Harley’s father was able to rescue his two youngest daughters and save their lives, but Harley was severely burned on 80 percent of her body and her parents were told that she was likely to pass away. Over the next several months, Harley would put up with surgery after surgery and remain hooked up to a ventilator(呼吸机)at the hospital. When she was finally released to go home, Harley had no idea that the toughest battle had not even begun yet. When Harley started school just a few years later, she realized for the first time how cruel her peers could be. Bullied for her appearance and called hateful names, she began to consider ending her life while only in Grade 8. When her friends were getting their first boyfriends and going on their first dates, she was sitting at home wondering if she should end her life. But in 2013, something changed. It was not something on the outside but something inside Harley. She made the conscious decision to become more like the carefree, laughing, joyous little girl that she had not seen since that night in 1997. So for the first time in her life, she put on a blue dress and walked outside into the light of day throwing caution to the wind and daring anyone to try to rain on her parade. 5. A girl rose from the dark C One form of social prejudice against older people is the belief that they cannot understand or use modern technology. Activities like playing computer games, going on the Net and downloading MP3s are only for the youngsters. Isn’t it unfair that older people enjoying a computer game should be frowned(皱眉) upon by their children and grandchildren? Nowadays older people have more control over their lives and they play a full part in society. Moreover, better health care has left more people in their sixties and seventies feeling fit and active after retirement. Mental activity, as well as physical exercise, can contribute to better health. Playing computer games is a very effective way of exercising the brain. When personal computers were first introduced, most older people didn’t believe they would ever familiarize themselves with it. Now computers have been around for a few generations and retired people have gradually become more relaxed about using them for fun. Gamers over 65 prefer playing puzzle games and card games. Kate Stevens, aged 72, says: “I find it very relaxing. It’s not very demanding, but you still need to concentrate. ” Another development that has favored “grey games” is a change in the type of videogames available on the market. There’s a greater variety of games to choose from, including more intellectual and complex strategy(策略) and simulation(模拟) games. Internet Chess and Train Simulator are among the most popular of these. Train Simulator is based on real-world rail activities. Players can choose from a variety of challenges, such as keeping to a strict-timetable and using helper engines during a winter storm. Some people argue that “grey gamers” simply don’t have the skills required for computer games, and that teenagers are better. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Most computer games require the kind of analytical thinking that improves with practice, which means that the “grey gamers” may well be far better than gamers half a century younger than them. In games where speed is the main consideration, older people would be at a disadvantage because they may have slower reaction times. On the other hand, “grey gamers” have a preference for slower paced, mind challenging games. 8. The second paragraph is intended to . A. show the best way to exercise the brain B. stress the importance of good health C. explain why grey gamers exist D. teach how to play videogames 9. What was older people’s attitude towards personal computers at first ? A. Doubtful B. Concerned C. Enthusiastic D. Supportive 10. The method the author uses to develop Paragraph 4 is . A. offering analyses B. giving examples C. making comparisons D. providing details 11. By saying “This couldn’t be further from the truth.” in Paragraph 5, the author means . A. mind challenging games are not suitable for older people B. children should improve their skills with practice C. playing computer games requires analytical thinking D. older people can perform well in some computer games D Men are spending more and more time in the kitchen encouraged by celebrity (名人) chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver, according to a report from Oxford University. The effect of the celebrity role models, who have given cooking a more manly picture, has combined with a more general drive towards sexual equality and men now spend more than twice the amount of time preparing meals than they did in 1961. According to the research by Prof. Jonatahn Gershuny, who runs the Centre for Time Research at Oxford, men now spend more than half an hour a day cooking, up from just 12 minutes a day in 1961. Prof. Gershuny said. “The man in the kitchen is part of a much wider social trend. There has been 40 years of sexual equality, but there is another 40 years probably to come.” Women, who a generation ago spent nearly two hours a day cooking, now spend just one hour and seven minutes — a great fall, but they still spend far more time in the kitchen than men. Some experts have named these men in aprons(围裙) as “Gastrosexuals (men using cooking skills to impress friends)”, who have been inspired to pick up a kitchen knife by the success of Ramsay,Oliver as well as other male celebrity chefs such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Marco Pierre White and Keith Floyd. “I was married in 1974. When my father came to visit me a few weeks later, I was wearing an apron when I opened the door. He laughed,” said Prof. Gershuny. “That would never happen now.” Two-thirds of adults say that they come together to share at least three times a week, even if it is not necessarily around a kitchen or dining room table. Prof. Gershuny pointed out that the family meal was now rarely eaten by all of its members around a table — with many “family meals” in fact taken on the sofa in the sitting room, and shared by family members. “The family meal has changed a lot, and few of us eat — as I did when I was a child — at least two meals a day together as a family. But it has survived in a different format.” 12. What is one reason behind the trend that men spend more time cooking than before? A. The improvement of cooks’ status. B. The influence of popular female chefs. C. The change of female’ s view on cooking. D. The development of sexual equality campaign. 13. What does the author think about the time men and women spend on cooking? A. Men spend more time cooking than women nowadays. B. Women spend much less time on cooking than before. C. It will take 40 years before men spend more time at the stove than women. D. There is a sharp fall in the time men spend on cooking compared with 1961. 14. How did Prof. Gershuny see the family meal according to the passage? A. It has become a thing of the past. B. It is very different from what it used to be. C. It shouldn’t be advised in modern times. D. It is beneficial to the stability(稳定) of the family. 15. Which is the best title for the passage? A. The Changes of Family Meals B. Equality between Men and Women C. Cooking into a New Trend for Men D. Cooking — a Thing of the Past for Women 阅读理解:第二节(共5小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Best Ways to Offer Support and Encouragement Whether it is a friend, family member, or coworker, at some time or another somebody will need support and encouragement. This could be the result of a disappointing change in life, a health change or other similar challenges. 16 Even if you do not think that you have the ability to offer the proper support and encouragement, your willingness to be there and to listen may be enough. Each situation is different, and each would require different levels of both support and encouragement. 17 Helping keep up someone's spirits when they are feeling helpless just by letting them know you are there, can make a serious difference in their lives. 18 For people in this situation, often a telephone call, or dropping in to say “hello” is more than enough. You may not feel that you are doing much of anything, but to the person who is feeling isolated the effort you take to stop and see them,or call them can make a big difference. For someone who has recently lost a job,you may be able to offer support by helping them network effectively. Or, you may be able to help them craft a new resume, apply for benefits,or a number of other “small” things that may seem insignificant to you, but to them can be a very significant event. 19 However,if you let them know that you are there for them, and make it a point to check in with them regularly, they may soon feel more comfortable and share them with you. Take for example a person who is suffering with depression. 20 They may not be willing to admit that there is something wrong. However,if you trust your instincts(直觉) and take a little extra care to support and encourage them even in little ways, you can make a huge difference in their overall outlook. A. You know that there is something wrong. B. All too often, people feel isolated and do not know where to turn. C. So you may need support and encouragement to pull through. D. You may not always understand all of the issues going on in someone's life. E. In such cases,it is natural for you to reach out and offer your support and encouragement. F. You know better than anyone the best ways to support and encourage someone who is going through a difficult time. G. The support you offer could be as simple as helping with simple household tasks, running errands(跑腿儿),or even being available for telephone calls. 完型填空:共两节(每题1.5分,共60分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 (A) A mother and daughter living in my community are two of the most unfriendly people I have ever come across in my life. Sheep and goats are 51 hill and mountain animals. Running and skipping exercise young legs and develop a strong sense of 52 that will keep them safe on the steepest rocks. 53 animals, play is not so different for humans. 54 trees and catching flies are not the most obvious training for the adult world, but the flexibility 55 in these activities is similar to that required of a bus driver or businessman.
