I went to all my classes with no friends. It felt like no one cared. I listened anxiously to all the lessons and waited for lunch break. Then finally the bell rang. It was time to talk and have fun. In the lunch line I met a new friend who wore a hijab (穆斯林女性戴的面纱) on her head, and though I am Jewish, we got along fine, and I was so relieved (如释重负的) when she said, “Sit with us, at our table.” She pointed to the one next to the door. So I agreed, and took my tray (托盘) and was about to walk with her across the floor, when suddenly I heard “Hey, I saw you on the bus, ” said a tall girl in a long skirt. “I see your Jewish star necklace. You should sit with us.” At that moment I looked around, and that's when I noticed, to my surprise, the nations of the world, separating themselves. That's what I saw through my own eyes. The Spanish only sat with the Spanish, the Hindus only with the Hindus, the Russians always with the Russians, and never the Arabs with the Jews. I saw the reason why war gets started. Everyone sticks to their own kind. The_lunchroom_was_a_map_of_the_world. Why was everyone so blind? And so I turned down this girl, and went with the first, and these was no enmity (敌意). I built a bridge between two worlds when I sat with those different from me. 11.Which of the following can best describe the Jewish girl's feelings on her first day at school? A.Interested and happy. B.Frightened and nervous. C.Strange and careless. D.Surprised and excited. 12.We can tell from the story that the tall girl in the long skirt is ________. A.Spanish B.Russian C.Arab D.Jewish 13.From the underlined sentence in Paragraph 8, we can know that ________. A.there is a map of world on the wall of the lunchroom B.the lunchroom was really a map of the world C.the students from different nations sit within their own kind D.the lunchroom was designed to look like a map of the world 14.The purpose of the passage is probably to ________. A.call on more understanding to the Jewish B.introduce an international school for Jewish children C.describe the Jewish girl's new school life D.call on more communication between nations B What are American high schools like? Well, I'm happy to tell you what I know. When I started school here, it had already been a week since the school opened. At this school, freshmen usually go on a trip for about three days at the beginning of school. Unfortunately I missed that wonderful trip, which would have been the best time to get to know my classmates. I was really sad. I wished I'd known about it earlier. Despite the disappointment, however, I gradually adapted to my new life and school. There is a space in the basement of the teaching building where students chat and meet each other. As we do not always have the same classrooms and classmates, the school wants us to get to know each other there. Students usually come to school early, sit in that space and have fun. Around the space, there are many lockers for students to leave their books in, so that students do not have to carry a heavy schoolbag everywhere. It really surprises me that we have almost no textbooks. We only have textbooks for World History and Algebra 2 and they are big and heavy, like bricks. For other classes, we only need binders (活页夹) with paper in them. Without textbooks, students learn things freely and actively. For example, my humanities teacher just teaches us what is in her mind at the time. We never know what we will learn. Another difference between American schools and Chinese schools is that American schools care about students' morality (道德) more than their academic studies. For example, if you do not finish your homework, you will just be asked to do it later, but if you cheat or lie, you will get a warning or even be kicked out. I think that most students here are good at schoolwork as well, but compared to Chinese students, they can make learning a more joyful experience. I think we should take the good points from our two different kinds of education to perfect our approach to studying. 15.What made the writer sad at the beginning? A.Being late for school. B.Not knowing anyone. C.Being looked down upon. D.Missing the chance of the trip. 16.Students go to the basement of the teaching building to ________. A.have a free talk B.attend class C.meet teachers D.share a classroom 17.How did the writer feel when he began his lessons? A.Happy. B.Surprised. C.Unsatisfied. D.Lonely. 18.What might stop a student's schooling in American schools? A.Not studying hard. B.Cheating. C.Not finishing homework. D.Failing in the exam. C In high school I was very shy, content to hang around with my small group of friends and concentrate on my courses. I was quickly regarded as a “brain”. I did so well that by the end of the senior year I had perfect grades and enough credits to give up an entire quarter of coursework. But in early June of the senior year, the principal called me into his office. He asked me to give a speech at graduation. I gaped (目瞪口呆地凝视) at him, my heart thumping. This was the reward for my hard work? I mumbled something and fled the office, blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sure to have ruined my perfect record. I finally agreed to a compromise. I would share the honor with five other students. And my friend Judy would then give her own, fulllength speech. Graduation day soon arrived. I'd been practicing my speech for days, and I had it memorized. The first half hour of the ceremony passed in a blur, and then my moment came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the podium (讲台) without falling down. I faced my classmates. My voice trembled a little, but mostly it was clear and strong. But within seconds, I was done and headed back to my seat. I accomplished something I'd never dreamed of—I spoke in front of hundreds of people. Although I didn't realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the confidence to participate in class at college, to give verbal reports, and to eventually break free from my shyness. I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation ever. But I'm glad I did. I no longer hesitate when I'm faced with the prospect of doing something I dread. I know it may very well turn out to be one of my shining moments. 19.Why was the writer called a “brain”? A.She was a bookworm all the time. B.She was the head of her small group. C.She did a good job in her studies. D.She did more coursework for good grades. 20.What can we infer from the second paragraph? A.She ruined her health because of studying hard. B.She got the reward beyond expectation. C.She was grateful for giving a speech. D.She wasn't good at physics at school. 21.How did the author feel at the beginning of the graduation speech? A.Scared. B.Moved. C.Excited. D.Embarrassed. 22.What did the speech bring to the author at last? A.She had nothing to fear in life. B.She got rid of her sense of shyness. C.She won enough college credits. D.She desired to become a speaker. D After spending 13 years raising three boys, Stephanie Connolly wanted to get back into the workforce, but she was worried that her computer skills were obsolete. Not only was the long employment break a concern, but she had never used Microsoft Office programs. Her last employer had only used WordPerfect. A year later, Connolly is so skilled in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that she is helping others, and has just completed a fixed amount of work as a teaching assistant in a computer class. She's also on the job hunt, armed with a new resume (简历), interview skills, and the latest knowledge of how to conduct Internet job searches, fill out Webbased applications, and upload resumes. “I can walk through the doors of the company and feel very confident. The course instructors have given that to me,” said Connolly, who owed her development to classes offered by the Harvard Allston Workforce Development Collaboration (HAWDC).The collaboration is part of a series of programs, and neighborhood improvements that began with an agreement reached between Harvard University and the city of Boston five years ago. The agreement grew out of discussions between the University and the city over the construction of Harvard's science Complex in Allston. Although the construction paused in 2009, the implementation (实施) of the nonconstructionrelated aspects of the agreement has continued. What has meant to the neighbors is the opening of the Harvard Allston Education Portal, a communitycentered education facility that serves as Harvard's front door to the neighborhood and access to certain University programs and facilities. Information about the agreement's benefits to the community, as well as about Harvard's deep ties with Cambridge and Boston, is available on the new communityoriented Public Affairs website. 23.The underlined word “obsolete” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”. A.out of reach B.out of date C.out of order D.out of danger 24.Which of the following words can best describe Connolly's attitude to the HAWDC? A.Critical. B.Grateful. C.Indifferent. D.Neutral. 25.According to the passage, Harvard Allston Education Portal ________. A.benefits people living in Boston B.raises money from the local people C.is merely accessible to college students D.makes people concerned about the environment 第二节 七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) How to Adjust to a New School School is a base for students, where they learn to succeed. __26__ When you go to a new school, you might worry that you don't know anyone.
