Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth. For example, Koreans have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof of a house so that a magpie (喜鹊) can take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child. This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam. Other countries, though, have tooth customs about other animals. In Mexico and Spain, for example, it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia, it is dogs that take children’s teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed to a dog, so parents in Mongolia will put their children’s fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog. In France and the USA, a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know. It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies; however, in the United States, she may leave money. 21.Koreans throw a tooth onto the roof of a house in order to __________. A. get money B. feed magpies C. get a new tooth D. get candies 22.In Vietnam, if a child’s tooth falls out, he or she will __________. A. feed it to a mouse B. throw it onto the roof of a house C. put it in a piece of meat and feed the meat to a dog D. leave it to the Tooth Fairy 23.From the last paragraph, we can know that in France and the USA _________. A. a child will put his or her fallen tooth beside the pillow B. the Tooth Fairy takes the fallen teeth away at midnight C. the Tooth Fairy will leave some candies to the children after taking the fallen teeth away D. no one knows for sure what the Tooth Fairy will leave to the children after taking the fallen teeth away 24.The passage is mainly about ___________. A. customs about fallen teeth in western countries B. customs about fallen teeth in different countries C. stories about human teeth D. stories about some animals B When the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of cliff( 悬崖) and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea. Her owner Mike Holden panicked and called the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds . Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search. Three days later, a hurricane hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country. For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken. Then, one day, the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holder if he would like his dog back. A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting desperately on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy. The dog had initially been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)but had survived by drinking water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said , “It was a very dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added. It was ,as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”. 25. The dog Jody fell down the cliff when she was __________. A. rescuing her owner B. running after a sheep C. blocked by a rock D. caught in a hurricane26. Who spotted Judy after the accident? A. Six volunteers B. A student from Leeds C. A birdwatcher D. D. Holden cared little where Judy was buried. 28. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Coming Back from the Dead. B. Surviving a Hurricane. C. Dangers in the Wild D. Miracle of the Coastguard. C Monthly Talks at London Canal Museum Our monthly talks start at 19:30 on the first Thursday of each month except August. Liz Payne D Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be game of some kind football, hockey, golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering(登山). Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their relaxation. Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore (忽略), but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities. A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier (滑雪者) is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment. 32. The main difference between a sport and a game lies in ______. A. activity B. rules C. uniform D. skills 33. Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ______. A. mountaineers depend on each other while climbing B. teams compete against each other C. it is an Olympic event D. there are five climbers on each team 34. Mountaineers compete against ______. A. each other B. other teams C. nature D. international standards 35. Which of the following might be the best title? A. How to Climb High Mountains B. Mountain Climbers C. Challenging Sports Activities D. Mountaineering 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Does this situation seem familiar to you?
