Unit 1 Great scientists Ⅰ.阅读理解 A [2020·洛阳市、许昌市第一次质量检测]Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental maths. I have only the unmemorable memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects. I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honour with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: One of the outstanding and essential qualities required is selfdiscipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only selfdiscipline but all training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you will get the best of both worlds. 1.What impressed the author deeply during his childhood? A.Wildlife. B.Music. C.Languages. D.Literature. 2.Why can't the author remember his relatives clearly? A.He didn't live with them for long. B.The family was extremely large. C.He was fully occupied with observing nature. D.He was too young when he lived with them. 3.According to the author, what personality should a born naturalist have first - 10 - of all? A.Being knowledgeable. B.Being selfdisciplined. C.Being full of ambition. D.Being full of enthusiasm. 4.Why does the author say he is a naturalist, not a scientist? A.He thinks he lacks some quality required of a scientist. B.He thinks he has much trouble doing mental arithmetic. C.He thinks he comes up with solutions in a most natural way. D.He thinks he just reads about other people's observations. B [2020·成都市高中毕业班摸底测试]Please take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal. Imagine telling someone you meet today what you're going to do. Imagine their congratulations and their high image of you. Doesn't it feel good to say it out loud? Don't you feel one step closer already? Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it. Any time you have a goal, there is some work that needs to be done to achieve it. Ideally, you would not be satisfied until you'd actually done the work. But when you tell someone your goal and he acknowledges (承认) it, psychologists have found it's called a “social_reality”. The mind is kind of tricked into a feeling that it's already done. And then, because you've felt that satisfaction, you're less motivated to do the actual and necessary hard work. This goes against the traditional wisdom that we should tell our friends our goals, right? In 1982, Peter Gollwitzer, a professor of psychology, wrote a whole book about this. And in 2009, he did some new tests that were published. It goes like this: 163 people across four separate tests — everyone wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment (承诺) to this goal to the room, and half didn't. Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work that would directly lead them towards their goal, but they were told that they could stop at any time. Finally those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal. But those who had announced it quit after only 33 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, - 10 - said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal. 5.What do the words “social reality” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Completion of the goal. B.Necessary hard work. C.People's acknowledgement. D.A sense of satisfaction. 6.What does Peter Gollwitzer try to tell us? A.Writing down the goal is very helpful. B.Achieving personal goal needs more time. C.Keeping the goal secret makes people work harder. D.Making the goal public makes people less satisfied. 7.How did Peter Gollwitzer prove his idea about people's goal? A.By giving figures. B.By giving examples. C.By making a survey. D.By making comparison tests. 8.What will probably happen if you tell your friends your goal? A.You will be more confident. B.You will not gain satisfaction. C.You are less likely to realize it. D.You'll be much more motivated. Ⅱ.完形填空 [2020·石家庄市质量检测]On a beautiful September evening, my 11yearold grandson, Josh, and his team were warming up for their first football game of the season. However, even an hour is of great valuable. We should make full use of your time to do useful things. As students, we mustn't study hard so as to serve for our society and our nation in the future. But it is pity that there are a lot of people who didn't know the importance of time. They spend their valuable time smoke and drinking. They don't realize that wasting time is the same as wasting a part of their life. Remember, don't put off which you can do today until tomorrow. His views are the direct result of the time he spent in Africa. The cyclone has resulted in many thousands of deaths. But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects. 根据第三段最后一句“But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects”可知,作者在童年时,印象深刻的是那些野生生物,故选A。 根据第三段最后一句“But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects”可推知,作者童年时期过于专注自然界而对周围的亲戚并不是很在意,所以没有深刻的印象,这与第四段第二句中的“I have a strong love of the natural world”呼应,故选C。 根据第四段前两句“I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations”可知,作者从小热爱自然界,而且这种热情使作者作了很多不同的调查,成了一个博物学家。 根据最后一段第一句“But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: One of the outstanding and essential qualities required is selfdiscipline, a quality I lack”可知,作者认为自己只是一个博物学家而不是一个科学家是因为自己缺乏成为科学家的必备素质,故选A。 根据画线词组后一句“The mind is kind of tricked into a feeling that it's already done”并结合画线词组所在句可推知,social reality在此处意为“目标的完成”。 根据最后一段最后两句“Finally those who kept their mouths shut ... to achieving their goal”可知,Peter Gollwitzer想告诉我们:没有说出目标的人工作时间更长,工作更努力。 根据第一段的内容,尤其是最后一句中的“because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it”可推知,如果你把目标告诉你的朋友,你就不太可能会实现目标,故选C。 设想 on average 平均来看 afterwards adv. Finally those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal.(Para.3) 分析:本句主句主语是those,谓语是worked, said。 who kept their mouths shut是who引导的定语从句,修饰先行词those; when asked afterwards是过去分词短语作时间状语;they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal是省略了that的宾语从句,作said的宾语。 分别地 on average平均 advantage n. 8.A 根据后一句“In the second half, they used Josh more often”可知,在下半场(比赛),他们更多地让Josh上场;据此可推知,在上半场Josh的比赛时间很少。 head for意为“朝…… 11.A 根据语境可知,只有一个人挡住了他的路——Josh. in sb.'s way为固定搭配,意为“妨碍,挡着…… 12.C 根据该句“Josh dove and __12__ that boy's legs with all his strength”可知,Josh扑过去,用尽全身力气抓住那个男孩的腿。take hold of意为“抓住”,故C项正确。 13.B 根据该句“The receiver dragged Josh a couple of yards and __13__ fell down”可知,接球者拖着Josh走了几码,最终摔倒了。 15.C 根据上文可知,Josh挽救了几个球;结合该句“They scored on the last play, but it wasn't Josh's __15__”可知,虽然对方得了分,但不是Josh的过错,故C项正确。 The time we have is limited. , even an hour is of great . We should make full use of time to do useful things. As students, we study hard so as to serve our society and our nation in the future. But it is pity that there are a lot of people who know the importance of time. They spend their valuable time and drinking. They don't realize that wasting time is the same as wasting a part of their life. Remember, don't put off you can do today until tomorrow. ②However改为Therefore。 be of+n.=be+adj. ④your改为our。 ⑤mustn't改为must。 ⑥删除for。 ⑦pity前加a。 It is a pity that ...“…… spend time doing sth. ⑩which改为what。
