B I’m going to be completely honest. I have no idea how I ended up with this opportunity, I have no idea what I’m doing, but I am very happy to be here. Last summer a friend tagged(贴标签)me in a Facebook post from BBC Earth and encouraged me to apply to the BBC Presenter Search 2018. The assignment was easy and hard, make a video shorter than 60 seconds where you talk about something in science you think is cool. Simple concept, but for me it was challenging as I want to talk about bryophytes(苔藓植物) forever (which is slightly longer than 60 seconds). So I decided to make an attempt. I was going to make a 60 second video about sphagnum(水苔), commonly known as peat moss and uncommonly known as an unsung climate hero. Sphagnum is the plant genus that holds the most carbon in the world, it slowly builds up its carbon storage over hundreds of thousands of years and if undisturbed, they never let go of the carbon they gathered. Making a short video on this was hard because I wanted to include everything. And it became even harder as I had no one to hold the camera. I tied my camera to the scrawniest little tree, swinging in the wind as a bird tried to chase me away from the mud. This chaos ended up as the video “Why sphagnum is awesome” on my channel. I submitted the video, but didn’t dare to write in the description section of the video that it was a submission(服从), because I never imagined that I could win! But I did. I waited two months before I could tell people that I had won the search, and when the news came out, I received the most attention I’ve had in my entire life. No matter your background, whether you want to pass the time or pass an exam, I really hope you enjoy the video! 24. What can we infer about the author from paragraph 1? A. She is uncertain about the result. B. She gets used to telling people lies. C. She is unable to achieve the goal. D. She knows much about the ending. 25. Which of the following is NOT true about sphagnum? A. It can form its carbon storage in a very slow way. B. It is universally recognized as an unknown climate hero. C. It won’t release the carbon without being disturbed. D. It contains a large amount of carbon. 26. The underlined word “scrawniest” in Paragraph 4 probably means ___________. A. weakest B. strongest C. shortest D. most energetic 27. What can we learn from the author’s story? A. She shows great interest in filming the video. B. Her knowledge helps overcome all the difficulties. C. Her attitude and hard work pay off eventually. D. She is more than delighted to gain the most attention. C Chinese Culture Shown to the World with Love Li Ziqi, a short video blogger specializing in traditional Chinese cooking and handicrafts, has gained worldwide popularity. Li has about 20 million followers on Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent to Twitter, plus 7 million followers on overseas social media networks. Many foreigners say they have got to know traditional Chinese food culture via her channel. It is the spirit of craftsmanship (技艺) behind her works that makes Li’s video clips attractive. She strictly follows the authentic traditional steps and procedures in making traditional Chinese food and handicrafts, such as peach flower wine and silk, and goes to great lengths to ensure her videos are accurate. Sometimes she spends several months producing one of her videos. Li has been inheriting (继承) traditional Chinese culture in a rather creative way. A closer look at her videos will show that they are never with any “analysis” that makes people feel bored. They just show audiences each and every detail of traditional Chinese culture so that the latter knows how Chinese live their beautiful and elegant lives. It is that universal(广泛的) appeal(吸引) that makes her works so attractive. Thanks to Li's efforts, many intangible cultural heritages that only existed in memories and written records now appear before our eyes. Via her short videos, Li presents the image of a beautiful and friendly China. With the growth of the Chinese economy, people overseas are showing more interest in traditional Chinese culture. Li has shown how to satisfy that interest in a good way, namely showing the best parts of traditional Chinese culture with her heart. To effectively present the beauty of Chinese culture to the world, we need more Li Ziqi. 28. What can we learn about Li Ziqi’s video clips? A. They promote the sales of Chinese food and handicrafts. B. They attract a large number of foreigners to visit her online shop. C. They aim to introduce traditional Chinese food culture and handicrafts worldwide. D. They are based on her family’s recipes of making traditional Chinese food. 29. What could be inferred from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4? A. Analysis of Chinese culture in Li’s videos makes people bored. B. Details and accuracy play significant roles in the success of Li’s videos. C. Li makes sure all of her video clips are short enough to be downloaded. D. Cultural heritages usually exist in memories and written accounts. 30. What does the underlined word “intangible” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Nonphysical B. inaccessible C. invaluable D. unnoticeable 31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To provide guidance on cooking and making handicrafts. B. To suggest a way of attracting more followers on Sina Weibo. C.To give an example of how to gain worldwide popularity as a a short video blogger. D. To encourage more people to make efforts to bring Chinese culture to the world. D All over the world the need for more laptops and computers increases each year. Networks have been part of our life. Probably everyone with a portable device (移动设备) has once logged on to a public Wi-Fi network without paying for it while they are having a coffee, on a train, in a shopping mall or at a hotel. However, is this kind of public Wi-Fi network safe? Some networks are better protected than others because encryption (加密) methods are used. Therefore, they are safer than others. But a survey in 2015 showed that more than 950 million records were not protected. including addresses. emails, birth dates, phone numbers, passwords and so on. These open Wi-Fi networks are really not safe. because it is very easy for hackers (黑客) to break into the operating system and get people's private information. Most smart phones and laptops, by themselves, search and connect to Wi-Fi networks. They usually prefer a network with a connection that has been used before. Hackers' devices are able to record these searches and look like the trusted Wi-Fi networks. When these smart phones and laptops log on to the networks which are not real, hackers can easily steal their private information. So next time, when we want to use our laptops or our smart-phones in public places which offer free Wi-Fi networks, please think twice or take safe measures before using them. 32. Why do people like to log on to a public Wi-Fi network? A. Because it is free. B. Because it is safe. C. Because it can provide useful information. D. Because the owner of the network is helpful. 33. We can learn from the passage that __________. A. not all the public Wi-Fi networks are safe B. all the public Wi-Fi networks are safe to use C. in 2015 more than 950 million records were protected D. there is no way to protect our private information 34. Hackers would probably get the following EXCEPT _________ when we connect our laptops or smart-phones to a public Wi-Fi network. A. our birth dates B. our passwords C. our phone numbers D. our smart-phones 35. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage? A. Never Trust Public Wi-Fi Networks B.
