We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the talk into World War III. She'll say I won't have a bright future because I don't plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment(失望), I don't want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when l was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修)in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack. "Why can't you be like my friend's son?" she complains all the time. Her friend's son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don't know what to answer except that I simply can't be like Mr Perfect as I've called the unnamed friend's son. I can't be like him. I am the type of the person who loved to help out in the community(社区),write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a job because I love it, not because of a fame(名声)or money. I understand why my mother is worried about my future plan. I've seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small amount of money and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn't mean I'll be successful. I'd rather follow my dreams and create my own future. 26. Which of the following do the writer and his mother often talk about? A. The writer's studies. B. Wars around the world. C. Dinner plans. D. The writer's future job. 27. What CANNOT we learn about the writer's mother from Paragraph l? 9 A. She thinks the writer should be a doctor. B. She has heart trouble. C. She doesn't get along very well with the writer. D. She doesn't want the writer to major in English. 28. Which of the following is probably true about the writer? A. He thinks he is better than his mother's friend's son. B. He wants to find a job in his community in the future. C. He wants to do something he really likes in the future. D. He doesn't think his mother's friend's son is perfect. 29. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. The writer's mother works very hard for the family. B. The writer thinks he has a bright future. C. The writer doesn't think being a doctor is a good job. D. The writer doesn't think he can be a successful doctor. B There is no doubt that mothers play an important leading role in the lives of their children. But what about a father's role? I believe that fathers play just as important a role as mothers. Fathers give us support. They are the shore(岸)we swim to when our arms and legs feel increasingly tired. They are the strength we rely on(依靠) as we take our first steps into the world. Fathers can be gentle and powerful, but they probably have the simplest love we ever know. _______, the father is their first hero and possibly the only man they will ever feel comfortable loving. For daughters, the father is the first man they admire and the first man whose eyes shine with happiness when they look at them. He is the first man to fall in love with them. For mothers, the father of our children is the person we can believe in to watch over the babies as closely as we would. We are protected in the knowledge of their love. A father is the person on the planet with whom we can do whatever we want ... one who will be just as interested and never feel bored in the face of our devotion. Without fathers, we wouldn't be mums. I would like to thank them from all our hearts for this honor and for being our partners in the business of raising children. 30. From the passage, we can know the writer is a_______. A. father B. mother C. son D. daughter 31. Which of the following can be put on the line in the third paragraph? A. For parents. B. For families. C. For others. D. For sons. 32. According to the passage, we can know that . A. fathers' love is different from mothers' B. fathers are always simple and strong C. fathers can look after their babies better 9 D. fathers are more important than mothers 33. The best title for the passage is_______. A. Father, I love you B. Fathers are our heroes C. The importance of fathers D. Fathers and mothers C Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mum, you must come and see the daffodils (水仙花) before they are over." I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. "I will come next Tuesday," I promised, a little unwillingly, on her third call. Next Tuesday got cold and rainy. But since I had promised, I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house and greeted my grandchildren, I said, "Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the cloud and fog, and now there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!" My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the time, Mum." After about 20 minutes, we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church(教堂). On the side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read, "Daffodil Garden." We got out of the car and each took a child by the hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we came to a corner of the path. Then, I wondered at the sight before me. There were five acres (英亩) of flowers. "But who has done this?" I asked Carolyn. "It's just one woman," Carolyn answered. "She lives there. That's her house." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-shaped house that looked small and modest. We walked up to the house. On the door, we saw a poster. "Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking" was the headline(标题). The first answer was a simple one. "50,000 bulbs(球茎)," it read. The second answer was, "One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain." The third answer was, "Began in 1958." For me, that moment was a life-changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who began more than fifty years ago - one bulb at a time - to bring her beauty and joy to the field. 34. The writer didn't want to go to see the daffodils at first because_______. A. she was not interested in them B. they were nearly over C. the weather was not good enough 9 D. it took a long time to drive there 35. What does the underlined word "invisible" mean in Chinese? A.不平坦的 B.看不见的 C.狭窄的 D.到头的 36. How many people went to see the daffodils with the writer on that Tuesday? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 37. What could the writer probably learn from this experience? A. A baby step at a time, a great change in life. B. It's never too late to learn. C. We can change the world by growing flowers. D. We must put the interest of others above our own. D If you want to check where the nearest coffee shop to your home is, if you want to know how to get to a place in your city, or if you want to see where in the world your foreign pen friend lives, there's now a new free online map you can use. Last month, China started its official online mapping service, Map World. "Through this free online service users can fly over mountains and valleys around the world and search for restaurants and traffic information across the country for free," said Xu Deming, director of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM). The bureau, which does China's surveying and mapping work, is in charge of the Map World project. Users can get into Map World through www.tianditu.cn or www.chinaonmap.cn and search for 2- and 3-D images from across the world. The home page shows a view of the Great Wall. "It took about two years to prepare the service with all the satellite(卫星) images taken from 2006 t0 2010," said Jiang Jie, director of the database department(数据库部门) under SBSM. The technology(技术) and website are still at an early stage. The images from inside China are detailed. Users can see close pictures of roadsides. But the views of places outside China are less clear. Service providers have more than 80 machines, with the ability to deal with 10 million requests (请求) daily, while Google Earth, Google's mapping service, has thousands of machines, Jiang said. "Our map service can update(更新) data about twice a year, but Google Earth can update its information every couple of minutes, through satellites," Jiang said. The bureau said it will continue developing Map World. At the same time, you can have a try for yourself. Some users have given their opinions about the service after trying it. One student in Beijing said that Map World even shows the small bookstore near her school. 38. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph? A. To show how valuable the service is. B. To introduce the new online photo-map of China. 9 C. To show the importance of the new online photo-map. D. To tell how popular the new online photo-map is in China. 39. According to the Bureau, Map World_______. A. only has images of China B. will need another two years to complete C. needs further development D. begins with the Great Wall 40. What disadvantages does Map World have, compared with Google Earth? A. Information is updated much less often. B. It provided less clear images of places. C. Its machines are less high technology. D.
