Regional School Unit 13 Superintendent (负责人) Lew Collins said during the school’s Thursday night meeting that the schedule for the schools will be changed. Oceanside East and West will start a half hour later, at 8 a.m. for their new school year. Research has shown that teenagers’ brains are often not fully awake at 6:30 a.m. Collins said the schedule, which is used to get students to school for classes that begin at 7:30 a.m., calls for some to get on buses before 6 a.m. to get to school on time. Teachers are having meetings at 6:40 a.m., which is too early, he thinks. Collins visited the high schools in Rockland and asked students when they would like classes to begin. Most of them said 8:00 a.m. “I was surprised. I thought they would have said 9:00 or 10:00,” he said. The National Sleep Foundation says on its website that teenagers’ biological clocks (生物钟) are designed to stay up later and get up later. The Foundation called for schools to change their schedules, which means a later start as well for elementary students (小学生). We do not have enough buses to run, since all the high school and elementary school buses run almost at the same time, Collins said. He suggested, “We should buy six more buses and get six more drivers to keep the new schedule working.” Elementary school classes in Rockland now start at 8:30 a.m., but will be moved to 8:45 a.m., starting in the autumn. “I know this is a problem for working parents, but we will see what we can come up with,” said Jane Brown, a teacher at Bardonia Elementary School. “Anyway, I believe if students get more sleep they’ll be more ready to learn when classes start,” she added. 25. A new schedule will be made to _____. A. add more interesting subjects B. help students do better in class C. ask parents to learn about schools D. cut the number of meetings down 26. One of the problems facing the schools in Rockland is that they will _____. A. be afraid of working parents’ disturbance(打扰) B. be worried about children’s safety C. be short of school buses D. be short of teachers 27. What does Jane Brown think of the new schedule? A. She is not certain about it. B. She is not interested in it. C. She is worried about it. D. She is hopeful about it. C American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English. First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know”. Or they may say “Whaddaya say?” instead of “What do you say?” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate. Sound is not the only difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries. Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England,if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”.In America, you “give them a call”.When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.” There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook?” All these differences can be confusing if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French, but their French is very different from the French of France. 28. What does the author think of the differences between American and British English? A. American and British English is the same language. B. American and British English are quite different. C. Although American English came from the British English, there are still some important differences. D. There are few differences between American and British English. 29. What does the underlined word “separately” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Together. B. One by one. C. In common. D. In different ways. 30. What does the underlined sentence “The same thing is true of some British words in America.” mean? A. The words of American and British English are the same. B. The spelling of American and British English is the same. C. Although they don’t sound the same, the words are the same. D. Some British English words are not used in American English. 31. How many ways are talked about the differences between American and British English in the passage? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. D To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different. Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers — only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway, “You do not need to say to a threeyearold, ‘Go to explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!” Says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing! The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff(员工) have one vote(投票) each — even the fouryearolds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more. When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist. 32. What is the main topic of the article? A. An unusual school. B. Children’s hobbies. C. A school without rules. D. Education in the US. 33. What does the school believe? A. Teachers cannot teach children well. B. Children learn best when they do what they want to do. C. Learning is for adults — children should only play. D. Children should only learn about one thing at a time. 34. What does Daniel Greenberg say about threeyearolds? A. They love learning. B. They are very naughty. C. They want to be outside all the time. D. They are too young to learn anything. 35. Who has the most power in the school meetings? A. The older children have more power than the younger children. B. A child has more power than an adult. C. The younger children have more power than the older children. D. Everybody has the same power. E Speaking to Develop Self-confidence Overcoming stage fright Most people are nervous about public speaking. 36 If you know that your topic is interesting, and that your material is well organized, you have already reduced a major worry. Facial expressions 37 During your speech try to change your facial expressions to convey the emotions that you feel. Throughout your speech you need to use expressive facial expressions. Eye contact When you speak, you should look your audience straight in the eye. The idea is to give the impression that you are talking to each individual in your audience. If you have a large audience, try to look at people in the middle of the room, then slowly look to the right side of the room, then to the left side, then back to the center of the room. 38 This will give the audience the idea that you are not interested in your topic or in them. 39 Enthusiasm is being lively and showing your own personal concern for your subject and your audience. If you are truly interested in your topic, your delivery is certain to be enthusiastic and lively. Varying speaking rate Your words should not be too fast or too slow. If you speak too slowly you will bore your audience. If you speak too rapidly you will be difficult to understand. Adapt your rate to the content of your speech. For example, if you are explaining complex information, slow down. 40 A. If you are nervous , take a few steps to your right or left while speaking. B. Smiling before you start your speech shows that you are not nervous. C. The best way to cope with nervousness is to be really well prepared. D. If you are happy or enthusiastic, you should speed up. E. Don’t look at the floor, the ceiling or out the window. F. Speaking with enthusiasm G.
