When asked about happiness,we usually think of something extraordinary,an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer as we get older. For kids, happiness has a magical quality.Their delight of winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved(毫不掩饰的). In the teenage years, the concept of happiness changes.Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity.I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party. In adulthood the things that bring deep joy—love, marriage, birth—also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated(复杂的). My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”.The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook(忽视) the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health. I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday.First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunchbox and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home,I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day. Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work.I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her most. We,however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier. Happiness isn’t about what happens to us—it’s about how we see what happens to us.It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess. 1.According to the passage,as people grow older, what do they feel? When sculpting ice,Wardley has to work in cold temperatures. If the weather is cold enough,he can work outside. But winter in the United Kingdom is not always very cold.So often he works in a large freezer where the temperature is about -12 ℃. Wardley enjoys sculpting ice outside in winter. When he sculpts in the open air, people can watch. They can be part of the creative process. Wardley makes ice sculpting sound simple. But the tools Wardley uses are sharp and dangerous. And the ice is very heavy. Each block of ice weighs 120 kilos. And some larger sculptures are made of several combined blocks of ice.Sometimes ice sculptures can be as big as buildings. In Kemi,Finland there is an ice hotel called the Snow Castle. Each year,Wardley helps build the Snow Castle. Inside the Snow Castle, the temperature is -50℃.Even the dining tables are made of ice.So you have to wear winter clothes when eating and wear a hat when sleeping.“The ice hotel is built every year in January. Then it melts in April. Each year we rebuild it and create a new design,” Wardley said. The Snow Castle is a large and amazing work of ice,but Wardley’s smaller ice sculptures are special too.One winter,in the city of Bradford, the UK,Wardley created several small sculptures. He used the sculptures to tell a story which contained an important message about goodwill and understanding. Ice sculptures are temporary works of art. When the temperature rises, they will melt. But that does not mean that their beauty is lost. The sculptures from that day in Bradford have now melted away, but their message of goodwill, understanding and acceptance remains. 1.According to the text,Wardley . In the past, news outlets simply wanted to get people to watch their shows or buy their papers.Shocking stories made people want to tune in to them. But now, people get their news from various sources.Actually, people want to share with their social media networks. And fortunately, happiness spreads more quickly than tragedies. In a new study, researchers tracked the online reach of about 7,000 articles from The New York Times over a three-month period. They found that the stories that focused on good news had more clicks and shares than negative stories. Even better, researchers at the University of Tübingen in Germany found that when our social media connections read these happy stories, they in turn become happier, and thus more likely to also share happy stories.Happiness,as it turns out,is contagious(富有感染力的).The other side of this research is that negative stories are also contagious. When people read negative posts or stories shared by their friends, they are more likely to also share negative posts. But fortunately, according to the study of the University of Pennsylvania, people prefer good news to bad news. The happier and more positive an article was,the more likely it was to be shared. So,if you want to make the world a better place,go ahead and watch the pet rescue or giggling baby video. And then brighten up the world by sharing it with your friends. 5.According to the classic rule of news, people would like to read stories about . The second kind of happiness that I talk about comes from our expectations out of our lives, which vary from person to person. For example,a person who expects a lot out of his or her life may find that happiness is hard to find. They are constantly in search of these things in life, which always seem to elude(逃避) them. Those things may be money or fame or power or any of the other pursuits(追求) that humans have, but it would be likely that such people are less likely to be happy,if their goals are not met.In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don’t find happiness, because they seek more—new goals, new wish lists, and it’s a seemingly never-ending process for them! On the other hand,a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is more likely to be happy every day. They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc.Of course, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have any expectations at all.You should keep those expectations reasonable and manageable. 9.Which of the following is the author’s opinion according to Paragraph 1? A.The person who has few expectations. B.The person who has no pressure or goals. C.The person who has a great ambition or dream. D.The person who can find fun from his daily life. 根据最后一段第二句“They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life...” 12.The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers . A.the definition of happiness B.the importance of happiness C.to enjoy every day to the fullest D.to give up their dreams and be practical 答案 C 解析 写作目的题。最后一段第一句“On the other hand,a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is more likely to be happy every day.” Ⅱ. Why doesn’t the conductor face the audience? 13 As the only person with his back to the audience, the conductor is a figure who is bathed in the spotlight, but his complex work requires a high degree of musical skills,as well as an ability to extract what he desires out of the group of artists he leads—his orchestra. 14 A person may become a conductor without graduating from the conducting department of a music school or studying in any kind of conductor’s training program. However, becoming the conductor of a famous orchestra requires a great deal more than what is needed merely to join an orchestra. 15 These naturally examine a conductor’s technique and musical interpretation when he conducts an orchestra through a prepared piece of music, but they also involve a sight-reading element. 16 The conductor then has to sit in a room and memorize the piece before coming out and leading the orchestra through the piece by memory. Not only does the conductor have to make his arm and hand motion properly, and signal all the entrances of each instrument,he has to point out intentional mistakes made by the orchestra members on the spot. The least capabilities a conductor must have are:The ability to memorize an entire score.A good ear for distinguishing correct notes among the music of the entire orchestra. 17 Of the conductors that meet these requirements, those with better musical insight and a higher level of charisma(魅力) will succeed. A.The need for a common musical standard becomes necessary. B.The ability to lead a group of professional musicians. C.There are many conducting competitions. We never seemed to get away from dust in New Mexico,so I appreciate the story of a newcomer to the Land of Enchantment who learned about dusty wind. She was visiting an antique shop and the owner wiped down every item before showing it.The newcomer said,“Everything gets dusty here pretty quickly, doesn’t it?” “That’s not dust, honey,” the shop owner replied,“That’s ENCHANTMENT.”That made the problem more acceptable. An escalator(自动扶梯) broke,so he posted a sign to warn customers. He chose not to use the traditional “Out of Order” or “Do Not Use” warnings.Instead, his sign read,“This Escalator Is Temporarily a Stairway”.He turned a minus into humor and made it a plus. And in fact there are some things, like the weather,we can’t change. All we can change is our ways that we think and feel about them.I believe one of the best techniques to do this is to find some humor in the situation.Finding something amusing or enjoyable of difficulty,a troublesome problem can be one of the most creative and effective things we can do.Sometimes the only sense you can make of a situation is a sense of humor. 41.How many places has the author lived in according to the first paragraph? Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝) and inactive. Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life. These include custom-made navigation(导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations.Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others. “But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.” Dr Amy Guo,the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains:“The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems. “For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly,we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that. “We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(解决方案) to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.” 语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了英国纽卡斯尔大学的研究团队为保证老年人自行驾车从而独立生活而进行的辅助驾驶系统的研发。 25.What is the purpose of the DriveLAB? Take time to look back and think about people in your life who is an authority or a leader at work, who has more credibility(可信度) than you or who you look up to and inspires you. They are up there not for the reasons you think. If you really think about it,they aren’t the smartest of the bunch, not the most educated, and neither are they the best. And in no way do they even call themselves an expert.Instead, they are up there because they are great teachers and advocates(支持者) for the success of their customers or employees. Let’s take Richard Simmons for example. This famous fitness personality has been a household name ever since he started gaining popularity during the first few years of his career.Stop and think, though,do you really think he is the best person to really get people into shape? Is he the Einstein of fitness and nutrition?Or does he even call himself a master of his craft?Of course not.People look up to him and give him authority because he is a great educator.Instead of sharing information that’s far too complicated to understand,he figures out what your problems are and finds out a way to fix them.He even has social media that he updates on a regular basis with topics that are helpful and easy to understand for his fans and followers. Depending on the field you’re in,you can share with people things you know and that you think they will want to know as well.If you’re a nurse, for example, you can make a blog post for common health problems and quick remedies(治疗方法) people can do at home.Remember, the simpler you can make it,the better.People will trust you completely if you give them easy solutions.Like Richard, you’ll soon be the expert you’ll want to listen to.You can be an advocate also by showing people that you have their best interests at heart. You can also start up conferences to take up people’s concerns and try to deal with them the best way that you can. So,how will you be viewed as an authority?Make that mind shift.Find out what concerns and troubles your target.Give solutions.Show that you care. And help them climb up that ladder of success.Ladies and gentlemen, that’s how it’s done. 语篇解读 本文讨论的是:你是否曾经觉得自己没有得到应有的尊重?你是否想成为别人敬仰的对象?并就这些问题给出了自己的建议。 41.What can we know about Richard Simmons? But now,it seems like the answer could have been inside our own bodies the whole time. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US,a government agency that’s responsible for healthcare, approved a new form of gene therapy that could mean the end of a certain type of cancer. The therapy allows scientists to “train” the immune cells of sick patients to fight leukemia—a blood cancer that mostly affects young people. The exciting new treatment works by removing healthy immune cells from the patient, known as Tcells, which are then altered to be able to “hunt down” cancer cells. The cells are then put back into the patient, before they begin to get rid of the patient’s leukemia over time, similar to how the body fights off other illnesses. “This is truly an exciting new day for cancer patients,” Louis J.DeGennaro, president of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, said in a news release.Up until now,a drawnout(持续很久的) and painful bone marrow transplant was the only option for many leukemia patients. In this procedure, healthy blood cells are taken from a donor and placed into the sick patient, who also has to go through chemotherapy to allow their body to adjust to the new cells. But with a recovery rate of around 83 percent—according to a news release published by the FDA—it’s hoped that the days of painful trips to the hospital,or even death, are over for leukemia sufferers. “We’re entering a new frontier in medical innovation with the ability to reprogram a patient’s own cells to attack a deadly cancer,” FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in the release. “New technologies such as gene and cell therapies hold the potential to transform medicine and...our ability to treat and even cure many intractable(难治的) illnesses.” 语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文,介绍了一种治疗癌症的新方法。 41.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? I married after graduation and decided to start a family.Of course,I had no idea what hard knocks reality had in store for my selfish soul.Soon I found myself unemployed, deeply in debt, and with a new baby on the way.I found out that life has little sympathy for spoiled people. In fact, all of the struggles I was going through were beating the selfishness slowly out of me. Still,I didn’t give up on happiness.I knew that there must be a way to find it.I finally realized, however, that it had to include more than just my own needs, wants, and desires. The answer began to make itself clear one night shortly after my baby boy was born.I got a bottle and held him in my arms.As I was feeding him I looked down and saw his big, innocent, trusting eyes.I smiled and talked to him. Then he smiled and I could feel my heart growing, expanding with love.I felt such peace and joy.At that moment I had a hint of the truth:it is by growing our hearts with love that we find our happiness. Carolyn Arends wrote: “The more people you let into your heart, the bigger your heart gets. The more love you get,the more love you have to give.It just keeps growing.” So,keep loving, keep living and keep caring.Keep growing your heart today, tomorrow, and always. 语篇解读 本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,主要讲述作者由一个自私的人成长为一个心中对他人有爱的人,也明白了“爱他人即幸福”的道理。 1.What do we know about the author from the first paragraph?
