‎ 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分: 阅读理解 (共两节,满分35分)‎ 第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)‎ A The idea for traffic lights began in the 1800s when a system was required to control the ever-increasing flow of horse-drawn traffic. In 1868, in London, a signal was installed (安装) at the crossing of George Street and Bridge Street, near Parliament. This provided walkers with a safe crossing.‎ The system contained a semaphore(信号标)— a tall post with moveable arms. When the arms were positioned sideways it meant stop. After dark, a gas light was lit at the top. The green colored glass meant go, while red meant stop. At first, signals were controlled by hand, with officers deciding when the signals should be changed according to traffic flow. They blew a whistle to warn drivers that the signal was going to change.‎ However, in 1869, a traffic signal exploded following a leak(泄露)in one of the gas lines below, severely injuring the policeman operating it. This led to the semaphore project being dropped in London. ‎ Then in Utah in 1912, Policeman Lester Wire developed the first electric light system with red and green lights. Two years later, the first electric signal was installed in Cleveland. It was based on a design by James Hoge and allowed the police and firefighters to control the signals in case of ‎ emergencies.‎ In Detroit, William Potts, also a police officer, looked to adapt railroad signals to be used on streets and developed a system with red, yellowish brown and green lights. He made the first four-way three colored traffic system, and it was installed on the Wood ward and Michigan Avenues in Detroit in 1920. A year later there were 15 automatic(自动的)light systems.‎ The first electric traffic lights to be installed in England were in Piccadilly Circus in 1926. Just over 60 years later traffic lights became the subject of an art installation near London’s Canary Wharf.‎ 1. The second paragraph mainly tells readers ________.‎ A. how the original traffic lights functioned B. how the semaphore was installed ‎ C. why a whistle was needed to control the traffic D. why signals should be changed by traffic officers.‎ 2. Why was the semaphore project dropped in London?‎ A. It was not environmentally friendly. B. It was not easy to operate. ‎ C. It turned out to be unsafe. D. It was expensive to afford.‎ 3. The text is developed mainly by _______.‎ A. following space order B. following time order C. making comparisons D. giving examples B How you move and gesture says as much about you as what comes out of your mouth.‎ Jenny Smith, 34, an assistant vice-president at a bank in New York, was interviewing candidates (应考生) for a position which required a person with good communication skills.‎ One candidate in particular stood out, but not in a good way. While she could have been very intelligent, her body language sent out very different messages. Her handshake was more of a finger shaker, and her eye contact was weak.‎ To Jenny, what the candidate said didn’t matter because her body language said everything: she wasn’t suitable for the position. The candidate may have been quite appropriate(合适的), but she didn’t manage to get that across. So our body language may not do us justice. But there are some signals which are very common and are worth a thousand words.‎ For example, a handshake can say much more than “hello, nice to meet you”. The most important part of a handshake is palm-to-palm contact. It’s even more important than how strong your handshake is. The palm-to-palm contact makes people seem honest: it seems to say “I am sincere(真诚的)”. A weak handshake—when the palms don’t touch —makes you seem unfriendly, insincere.‎ But people sometimes use body language to give each other the wrong impression. Somebody who has a firm handshake may be pretending to be sincere, and somebody with a weak handshake may just be a bit shy and nothing more.‎ Body language can also be overdone. While eye contact gives an impression of friendliness, too much eye contact or eye contact which is too intense(极为强烈的) can make people feel uncomfortable.‎ 1. The candidate for the job failed because _______.‎ A. She wasn’t clever enough B. she used improper body language ‎ C. she said the wrong things D. she expressed a bad attitude 2. When you shake someone’s hand you should ______.‎ A. hold his hand with great strength B. make frequent eye contact ‎ C. say something sincere D. make good contact with their hand ‎ 3. According to the sixth paragraph, our body language _______.‎ A. may give other people the false idea B. is much more important than what you say ‎ C. tells other people what you are really like D. are ignored by most people 1. What is the main purpose of the text?‎ A. To help readers get a better job B. To show why handshakes are important ‎ C. To introduce body language to readers. D. To explain what the right communication skills are ‎ C ‎ Types of Fire Extinguishers(灭火器)‎ Fire extinguishers are marked according to the kind of fire on which they should be used. Using the wrong type of extinguisher can be dangerous and make things worse.‎ Type A extinguishers are used for fires on paper, cloth, wood, rubber, many plastic and so on. These types of fires usually leave ashes when they burn, so use Type A extinguishers for fires that leave ashes.‎ Type B extinguishers are used for burning liquids, such as oil, gasoline, and paints. These substances often come in barrel-shaped(桶形的)containers, so use Type B extinguishers for such barrels.‎ Type C extinguishers are used for electrical fires. Electricity travels in a circuit(电路), so use Type C extinguishers for circuits.‎ Remember A is for Ashes, B is for Barrels, and C is for Circuits. Make sure you have the correct type of fire extinguisher before you try to use it.‎ Using a Fire Extinguisher To help you remember how to use a fire extinguisher, learn PASS. PASS stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze(挤压),and Sweep.‎ Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher cylinder(圆桶).‎ Aim the nozzle(喷嘴) at the base of the fire.‎ Squeeze or press the handle.‎ Sweep the spray(喷雾) from side-to-side at the fire’s base until it goes out.‎ 1. Check whether you have chosen a right one. ‎ C. Make sure you have an instructor beside you. D. Make sure you have mastered the way to use one.‎ 3. Why do their parents just give them a certain amount? 11 ‎ The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. 12 Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money. ‎ First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until it is the right time. 13  ‎ In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents give pocket money if the children help around the home. Some experts think it not wise to pay the children for doing that. ‎ ‎14  ‎ Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the money.
