We’d be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all. We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather. It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly the whole day. Day 4: Wednesday December 3 After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful. We’re staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It is about minus 20C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts ! Day 5: Thursday December 4 I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I’m told it’s a bit colder today, about minus 50C , but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill. Day 7: Saturday December 6 Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket). The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery (风景) changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there yesterday.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully ! 1. Lizzie sat outside wearing a jacket on_______. A. Tuesday B. Wednesday C. Thursday D. Saturday 2. What could stop Lizzie from leaving Stanley for Rothera? A. Strong winds. B. Thick clouds. C. Mountains of ice. D. Low temperatures. 3. How did Lizzie feel during her stay in the Antarctic? A. Afraid. B. Nervous. C. Amazed. D. Bored. 4. Rothera was unforgettable to me because _______. A. people walked around in T-shirts B. there was a special training course C. the weather was sometimes warm D. the scenery changed every day B It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad for the vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going back to school. Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Pay close attention so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom. You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day. But it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends! Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they’ll have mapped out a seating plan. It’s a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don’t forget. Here are a few final tips for a fantastic(奇异的) first day: Get enough sleep. Have a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Develop good work habits, like writing down your assignments(作业) and handing in your homework on time. Take your time with schoolwork. If you don’t understand something, ask the teacher. 5. In the second paragraph, the underlined phrase “kick off” most probably means “________”. A. jump over B. start C. talk about D. finish 6. Which of the following is TURE according to the passage? A. All students feel excited about a new term. B. All teachers let students pick their seats. C. New school worries do not last very long. D. Being hard-working helps make new friends. 7. If students have any questions, it’s suggested that they should ____________. A. turn to their teachers B. write them down C. ask their parents D. help with each other 8. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To provide students with some advice on starting a new school term. B. To encourage students to work harder in a new school term. C. To teach children the importance of starting school. D. To introduce a way to improve students’ learning ability. C I always feel sorry for world leaders busy dealing with fights between nations. When my three children were young, most days it was hard to keep my house from becoming a battlefield. It got worse as they grew older. Three years ago, Zack, then 16, couldn’t make it through a day without making his sisters, Alex 11 and Taryn 9, angry. My husband and I tried to be understanding the boy at such an age. We reasoned, punished, and left heartfelt notes on his bed about how he was hurting our family. His answer was “I say it because it’s true.” I even tried telling the girls to fight back. Bad idea. Now I had three children at war. Whatever I said to them, they paid no attention. When there was no way out, I told everything to my sister in an e-mail. She replied, “Don’t e-mail me. E-mail him.” Our son was online every day, mailing and talking with his friends. Maybe he would actually hear me this way. I didn’t say anything different, but e-mail just took the tension(紧张) away. There’d be no shouting or door banging. Zack wouldn’t feel under attack. Zack didn’t reply for days. When he finally did, his entire message was four small words. I smiled when I read them, “You’re right. I’m sorry.” The children still fought, of course, but Zack changed. Best of all, I now have a better way to talk with not one but three of them. I like it that they don’t tune me out as much as they used to. They like not having to listen to me shouting to them. Or as Alex says, “You’re so much nicer online.” All I know is that the house is quiet. But we’re talking. 9. What was the trouble before the online talk in the family? A. The writer failed to understand her daughters. B. The children couldn’t get along peacefully. C. The family found it difficult to keep the house clean. D. The parents were not willing to talk with their children. 10. The writer once tried to deal with her son’s problem by ________. A. talking with him about her pain B. telling him about the truth of the family C. telling her daughters to keep away from him D. encouraging her daughters to fight against him. 11. The writer e-mailed her sister ________. A. to tell her about the family problem B. hoping she’d e-mail the boy C. asking about child-raising D. to reduce the tension 12. The underlined phrase “tune me out” in the passage probably means “________”. A. quarrel with me B. get angry with me C. pay no attention to me D. keep me out of their rooms D You don't need to get in a time-traveling machine to see how technology will reshape our lives, such as the way we shop.Several new technologies that are to change your buying habits already exist.Let's see what's waiting for your future shopping.
