As its nickname implies—Farang is Thai for foreigners—you'll find a large concentration of backpackers here. Still, with only a couple of simple food shops, it's a far cry from the noises of Chaweng beach on Koh Samui or Kamala on Phuket, which makes it to be one of the top tourist destinations. Rent a sea kayak(皮划艇)(100 baht, which is around£2 an hour) and go around the corner to Tham Morakot (the Emerald Cave), a winding cave that opens up to a bay walled by thick leaves and often visited by groups of monkeys. It is very inspiring, but to fully appreciate it, be sure to prepare a light to avoid knocking into cave walls and other kayaks. To avoid being crowded, make the trip in the late afternoon. Where to eat The Ko Yao Viewpoint Hotel is the best place for tourists. Drink the sweet cocktails in favor of an icy Chang beer and sit in the last rays of the day. Where to stay Cheaper hotels of comparable quality are set slightly back in the forest, but if you want beachfront access, it's worth choosing one of the basic hotels at Koh Mook Charlie Beach Resort (bungalows from£32). Getting there Fly from Bangkok to Trang with Air Asia (from£30),then take a one-hour Tigerline ship from Hat Yao Pier (£19). Besides, a five-hour ship from Phuket at Rassada Pier (£41) goes directly to the island and will drop passengers at Haad Farang. For more information and service, please click here. 21. Which of the following is the advantage of the hotels back in the forest? A. They are near the sea. B. They are not expensive. C. It's very quiet there. D. It's of high quality there. 23. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. Travel magazines B. Newspapers C. Internet D. Travel Agency notes B It was a Friday morning, 7:30a.m. I felt too lazy to drive my car so I asked my son to book a taxi. In five minutes, the taxi reached the entrance gate, waiting for my arrival. I just saw the car number and entered inside the car. I was so busy that I didn’t pay any attention to the driver. I was searching for an important paper from my bag, so I said, “Please, go quick! I’m in a hurry!” The voice came, “Yes, Ma’ am!” I was surprised when I heard a female voice! I stopped my work for a second and looked at the drive. The driver was a young lady. Maybe, around thirty or thirty-two! For the first time, I saw a lady driving a taxi! Hundred times, I had traveled in a taxi, but I never saw any lady driving a taxi, I didn’t know why I became so enthusiastic about knowing why she had chosen this profession. So I started the conversation, “If you don’t mind, can I ask you some questions?” “Yes, ma’am! No problem.” “I guess, you are well qualified!” “Yes, ma’am. I have completed my education. I have done my MBA course.” “Oh, my God! Why did you then choose this profession, instead of going for an academic career?” She smiled and the way she expressed her views made me amazed! Very politely, she said “Driving was my passion(热情)from my childhood, ma’am! Of course I do respect each and every job. In this case, at least I fulfill my desire! I love driving! I don’t mind for a big or small job. I want a job where I can get satisfaction. I get offers from M.N.C but I prefer this one because I like it! I know, I can’t get enough money out of it, yet as I tell you ‘I love driving!’ That’s it.” 24. Why did the author take a taxi to work that Friday morning? A. Because her son didn’t want her to drive. B. Because she was too lazy to drive her car. C. Because she had to travel a long distance. D. Because she had to go to work in a hurry. 25. For what purpose did the author start to talk to the driver? A. To give some advice on how to drive safely. B. To learn some driving skills from the taxi driver C. To know why she chose a driver as her profession. D. To ask the driver something about the MBA course. 26. What can we know about the female driver? A. She was well-educated. B. Her service wan not good. C. She didn’t finish her MBA course. D. She was surprised to see the author. 27. What attitude do the author probably keep to the female driver? A. objective B. favorable C. neutral D. not mentioned C Intelligent people are more likely to trust others, while those who score lower on measures of intelligence are less likely to do so. Oxford University researchers based their finding on an analysis of the 'General Social Survey'. The authors say one explanation could be that more intelligent individuals are better at judging characters and may spend more time building relationships with people they can trust. Another reason could be that smarter people are better at weighing up situations and assessing whether or not the other person will hold up his or her end of a bargain. “Intelligence is shown to be linked with trusting others.” said the study's lead author, Noah Carl of Oxford University,“ This finding supports what other researchers have argued, namely that being a good judge of character is a distinct part of human intelligence.” In addition, the study shows that individuals who are more trusting are also happier with their lives and had higher levels of physical health. The Oxford researchers found, however, that the links between trust and health, and between trust and happiness, are not explained by intelligence. The findings confirmed that trust is a valuable resource for an individual, and is not simply a measure of intelligence. The authors say the research is significant because the study of social trust could have far-reaching implications in public welfare, as social trust contributes to the success of important social institutions, such as welfare systems and financial markets. According to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, trust is in increasingly short supply in current generation. This decline threatens world leaders’ ability to handle some of today's key challenges like global warming, and the political system. There are good reasons to think that governments should try to develop more trust in society. Distrust usually causes friction in personal relationships, careers and politics among others, says Stephen Covey. Although majority of people say that trust can never be restored once it's broken, Stephen feels it can be brought back. "It's not easy, it takes time, but you do it through your behavior, not just things you say." 28. It can be concluded from the analysis of the General Social Survey that . A. intelligent people tend to show more trust in others B. judgment of characters determines the level of intelligence C. intelligence accounts for the connection between trust and health D. intelligent individuals spend less time on interpersonal relationship 29. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Make the best of a situation. B. Stick to one's promise as agreed. C. Figure out the true value of a bargain. D. Make an assessment of a deal. 30. According to the research, higher level of social trust is . A. an important basis for stable political system B. a basic step to deal with global warming C. a contributing factor to successful public institutions D. a complete solution to interpersonal conflicts 31. When it comes to rebuilding trust, Stephen is most likely to agree that . A. actions always speak louder than words B. behavior is a mirror in which everyone shows his image C. behavior is largely determined by mind D. action is the proper fruit of knowledge D From fast food cooks to doormen at restaurants and hotels, robots are slowly entering the workforce in nearly every industry. Most recently, the world welcomed its first operational robot policeman. “Robocop”, the newest member of the Dubai police force, made the first public appearance on Sunday at the Fourth Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference, where it greeted guests. At about 70 inches tall and weighing nearly 220 pounds, Robocop seeks to engage with residents and tourists. Featuring an “emotion detector(探测器)”, the robot can recognize a person’s gestures and body language from about 5 feet away. Robocop’s skills don’t stop there—the emotionally intelligent robot can detect if a person is happy, sad and even angry by studying his or her facial expression. And just like your human friends would do, if Robocop sees you’re unhappy, it will try to lift your spirits. More importantly, when it comes to fighting crime, the robot uses the Internet, artificial intelligence and other smart technologies to spot offenders using facial recognition. Its navigation(导航)skills grant it the ability to map out areas and travel on its own. Equipped with a built-in tablet, Robocop can communicate with people, speak six languages, respond to public inquiries, shake hands and even make military salutes. “With the aim to assist people on the streets,” said Brigadier-General Khalid Nasser A1 Razzouqi, director-general of smart services at Dubai Police, “the Robocop is the latest smart addition to the force and has been designed to help us fight crime recently, keep the city safe and improve happiness levels.” 32. According to the text, Robocop can . A. use body language B. make people happy C. cook fast food D. ask questions in public 33. What is the key part when Robocop makes a traveling route? A. Its navigation skills. B. Its built-in tablet. C. Its emotion detector. D. Its own ability to travel. 34. Robocop is designed with the original intention of .
