When she was little, her mother always told her that if she didn’t master the flying skills, she would go to hell. She was so curious about hell that she always asked others what hell looked like, but no one was sure, because none of them had ever been there. Some said hell was a place full of water, and others told her that hell was full of burning fire. However, the bird knew they were flying. She wanted to find - 10 - out what hell was. When other birds were learning flying skills, she always hid herself and watched them. She thought in this way she could go to hell and see what hell looked like. However, she spent so little time learning flying skills that one day she was caught by a little boy. The little boy gave her to his grandpa in the countryside as a gift. The old man liked her very much. He made a delicate cage and put her in it. The bird was very worried because she thought she couldn’t find out what hell was like staying in this small cage. However, she couldn’t escape. Day after day, she just stayed in the cage, watching other birds flying. She lost her freedom and she became sadder and sadder. At last, she became ill. The old man finally opened the cage, but she was too weak to fly. Lying on the ground, she thought of the question that she ever asked all the time. “ What does hell look like?” “ Hell is a small well-decorated cage.” Before she closed her eyes forever, she finally answered that question herself. 21. What does the underlined word “ master” in the first paragraph mean? A. Miss B Finish C. Learn well D. Follow 22. Why did the bird hide herself when other birds were learning flying skills? A. Because she was lazy. B. Because she didn’t like learning flying skills. C. Because she thought she didn’t have to learn flying skills. D. Because she thought she could go to hell by doing this. 23. According to the passage, the bird at last found that . A. hell was a place full of burning fire B. hell was a place full of water C. hell was a small well-decorated cage D. there was no hell B Life used to be fun for “teenagers”. They used to have money to spend, and free time to while(消磨) away. They used to wear teenage clothes, and meet in teenage coffee bars and discos. Some of them still do. But for many young people, life is harder now. Jobs are difficult to find. There’s not so much money around. Things are more expensive, and it’s hard to find a place to live in. Teachers say that students work harder than they used to. They are less interested in politics, and more interested in passing exams. They know that good exam results may bring them better jobs. Most young people worry more about money than their parents did twenty years ago. They try to spend less and save more. They want to be able to get homes of their own one day. - 10 - For some, the answer to unemployment is to leave home and look for jobs in one of Britain’s big cities. Every day hundreds of young people arrive in London from other parts of Britain, looking for jobs. Some find jobs, and stay. Others don’t, and go home again, or join the unemployed in London. When you read the newspapers and watch the news on television, it’s easy to get the idea that British young people are all unemployed, angry and in trouble. But that’s not true. Three quarters of them do more or less what their parents did. They do their best at school, find some kinds of jobs in the end, and get married in their early twenties. They get on well with their parents, and enjoy their family life. After all, if they don’t, they won’t be British, will they? 24. What was not the life of young British people in the past? _____. A. They had free time to while away B. They had not much money to spend C. They often met in teenage coffee bars and discos D. They had an easy life 25. Now most young British people _____. A. work harder to spend more money B. are more interested in politics, and less interested in passing exams C. find it hard to find a job D. don’t worry about money 26. From the passage we can infer _____. A. the British economy gets worse B. many young people go to London to look for jobs C. all the people find jobs in London D. more people lose their jobs 27. Which is true according to the passage? _____. A. All the young British people are employed, angry and in trouble B. Most young people live a similar life as their parents C. Most young people get married in their early thirties D. Most young people do the same jobs as their parents C A quarrel at home may result in you falling ill. Don’t laugh, it’s true. Family matters including living habits and even the way we speak have a big effect on our health, doctors say. Wang Xiaoyu, a Senior 2 girl from Xichang, Sichuan Province, fainted (晕倒) in class when she heard her classmates quarrel at the top of their voices. Quarrels between her parents also put the girl into a coma. It is because she is suffering from depression (抑郁症), caused by bad relations at home, doctors explained. - 10 - “We don’t get sick or stay well by ourselves,” says Dr Robert Ferrer from the US. Ferrer shows that family forces may explain up to a quarter of health problems, in his recent research. The genes you get from your family may cause illness. If one of your parents has a heart attack, your risk of being affected may double. But effects on health are not only written in our DNA. Unrelated people who live under the same roof also get similar problems. Diet, lifestyle and environment affect our health, too. Ferrer’s research also found that if teenagers feel they are ignored or unimportant at home they are more likely to get sick. We may never fully understand all the effects that families have on our health. But just as individual (个别的) problems can have effects on others, a small improvement can have big benefits, Ferrer said. 28. Which of the following can best explain why Wang Xiaoyu fainted in class? A. Because of her depression caused by bad family relations. B. Because her parents used to quarrel. C. Because her classmates often quarreled in class. D. Because her classmates shouted loudly at her. 29. According to Dr Ferrer, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. We get sick or stay well by ourselves. B. Only the genes we get from our family have a big effect on our health. C. Our health has nothing to do with diet, lifestyle and environment. D. Teenagers who are ignored at home get sick more easily than those who are not. 30. The underlined word “coma” in Paragraph2 probably means ________. A. surprise B. tiredness C. faint D. sadness 31. The best title for this passage is ________. A. Family relations. B. Family---- another cause to health C. The reasons why we get sick. D. A research about health. D What are you doing right now? Yes, you are reading this page. That also means you’re moving your eyes. You’re thinking. You’re breathing. You’re listening. Possibly you’re shifting(变换) positions. You’re also feeling things---this book, your chair, emotions. What lets you do all these things at the same time? Your brain. Your brain is the control center of your body and mind. Without your brain you can’t do anything. Your brain has more than 100 billion nerve(神经) cells. Each nerve cell makes from 1,000 to 10,000 connections with other nerve cells. The nerve cells send impulses back and forth in your brain and to and from every part of your body. After you reach the age of 20, though, your brain cells start to die. This is common. - 10 - However, if you suffer an illness, or injury, even more nerve cells die in your brain. When a nerve cell dies, the thousands of connections it made with other nerve cells are lost. Until recently, scientists believed that the brain did not replace its dead cells. New studies, however, prove not. Scientists have found new nerve cells in a part of the brain called the hippocampus(海马区). The hippocampus helps the brain form memories from new experiences. The discovery of these new nerve cells is not a cure for anything yet. It gives hope, however, of a cure for brain damage from such things as epilepsy(癫痫病), Lou Gehrig’s disease, car accidents, and strokes. Someday scientists might be able to use the new cells to replace damaged brain cells. Such a cure, however, may take about ten years to develop. So at the same time, use your head---protect it! 32.Nerve cells in the brain______. A. send massages to every part of the body B. make connections only to other cells in the brain C. can cure Lou Gehrig’s disease D. are a person’s memory 33. The last sentence of the passage suggests that people______. A. should use their head by carefully thinking through situations B. should be careful not to injure their brains C. have a skull (头盖骨) that provides all the protection needed by the brain D. would see a quick cure for brain disease 34. The author explains what the hippocampus is by ______. A. telling its history B. comparing it to other parts of the brain C. telling how it got its name D. explaining what it does 35.Nerve impulses are______. A. cures B. disorders C. messages D. memories 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A healthy lifestyle is one that is full of healthy choices and behavior.
