In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks and shirt as he went.‎ ‎ He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator(短吻鳄) was getting close. The mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In great fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U—turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched(抓住) his legs. That began an unbelievable tug-of-war(拔河比赛) between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams, rushed from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.‎ ‎ Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the terrible attack of the animal. And on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother’s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.‎ ‎ The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma(外伤), asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted the pant legs. And then, with obvious ‎ pride, he said to the reporter,“Look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn’t let go.”‎ ‎ You and I can identify with(认同) that little boy. We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friends, are because we have refused to let go.‎ ‎9.The underlined part“the two”in the second paragraph refers to       .‎ ‎  A. the son and the alligator        B.the mother and the son ‎  C.the driver and the alligator       D. the alligator and the mother ‎10.From the passage we can infer        .‎ ‎  A.The mother was unwilling to let the alligator go ‎  B.The mother was actually stronger than the alligator ‎  C.The son was proud of his scars on his arms ‎ ‎  D.The son was ashamed of his scars on his legs ‎11.According to the last paragraph, what is the writer’s real meaning?‎ ‎  A.To forget the past is to betray.       B.We should forget the scars.‎ C.Wounds are different from scars.     D.We should learn to let go sometimes.‎ ‎12.What type does the author develop the passage ?‎ A. Then she said, "I shook my head no, and then they said 'yes' and it was announced again."‎ ‎ It was four days after that life changing moment for the seventeen-year-old high school student from Destrehan, Louisiana -- she was still on cloud nine.‎ ‎ "I was so shocked! I never believed that it could actually really happen." Present in the audience that day were: her mother and father, older brother, her friends, and her dance teacher.‎ ‎ Understanding why members of her family and her friends would be there, AT asked why her dance teacher had traveled so far to see her compete. "She's always been my role model. I've danced with her since I was six. She's been through so many difficulties and came through them all. I've learned to get over bad life's experiences and learned how to move on because of her."‎ ‎ One of those bad life's experiences for Shelley happened three years ago when her brother Brad was killed in a drunk driving accident. He was 18. She found writing helped her get through the rough days. She said, "I write a lot about my brother. I write a lot, a lot, a lot..."‎ ‎ As Miss Louisiana Teen, she traveled around the state speaking to teens about the dangers of drinking and driving. In her role as Miss Teen USA, Shelley will continue to speak to youth about safe driving, in addition to many other things to help the youth.‎ ‎    When AT asked Miss Teen USA if she had any advice for our readers, she said, "Don't let anyone change you. As for school activities, students mainly hold two views.‎ ‎ Many students are very enthusiastic about school activities because they think that learning from textbooks is not their only task and they should take every chance to get some practical knowledge. Besides, after long hours’ study, they can relax themselves by practicing in school activities.‎ ‎ However , a large group of students take little interest in them and spend most of their time on study. They believe that they should make full use of time to study and that school activities have nothing to do with their further development.‎ ‎ As far as I am concerned, I prefer the first view. On the other hand,we can learn a great deal from other students we meet in activities. Furthermore, modern society requires many qualities of young students, so “book worms” can’t keep up with the times.‎
