Ⅱ. Passage 1 My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month. Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading isn't one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can't read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads e-mails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He's busy so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading. My dad is by no means the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax 2 on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there're lots of benefits to reading, which screen-based activities don't have. Firstly, it's better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night's sleep. One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world—I would often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better. I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people's point of view, and understand other people's decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling—you really can be inside someone else's head! So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you're waking up, going to bed, eating too much, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading! 1.The author gives the example of his father in the text to show . They feel heavy pressures from their parents. Most students are always told by their parents to study harder and better so that they can have a wonderful life in the future. Though this may be a good idea for those very bright students, it can have terrible results for many students who are not gifted enough. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have their parents lose hope. Such students feel that they are hated by everyone else they meet and they don't want to go to school any longer. They become dropouts. It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers' work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents force their children to those schools opening in the evenings and on weekends—they only help the students to pass the exams and never teach them any real sense of the world. Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students' hair to their clothes and things in their schoolbags. Child psychologists now think that such strict rules are harmful to the feelings of the students. Almost 40% of the students said that no one had taught them how to get on with others, how to tell right from wrong and how to show love and care for others, even for their parents. 5.“Dropouts” are those who . ( ) A.make trouble in and out of schools B.go about or stay home instead of being at school C.try hard but always fail in the exams D.lose hope and give up some of their subjects 6.The underlined word “gifted” in the first paragraph means . ( ) A.hard-working B.talented 4 C.gentle D.warm-hearted 7.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true for Japanese parents? ( ) A.They think helping children's study is none of their business. B.They push their children too much on studies. C.They often worried about their children's studies. D.They only help their children to pass the exams. 8.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV.” 根据第五段第一句“One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world—I would often forget the time or things around me!” 故选 A。 根据文章第一段“My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month.” 根据第一段“Such students feel that they are hated by everyone else they meet and they don't want to go to school any longer.”(这样的学生觉得他们被他们见到的人讨厌,他们不想再去 学校)可推知答案为 B。 由后一句“Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have their parents lose hope.”(他们已经非常努力了,还是学不好)可知这些孩子缺乏天赋。另 外,“Though this may be a good idea for those very bright students, it can have terrible results for many students who are not gifted enough.” 其中“To make matters worse, a lot of parents force their children to those schools opening in the evenings and on weekends—they only help the students to pass the exams and never teach them any real sense of the world.”,一字线 后面的 they 指的是 those schools,而不是 parents。 Ⅲ.1—5 CFDEA
