We think of it as a candy, but once it was a medicine. Today, chocolate can be a hot drink, a frozen dessert, or just a snack. Sometimes it’s an ingredient(构成部分) in the main course of a meal. Mexicans make a hot chocolate sauce called mole and pour it over chicken. The Mexicans also eat chocolate with spices like chili peppers. Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys say“Ugh!”and run away. Workers must first dry and then roast the beans. This removes the bitter taste. The word “chocolate” comes from a Mayan word. The Mayas were an ancient people who once lived in Mexico. They valued the cacao tree. Some used the beans for money, while others crushed them to make a drink. When the Spaniards came to Mexico in the sixteenth century, they started drinking cacao too. Because the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. No one had the idea of adding sugar. The Spaniards took some beans back to Europe and opened cafes. Wealthy people drank cacao and said it was good for the digestion. In the 1800s, the owner of a chocolate factory in England discovered that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao. It quickly became a cheap and popular drink. Soon afterwards, a factory made the first solid block of sweetened chocolate. Later on, another factory mixed milk and chocolate together. People liked the taste of milk chocolate even better. Besides the chocolate candy bar, one of the most popular American snacks is the chocolate chip cookie. Favorite desserts are chocolate cream pie and, of course, an ice cream sundae with hot fudge sauce. 24. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Nobody had the idea of adding sugar until the sixteenth century. B. The word“chocolate”comes from a Mexican word. C. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys like them. D. Workers must dry and roast the beans to remove the bitter taste. 25. The Spaniards think that cacao was a medicine because________. Mexicans like chocolate very much C. chocolate is a product of the cacao tree D. people liked the taste of chocolate mixed with milk C Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not. A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (纹身) and nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can't judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept. Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees, because those people represent the companies to their customers. As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can't expect all our customers are. There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal. 28. Which of the following is the newspaper editor's opinion according to Paragraph 2? A.People's appearances carry messages about themselves. B.Customers' choices influence dress standards in companies. C.Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly treated. D.Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace. 29. What can be inferred from the text? A.Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview. B.What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies. C.Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates. D.Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates. 30. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Employees Matter B.Personal Choices Matter C.Appearances Matter D.Hiring Managers Matter 31. The author's attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as ____. A.enthusiastic B.negative C.positive D.sympathetic D Robots will have taken over most jobs within 30 years leaving humanity facing its “biggest challenge ever” to find meaning in life when work is no longer necessary, according to experts. Professor Moshe Vardi, of Rice University, in the US, says that many middle-class professionals will be assisting the work of machines within the next few decades leaving workers with more leisure (休闲) time than they have ever experienced. Prof Vardi said the rise of robots could lead to unemployment rates greater than 50 percent. “We are approaching a time when machines will be able to do better than humans at almost any task,” said Vardi, a professor in computational engineering. “Robots are doing more and more jobs that people used to do. I believe that society needs to face this question before it's upon us: If machines can do almost any work humans can do, what will humans do? The question I want to put forward is, ‘Does the technology we are developing finally benefit mankind?'” Prof Vardi said existing robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies were already getting rid of a growing number of middle-class jobs and that pace of advancement in the field is increasing. But Prof Vardi is not sure that a workforce of humanlike robots will be good for mankind. “A typical answer is that if machines will do all our work, we will be free to pursue (追求) leisure activities,” he said, “I do not find this a promising future, as I do not find the idea of leisure-only life appealing. I believe that work is essential to human well-being. Humanity is about to face perhaps its greatest challenge ever, which is finding meaning in life. “We need to rise to the occasion and meet this challenge before human labor becomes out of date. What's different this time is computer scientists are working on building machines that can do everything we can do, only better. If machines can do all the work or even 50 percent of the jobs that we used to do, what will people do?” 32. What does Professor Moshe Vardi say about future human jobs? A. They will be more challenging. B. Most will disappear completely. C. Most will be replaced by robots. D. They will require higher degrees. 33. What is Prof Vardi concerned about? A. The rapid population growth. B. The fast development of robots. C. Whether robots will rule humans. D. Whether robots will do good to humans. 34. How does Prof Vardi find leisure-only life? A. Ideal. B. Undesirable. C. Carefree. D. Interesting. 35. What will humans face in the next few decades? A. Labor shortage. B. Production surplus. C. Fierce competition. D. It is human behavior which is to blame. Industrial and agriculture waste such as chemicals and oil is poured into the ocean. What’s the worse, over fishing destroys the balance of life in the ocean. To handle this situation, the government should make laws but punish those who break the law. Besides, over fishing should be strict banned. Also, many fisherman can take other jobs so that there have less people living on fishing. Only by taking these measures we eventually preserve fishing resources. Dear Michael, __________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 参考答案 A 21. A 计算题。 Step 2. Send us $60 application fee after receiving our email confirmation.和Step 2. Send us $ 310, including $60 application fee and $ 250 internship placement deposit,可知Chinese Language Programs的申请费用是60,Chinese Business Internship (实习)Program的申请费用也是60(另外的250的定金)。 故A正确。 22. Arrange final payment transfer after receiving our second confirmation中的second confirmation可知最少是要确认两次。故C正确。 23. B 推理题。根据How to apply for our programs可知本文是告诉国外的学生如何申请到学习中文有关的课程,是针对国外的学生的。故B正确。 B 24. A选项错在时间的表述上,应为in the 1800s; B选项错在a Mexican word, 应为 a Mayan word;C选项应为:The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys don’t like them. Because the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. 根据“...people do‘cover’themselves in order to convey certain messages.” enthusiastic “热心的”;negative“消极的,否定的”;positive“积极的,肯定的”;sympathetic“同情的”。 D 32. C。 由第六段中的‘Does the technology we are developing finally benefit mankind?' But Prof Vardi is not sure that a workforce of humanlike robots will be good for mankind可知,Vardi教授担心人类发明的技术是否最终会让人类受益。 34. B。 I do not find this a promising future, as I do not find the idea of leisure-only life appealing可知,Vardi教授并不觉得只有休闲的生活吸引人。 35. D。 Humanity is about to face perhaps its greatest challenge ever, which is finding meaning in life以及最后一段中的If machines can do all the work or even 50 percent of the jobs that we used to do, what will people do? light “光线”;shade“阴影”;sand“沙子”。 surprised“吃惊的”;puzzled“疑惑不解的”;worried“担心的”。 50.C解析:联系上一段中的“he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock”可知,泥球里包有(contained)宝石。 invent“发明”;accept“接受”;keep“保存”。 except for“除了”;according to“根据”;judging from“由…… 59.B解析:结合上文中的“But we have not the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person.” present“礼物”;habit“习惯”;history“历史”。 1—5 CABAB 6—10 BBCAB 11—15 AABCA 16—20 BBBCA 21—25 ACBDA 26—30 CBCBC 31—35 BCDBD 36—40 EAFGC 41---45 DBCAB 46---50 DCADC 51---55 BADCB 56---60 ADCBA 语法填空: 61. to be awarded 62. announcement 63. responded 64. proud 65. whether 66. I know you’re always interested in traditional Chinese culture, so I’m writing to tell you one of my recent experiences. I visited the Palace Museum during the new-year vacation together with my classmates and explored Chinese history and culture. The site, also known as the Forbidden City, is in the heart of the capital and covers approximately 150, 000 square metres. We chose it as our destination because it houses a variety of exhibits, like paintings, antiques, crafts and so on. More importantly, it was home to 24 Ming and Qing emperors for 500 years. The architecture of the museum features the combination of traditional beauty and magnificence. The visit is indeed worthwhile. I’m amazed at the wisdom of Chinese people and impressed by the brilliance of Chinese civilization. Feel an itch for the visit? I’d like to show you around the museum. Waiting for your coming!
