B Halloween is a holiday for all ages, but trick-or-treating is something traditionally done by kids. But, it’s a fun activity that anyone can experience. And at 91 years old, Mary “Baba” Spaeth was able to experience trick-or-treating for the very first time. On October 28, Spaeth’s daughter Christine Spaeth Richardson noticed that her mom seemed to be sad on the day. Richardson knew how much her mother loves to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and knew Halloween was coming up, so she decided to use the opportunity to take her mom trick-or-treating, too. The experience was new for Baba. She came to the United States in the 1940s from Croatia as a teenager, where trick-or-treating wasn’t a tradition. Her family participated in American holidays, such as Halloween, but the great-grandma never had the chance to go trick-or-treating herself until now. This time, she went around to friends’ and family’s houses for an early trick-or-treating period. It wasn’t a totally traditional trick-or-treating experience. Besides not taking place on October 31, Baba actually brought the treats. She gave out candy to the kids, and pizza and wine to the grown-ups. It took a couple of houses before Baba remembered to start off the conversation with “trick-or-treat.” She had a blast! She got so many hugs and kisses and pictures, too! She just couldn’t stop talking about tricking all her great grand babies! All the hugs and kisses from all her grandkids and great grandbabies made her so warm and happy! Never underestimate the power of a hug, a smile, a kiss. Most of all, a big tight feeling from a family group hug now is a TREAT! She’ll talk about it for a long time. 4. What was Christine’s purpose of taking Baba trick-or-treating? A. To meet Christine’s wish of trick-or-treating. B. To help Baba know the tradition. C. To cheer her mother up. D. To satisfy Baba’s grandchildren’s requirement. 5. Why had Baba never played trick-or-treating? A. Her motherland had no such a holiday. B. She left the U. S. at an early age. C. She hated the U. S. holidays like Halloween. D. She spent her adulthood without Halloween. 6. What can we know about Baba’s trick-or-treating? A. It was just a joke to her families and friends. B. It was not a real trick-or-treating in strict sense. C. Baba completely obeyed the game rules of trick-or-treating. D. Trick-or-treating was too boring for an old woman like Baba. 7. What does the underlined word “blast” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Sweet risk. B. Tiring time. C. Big shock. D. Happy experience. C Dolphins are much more intelligent than humans previously thought. Scientists have recently discovered that bottle-nosed dolphins can recognise themselves in the mirror—much like you and I can! When you see a zit (青春痘) on your face, what do you do? Go to the mirror time and again, and wonder what it is still doing there. Well, this is exactly what two male bottle-nosed dolphins, Presley and Tab, do as well. So, these lovable animals are not just sailors, friends, but they are also aware of their bodies-almost like humans! Presley and Tab stay in a pool with reflective glass walls in the New York Aquarium. Researchers noticed that when Presley and Tab saw their own reflections, unlike most other animals, they did not seem to think that they were looking at another dolphin. Dolphins are very social creatures, and are friendly with humans as well as their own kind. This got the researchers thinking. Perhaps the dolphins recognised their own images? So they decided to find it out. Using special ink, they made marks on different parts of the dolphins’ bodies, changing the place every week. Every time their bodies were marked, the dolphins made more trips to the mirror than usual. If the ink mark was on their belly (腹部), they would expose their belly to the mirror and look at it for a long time. Imagine the dolphins wondering—“Now where did that mark come from? Is it dangerous? I wonder how long it’s going to stay.” Till now, only the great apes have displayed this quality of recognising their images in the mirror. All other animals have failed this test. The researchers feel that these findings may increase human sensitivity towards dolphins, which are being hunted and killed in great numbers. Dolphin fins (鳍) are considered as deliciousness in several South-East Asian countries. 8. What is the scientists’ recent finding about dolphins? A. Dolphins are social creatures friendly with humans. B. Dolphins are not so intelligent as humans. C. Dolphins can make correct use of mirror. D. Dolphins have zits just like humans. 9. What do most animals regard their images in mirror as? A. The competitors of them. B. Their own reflections. C. Their natural enemies. D. Others of their kind. 10. Why did the dolphins look into mirror more according to the text? A. To look for their partners. B. To show their belly. C. To watch their own beauty. D. To concern for their safety. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Dolphins—sailors’ friends. B. Dolphins, reaction to the mirror. C. Dolphins are smarter than before. D. Dolphins are cleverer than humans. D China was a latecomer to space exploration, and in the movies, it has been a latecomer to science fiction, too. That is about to change. The country’s first blockbuster (大片) set in space, The Wandering Earth, opens Tuesday with great expectations that it will represent the dawning of a new age in Chinese filmmaking. The film also opens with the Lunar New Year, the beginning of an official, weeklong holiday that is traditionally a peak box-office period in China. It has a limited show in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The Wandering Earth, shown in 3-D, takes place in a distant future in which the sun is about to expand into a red giant and destroy the Earth. The approaching danger forces the world’s engineers to make a plan to move the planet to a new solar system using giant thrusters (推进器). Things go very badly when the Earth has to pass the Jupiter, setting off desperate disturbance to save humanity from ruin. The film comes as China reached a milestone in space: the landing of a probe (探测器) on the far side of the moon in January. Although decades behind Russia and the United States, China has now put astronauts in orbit and has ambitious plans to join—or even lead—a new age of space exploration. “I think there is a very close connection between Chinese cinema and the nation’s fortunes,” said Sha Dan, a leader at the China Film Archive, “When we have the ability to rescue our people abroad, we can make movies like Operation Red Sea. Only when China can enter the space age can we make works like The Wandering Earth.” The Wandering Earth takes for granted China’s central role in future space exploration, but it also has a vision of the international teamwork necessary to deal with the threats facing the planet, a theme that runs deeply through the film. 12. What does the author think of The Wandering Earth? A. It is a hit in the oversea film markets. B. It is a success in science-fiction films. C. It is the beginning of Chinese filmmaking. D. It is only a present for the Lunar New Year. 13. What causes the Earth to wander in space? A. A new solar system. B. A new planet like the Earth. C. The expanding sun in a distant future. D. A deadly disease for people on the Earth. 14. What mainly promotes Chinese filmmaking according to the text? A. China’s increasing overall national strength. B. Chinese filmmakers’ growing budgets. C. The growing confidence of Chinese directors. D. The increasingly experienced film technology. 15. What is reflected throughout The Wandering Earth? A. The importance of heroes. B. The threats from explorations, C. The nation’s power of China. D. The international cooperation. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 5 Professional Resume (简历) Writing Tips Whether you are searching for a job or you simply want to change careers, it is important to have a resume that sells you to potential employers.
