Curious-looking Sam has racked up 150,000 Instagram followers and 530,000 likes on Facebook since bursting onto the scene in 2012. Owner Amanda Collado, 26, from New York, has been handling the large amount of requests from fans and media for the past three years. She said, “There have definitely been situations where I have had to ignore friends, family or work to take the time to do Sam's posts or answer emails on his behalf. Everyone gets a little annoyed when I'm on my phone and not paying attention to them. I never thought Sam would be so popular.” Amanda's mum, Ivette Rodriguez, noticed the abandoned cat outside her home one evening. Ivette said, “I saw a little niche (壁龛) next to the house and there was a cat in there. He willingly gave himself up to me—I guess he was so tired of being outside.” Amanda created an Instagram account for Sam after a friend pointed out his expressive brows. She said, “I didn't notice his eyebrows initially.” “He had about 800 followers at first—but in February someone posted his photo on Reddit and he blew up overnight—I woke up with 1600 followers. From there we made a Facebook and all other social media accounts.” Amanda posts pictures to Sam's account every two days, but spends most of her day keeping up with all of his fans. But the effort she puts into her pet's social media has paid off—and she has bigger plans for Sam's future, including merchandise (商品). “Right now we're trying to share him in a free way. Eventually we'll sell Sam merchandise, because I know many people do like having cute little mugs, Sam mugs, or posters, T-shirts.” 21. Why does Amanda sometimes ignore her friends? A. B When Sara and Nathan Jones were training to become foster parents(养父母), their son, Noah, learned a tough thing or two about foster care. For instance, nearly 600 local foster kids changed families every year, and they carried their belongings from one home to the next in black garbage bags. Noah, then ten, couldn't imagine squeezing his clothes, favorite toy, and soccer ball into a trash bag and dragging it to a new house in the middle of the night .“Packing kids' belongings into garbage bags is like telling them that their stuff has no more worth than trash,” says Noah. So with help from his parents and younger sisters, Macy, then nine, and Molly, then seven, Noah began to collect suitcases and duffel bags(行李袋) from friends and extended family; he received more than 100 bags in less than two weeks. He then sent letters to churches and put ads in local newspapers and on radio stations asking for donations. Within a few months, the family was collecting about 500 bags a week, which they stored briefly in their spare bathroom and downstairs hallway before giving them to foster care caseworkers. In addition to suitcases, Noah now provides foster kids with backpacks containing shampoo, soap, a journal, and a toy—all donated. “My hope is that by giving the children things that are just theirs, they will feel a little control in the midst of the chaos,” says Noah. Noah's group, A Case for Dignity, collects and distributes hundreds of bags a year. He recently convinced foster care managers from 15 Kentucky counties to use his bags instead of trash bags. “I've been so inspired by him,” says his mom, “If a ten-year-old can see a problem and create a solution, how much more can we do as adults?” 24.What problem did Noah find about the local foster care? A. It was tough to care for foster kids. B. Proper containers were not available to foster kids. C. Foster kids had too much stuff. D. Foster kids did not get along with their new parents. 25.How might foster kids feel when packing belongings into garbage bags? A. Abandoned. B. Angry. C. Numb. D. Discriminated. 26.Why does Noah provide foster kids with other things besides suitcases? A. To help set up A Case for Dignity. B. To convince foster care managers. C. To appeal to more people to donate. D. To prevent foster kids feeling lost. 27.What can we infer from Sara's words in the last paragraph? A. Young kids are better at finding solutions. B. Adults should do more to help foster kids. C. Adults can collect more suitcases than children. D. Adults should do something to inspire kids. C A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night. Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food. Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows’ milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night. Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium(钙) content, which helps people to relax. Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night. 28. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_______. A. were less active B. started sleep more easily C. woke up later D. were more anxious 29. Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text? A. It’s used in sleeping drugs. B. It’s been tested on mice for ten times. C. It can make people more energetic. D. It exists in milk in great amount. 30.What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Night Milk and Sleep B. Milk Drinking and Health C. An Experiment on Mice D. Fat, Sugar and Health 35. How does the author support the theme of the text? A. By providing research results. B. By stating arguments. C. By explaining statistical data. D. By giving examples. D Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys? The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils (灾祸). People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches. Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites (食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye. Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help. The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully. 32. Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their_______ . A. cultural values B. commercial purposes C. personal experiences D. bodies’ reactions to the color 33. Why will many commercial websites have a red “Buy Now” button? A. To relax people physically. Your cousin has a one-year-old child that puts her bottle in the sink when she finishes the milk, but no reminders are needed. 36 Raising helpful, good kids who know how to make a sandwich is not a fantasy! The following tips can give you a better chance of raising a responsible child who then grows into a responsible adult. 37 You can’t suddenly spring responsibility on a teenager and expect he will know how to follow through. He needs time to practice and totally understand what responsibility means. Let kids help you. Don’t complain when it's time to do housework. Smile and invite your son to help. 38 He will take these good feelings and learn to take ownership of his home and feel pride in keeping it up. 39 Make responsibilities age-appropriate. You can show how to complete small tasks in daily life and perform them at a child’s skill level. For example, if your kid wants a snack, show him where the apples are and how to wash one off. Teach your child consequences. Learning to take care of his things also helps a child develop a sense of responsibility for his actions. Get your son to clean up after an art project, and inform him that he won’t be able to play with his crayons the next day if he leaves a messy table. 40 The more you carry out the rules, the more likely he is to clean up without being asked A.Show kids how to perform responsibility.
