The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relief (轻松)when we took them off. Yet our uncle’s backpack was half empty. "Why did you give us so many stones?” we asked. "I didn’t. You did." he said. “You didn't know it, but I gave you a little attitude test today. I listened to every word you said. Whenever you were complaining, I added a stone to your backpacks. whenever you talked about something with positive thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks." Our backpacks were full of stones. “Your negative thoughts are just like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones in your backpacks. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind will be.” said our uncle. With great love, our uncle taught us one of the most important lessons in life—the power of the attitude. 24. When my ex-husband and I broke up after 10 years of marriage, our daughter was 5 years old and our son only 3. We decided to see a psychologist about the best way to explain this new situation to the children. She shared with us this special story about a land turtle and a sea turtle, which we then used to help them better comprehend. Once upon a time, a land turtle (Mommy) met a sea turtle (Daddy) close to a beautiful shore. Soon they fell deeply in love and decided to get married. For a time, they continued to live at the water’s edge so that Mommy could sit on the sand and keep dry and warm, while Daddy sat in the shallow water to keep cool. A few years later two baby turtles arrived. They were very special indeed, and looked a little like each of their parents. But as the years went by, Daddy sea turtle started spending more and more time in the ocean as he traveled deeper and deeper to look for pearls. Mommy land turtle also started wandering up into the sands to hunt for food in the woods. Little by little, Daddy and Mommy turtle started to drift apart. Finally one day, Mommy and Daddy turtle decided they didn’t want to live together any more. The little turtles continued to spend time with each of their parents. They made lots of friends with all the fish, dolphins and whales in the ocean and also many friends with the rabbits, deer, and foxes in the woods. In fact they grew up to be a new kind of turtle that could live both in the ocean and on the land. Over the years, this tale of the land and sea turtle has helped my children cope and accept the fact that my marriage to their father was over. They know that we once loved each other very much and that they were born out of true love. 28.When the parents divorce, their children often feel ____. A.Culture B.Parenting C.Career D.Education D Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don't even notice that they're doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of. A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don't keep your legs crossed. Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run. 32.What can we learn about crossing one's legs? A.It is a very bad social habit. B.It can do harm to people's health. C.It is usually practiced deliberately. D.It can make others feel uncomfortable. 33.According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can______. A.affect your blood pressure B.resist gravity effectively C.lead to heart attacks easily D.improve the function of legs 34.In the third paragraph “pins and needles” probably means______. A.being highly flexible B.being a little tired C.serious muscle injuries D.slight sharp pains 35.What is the main purpose of the text? A.To compare common habits. B.To evaluate effects of an experiment. C.To give readers some advice.
