every year and such extinction means forever. To change the situation, scientists are now on their way to bringing back extinct species. DNA is the chemical that carries the structure of a living thing, which is needed by researchers to bring back a species. Dinosaurs have been gone too long for any of their DNA to remain in fossils. However it seems possible to bring back more recently extinct species such as Ice Age animal, the woolly mammoth. In 2015, a team of Spanish and French scientists re-created the Pyrenean ibex, which had gone extinct three years earlier. The new animal didn’t survive long, but scientific advances should improve the success rate. In January, Australian scientists announced that they were trying to restore the brooding frog. That we can bring species back doesn’t mean that we should. There may be benefits to bring back a species. But there’s no way to know how it will turn out. For example, would a passenger pigeon fit into its old habitat? Or might it crowd out existing species? Environmentalists worry that our ability to bring species back might cut down support for the hard work of traditional conservation. Why bother to preserve a wild life habitat or fight poachers(偷猎者) if we know we can make up for our mistakes? But those extinctions are our mistakes to correct. As environmentalist Stewart Brand put it, “Humans have the ability to repair some of that damage.” We would do well to remember the lesson of Jurassic Park: Continue with caution. 28. What can we know from Para 2? A. Scientists have successfully brought back some dinosaurs. B. It’s likely for scientists to bring back recently extinct animals. C. Scientists have discovered DNA of all Ice Age species in fossils. D. Ice Age animals live longer than before after being brought back to life 29. Paragraph 3 mainly shows that bringing back extinct species is ________. A. harmful B. realistic C. helpful D. double-edged 30. What makes environmentalists worried according to the passage? A. Scientists cannot make up for the mistakes they made in DNA research B. Scientists still lack technical support to bring back extinct species to life. C. Traditional conservation seems useless when restoring species is available. D. Species that will be brought back to life after distinction will not survive long. 31. What is the probable attitude of Stewart Brand toward bringing extinct species back to life? A. Critical B. Worried. C. Disapproving. D. Supportive. D One day, a strong tall man broke into Eric’s home, shot and killed her mother in her presence. Nearly scared to death, she screamed and escaped. Then the child hadn't talked about her mother ever since. She just went into silence. The first time she was introduced to my class, I decided to help the silent girl, who apparently had the pain of living without her mother. However hard I tried, day by day, week by week, my efforts seemed to be in vain, as I didn’t seem to get any closer to Eric. Admittedly, my faith was fading away with the cold, boring March days dragging.I felt my heart was broken and ached desperately. I doubted whether this girl was able to come alive. I wondered when it was that she was able to respond to me actively and be aware of the fun, the beauty and the fantastic world around her. Then on a late March day,Judy, one of the school children excitedly claimed that she had seen a beautiful bird in the schoolyard, sign of spring. "Spring's here!"all the children cried delightedly when they flocked to the window to see the bird."Let's make a flower border for the room to welcome spring!" Why not? Anything to lift our spirits is good.We selected colourful papers with brown strips for our baskets.Showing the children how to weave the baskets and how to decorate all the flowers to welcome early spring, I carefully put the beautifully colored papers on Eric’s desk and encouraged her to have a go.Then I spent the next hour sorting out strips of paper at the back of the room while the children were doing their own creating busily. Suddenly Judy came hurrying to me,her face red.“Come and see Eric’s basket. It looks extremely charming!” I held my breath at its beauty, “Eric, it is so fascinating! Tell me how you ever managed it.” She looked up at me with a warm smile, her eyes shining like any normal kid.“My mother was fond of flowers,” she said clearly.“Mother had all kinds of beautiful flowers growing in our garden.” Eric’s basket was placed in the very center of the border at the front of the classroom and remained there until late in June when school was to end.On the last day,Eric was carrying it out of the door carefully when she came running back towards me. She pulled a flower made of red paper from her basket and presented it to me, hugging me gently. I've kept this special gift in my room ever since then. I cherish it because it always reminds me of the power of love and faith. 32.What is the main purpose of the first two paragraphs? A. Describe a frightening crime B. Give a brief introduction of Eric. C. Analyze the cause for Eric’s silence. D. Explain how Eric came to the writer’s class 33. Which is the correct order according to the text? a.
