Consider these things to remember when you’re having a bad day. No one promised life would be perfect. If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content. Don’t condition your happiness on meeting every expectation you set for yourself. It is good to be ambitious, but you’ll never be perfect. If you expect otherwise, your life will be filled with disappointments. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit. Don’t kid yourself into thinking success will come quickly. It isn’t easy to be patient, but anything worth doing requires time. If you get frustrated, remind yourself why your goal is important. There is a lesson in every struggle. And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through or how you managed to survive. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about. Don’t complain about how terrible your life is. If you search for the lesson in your present struggle, you’ll be able to make positive changes that would prevent similar situations in the future. Without hard times, you wouldn’t appreciate the good ones. Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to give in, that is strength. It is hard to find much to smile about when you fail, but how else would you improve yourself? If you look at failure as a part of your evolutionary process, you’ll stay positive and pursue your goals for as long as it takes. 24. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Success will come quickly. B. Success calls for patience. C. Hard work leads to success. D. Confidence is the first step to success. 25. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that ____________. A. lessons from struggles make us stronger B. all things are difficult before they are easy C. we should forget how we managed to survive D. similar situations in the future will never appear 26. What can we infer from Paragraph 5? A. Hard times make us lose heart and be short of courage. B. Smiles when you fail will not help to improve yourself. C. Perseverance in time of hardships develops our strengths. D. We should try to avoid failures in the evolutionary process. 27. Which of the following is the best title of this passage? A. Life is not perfect. B. Struggle leads to success. C. Success won’t come quickly. D. Things to remember in hard times. C It’s common for children to grow up being told to minimize daydreaming, and instead to focus on lessons and class work. Historically, daydreaming students who go off on their own thoughts, rather than focusing on the teachers, the blackboard or their class work, are often encouraged to stop allowing their attention to wander and to bring themselves back into the present moment. They’re described as uninterested in schoolwork and their future. Traditionally, daydreaming is seen as a practice that results in bad consequences. But recent studies are beginning to renounce those common beliefs by pointing out the potential benefits that daydreaming may provide. PsychCentral reports that Mary Smith, psychological scientist and researcher, recently examined scientific writings and studies to gain a better understanding of the role of a reflective brain. These studies have shown that the brain has a network that is active when a person is daydreaming and that brain network can help fuel memory and learning. Though paying attention in school is important, these results suggest that there should be time for students to daydream, too. Giving them the opportunity to reflect and daydream can help improve learning and development. Research also indicates that when students are permitted to daydream, they experience less anxiety and become more motivated. On the other hand, if students are cautioned against daydreaming, their knowledge of themselves and the world around them may suffer.[学&科&] As a result, educators are encouraged to promote a balance between outward and inward attention. A little bit of daydreaming to break up the hard focus on school activities can be beneficial, and it may help students become better, active learners. As for students, the lesson here is not to be afraid of doing some daydreaming. Sure, you want to pay attention to the vital information conveyed to you during your classes, but don’t get discouraged if your mind wanders. A little bit of daydreaming is healthy. 28. What do people usually think of daydreaming students? A. They live in the future instead of in the moment. B. They pay too much attention to their own thoughts. C. They care about neither their studies nor their future. D. They go off on their own thoughts to avoid bad results. 29. The underlined word “renounce” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “____________”. A. tolerate B. abandon C. confirm D. support 30. If students are prohibited from daydreaming, they will ____________. A. become more anxious. B. enjoy more calmness. C. get more motivation. D. know better about themselves. 31. What can be the best title for the text? A. Daydreaming? The More, the Better. B. Daydreaming? Not Too Bad![] C. Causes of Daydreaming D. Attitudes towards Daydreaming D Last week, two companies, Kitty Hawk and Uber, announced their plans to bring flying cars to reality very soon. Imagine never having to worry about traffic, stop lights, or road construction. A flying car would get to a place much faster than one travelling by road. On the other hand, imagine having to avoid drones (无人驾驶飞机) and other flying cars. Also, what if your battery dies when you are in the air? And, how will you know where to land? Kitty Hawk is a start-up tech company supported by Google co-founder, Larry Page. According to the Kitty Hawk website, its car will be able to travel at speeds up to 40 kilometers an hour in the air. It says under US aviation law such a machine “does not require registration or a pilot’s license and may be flown in uncongested (不拥挤的) areas for recreational purposes.” As of now, the car can only be flown over fresh water. Kitty Hawk is making a list of people interested in buying the flying car. They must pay a deposit of US$100. Those who get their names on the list early will receive US$2, 000 off the final cost of the car. However, Kitty Hawk has not yet announced the price. Kitty Hawk expects its first flying cars will go on sale by the end of this year. At a conference last week, Uber announced plans for flying taxis to begin carrying passengers. Unlike the Kitty Hawk company, Uber does not plan to build its flying cars. Instead, it will use the resources of partner companies. Like the Kitty Hawk car, Uber flying taxis will use electric power. Uber says its flying taxis could travel up to 241 kilometers an hour. The company said that could reduce the travel time between San Francisco and San Jose, California from two hours on the road to 15 minutes in the air. Riders could use the Uber app to book a flying taxi to take them to their destinations. The company has not yet said how costly air taxi travel would be compared to road taxi travel. 32. What could the main problems for flying cars be? A. There is not enough space for them to land. B. Sky transportation would cause more traffic jams. C. They travel much more slowly than travelling by road. D. They may hit other flying cars or have a dead battery in the sky. 33. According to the passage, the pilots of flying cars ____________. A. must be professional pilots B. are required to fly in crowded space C. are not required to have a pilot’s license D. are not only allowed to fly in urgent situations 34. What is Kitty Hawk doing to attract customers? A. Reducing the price for all customers. B. Giving rewards to those visiting its website. C. Advertising its first flying cars on public media. D. Offering is a discount to those paying a deposit early. 35. What is the difference between Uber and Kitty Hawk in the flying car market? A. Uber’s flying taxis will use electric power. B. Uber intends to build its flying cars to fly very fast. C. The trips made by Uber’s flying taxis are much cheaper than road taxis. D. Uber prefers to use the resources of partners rather than build its flying cars. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Public Speaking and Critical Thinking What is critical thinking? To a certain degree,it’s a matter of logic — of being able to spot weaknesses in other people’s arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence. In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking — the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. 36 . The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too, is critical thinking. 37 . As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (机械的) exercise, it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If, on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too. Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. 38 . What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking. 39 . As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will approve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 40 . As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations. If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece. A. Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves. B. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it. C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. D. It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas. E. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot. F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways. G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well. I questioned Mrs. Faccenda’s ability to teach students. However, psychologists argue that the over-reliance on their 62 (phone) can make people unable to sit with uncertainty. They consider 63 as a “safety seeking behavior” which reduces anxiety in the moment. But over time, safety behaviours actually feed anxiety 64 they prevent people from realising their fear has no basis once the situation has actually unfolded, or that it is something they’re able to cope with.
