Milestone Hotel B Romy McCloskey is a professional fashion designer from Texas who also raises monarch butterflies(帝王蝶)as a hobby. Recently she received a lot of praise online. That happened after a series of photos of her using household things to fix the damaged wing of one of her butterflies spread very quickly on the Internet. Romy started raising monarch butterflies and putting them back into the wild some time ago. Recently, she noticed that one of the insects was born with a broken left wing and could not fly. Monarchs can live from two weeks to about five months, but without the ability to fly, this little guy wasn’t going to live very long. So Romy decided to use her skills to help it. Using the left wing of a female monarch butterfly that had died of natural causes, as well as a number of household things, the butterfly keeper set out to fix the wing of the butterfly. First, she fixed the tiny insect in place, and then cut off the damaged parts of its wing. It was a painless process similar to the process of cutting hair or fingernails. She then used glue to attach the wing of dead female butterfly. While the black lines didn’t match perfectly, and the new wing lacked the black dot of male monarchs, the repaired wing looked a lot better than before. Romy let it rest for a night and fed it lots of home-made nectar(花蜜). The next day, she took it out to her backyard and set it free. The butterfly took off and after a quick lap around the yard and a quick rest on a flower--- probably to calm its nervousness---the little guy flew away. 25.What happened to Romy McCloskey recently? A.She passed the examination to become a fashion designer. B.She has raised may monarch butterflies to earn money. C.She has been praised online a lot for repairing the wing of a butterfly. D.A lot of her own photos have spread quickly online. 26. Why did Romy McCloskey repair the wing of a butterfly? A. To make it look nicer. B. To share its photos online. C. To make herself famous. D. To help it live longer. 27. What was the repaired wing like? A.It looked much better than before. B. It looked like cut fingernails. C.The two parts of it matched perfectly. D.It had a lot of black dots on it. C Ten minutes of gentle exercise can immediately change how certain parts of the brain communicate and coordinate (协调) with one another and improve memory function, according to an encouraging new study. The scientists invited 36 people of different ages to the lab and had them sit quietly on a fixed bicycle for 10 minutes or, on a separate visit, pedal the bicycle at a pace so gentle that it barely raised their heart rates. It also was short, lasting for only 10 minutes. Immediately after each session of the sitting or slow pedaling, the people completed a computerized memory test during which they would see a brief picture of, for instance, a tree, followed by a variety of other images and then a new image of either the same tree or a similar one. The people would press buttons to show whether they thought each image was new or the same as an earlier shot. The test is difficult, since many of the images closely resemble one another. It requires rapid, skillful scanning recent memories to decide whether a picture is new or known. Next, the scientists had each people repeat this process--riding or sitting on the bike for 10 minutes and then completing memory testing--but the testing now took place inside an M. R. I. machine(磁共振成像仪)that scanned the people's brains while they responded to the images. Then the researchers compared results. The effects of the exercise were clear. The people were better at remembering images after they had ridden the bike, especially when the images most closely resembled one another. In other words, the harder their memories had to do their best, the better they performed after the exercise. The M. R. I. scans showed that memory parts of each people's brain lit up at the same time with parts of the brain associated with learning, indicating that these physically separate parts of the brain were better connected now than when the people had not first exercised. 28.How did the researchers conduct the study? A.By filling up questionnaires. B.By interviewing many people. C.By comparing experiment data. D.By referring to historical reports. 29.Who might benefit most from the study result? A.The marketers promoting fixed bicycles. B.The young people crazy about body building. C.The white collars doing long-term mental work. D.The blue-collars doing heavy physical labor work. 30.Which of the following statements agrees with the study result? A.The light exercise is only good for young people. B.The more the exercise is, the better the brain works. C.The exercise can coordinate different parts of the body. D.The exercise has more positive effect when the brain works harder. 31.What can be the best title for the text? A.Even ten minutes' exercise may be good for the brain B.There is no need for humans doing exercise every day C.Only ten minutes' light exercise benefits the young most D.Exercise can change people's brains and minds in a long time D After many years of people unfairly thinking that they are unfriendly and distant, cats are finally getting a chance to correct this mistake thanks to science. According to Motherboard, a new study from Oregon State University found that pet cats often love their parents more than food. Dogs and turtles have taken part in similar studies, so Oregon State researchers decided it was time to show cats’ true colors as well. “Now more research is providing evidence of cats’ problem-solving abilities,” one researcher said. “ However, it is still common belief that cats are not especially sociable or trainable. This may be due, in part, to a lack of knowledge about what cats prefer, and knowledge about what cats are most willing to work for.” For the study, cats went through a series of tests. Fifty different cats were gathered to take part in the tests, some of which were pets, and others from shelters. All of the cats had no food, toys or human contact for a few hours. Later, the cats were shown human attention, food and toys to see what they missed most. Almost all of the cats desired human attention, with half of them choosing chin scratches(挠痒)over any of the other things, food included. Only 37% of he cats chose food first. The study also showed there was no big difference between the two kinds of cats. Whether they had a proper home or not, many cats desired love more than anything else. Of course, this study is not strict evidence that your cat is going to be a perfect loving angel. Based on the research, the researchers believe that cats tend to be kind, but this does not account for individual differences like breed(品种)or home life. 32.What did people use to think of cats? A.Cats are friendlier than dogs and turtles. B.Cats are the best choice to keep as pets. C.Cats love their owners more than anything else. D.Cats are less friendly and pay little attention to humans. 33.What does the underlined part mean? A.Cats of different colors have different characters. B.Researchers wanted to make the true character of cats known. C.People still need time to figure out why cats are different from dogs. D.Researchers were not certain about what the true character of cats is. 34.What did the study show? A.About half of the cats chose food first. B.Most cats preferred human attention. C. Cats from shelters were more interested in food. D.Pet cats were more interested in chin scratches from humans. 35.What is the main idea of the text? A. Cats need more attention from human beings. B. Cats are as friendly as dogs and turtles. C. Research shows that cats prefer human attention to food. D. Pet cats differ from other cats in many ways. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Porridge doesn't have a very tasty name, does it? ____36____ I'm here to try and convince you that porridge can be a delicious, convenient and very healthy way to start the day.
