McCoy, 36, could relate all too well. One of his few possessions, the sleeping bag he used in an abandoned house, had recently been stolen. Remembering how angered he’d been by his own loss, he resolved to return the purse to its owner. After traveling much of the day and finally approaching the address on the bill, he was stopped by a woman, who asked whether she could buy the purse found in the handbag. McCoy refused, saying he was searching for its owner. “But I am the owner,” the woman said. “That’s my purse.” A month earlier, Kaitlyn Smith, had woken up to find her apartment broken into and her purse stolen. Now she came across a tall, messy-looking man holding it tightly. She could instantly tell he wasn’t in good shape. Smith, amazed this stranger had gone to such great lengths to return her bag, asked whether there was anything she could do to help. “I’m a drug addict,” McCoy warned. “I don’t want to disturb your life.” Unafraid, Smith gave him her phone number, saying, “If you want to go to rehab (戒毒所), call me.” She then drove him back to his neighborhood and left, thinking that would be the end of it. Two days later, she got a call. Smith realized that McCoy was serious about getting better, so she dug into her savings account and bought McCoy a plane ticket to Florida. While there, he would call her to let her know how he was doing. After 28 days at a rehab program at Johns Hopkins Hospital, McCoy is drug-free. He lives at a residential recovery center in Baltimore, and a GoFundMe page set up by Smith has covered his rent, groceries, and incidentals. 4. What drove McCoy to look for the owner of the handbag? Pinch shrinks, unable to escape the giant’s shadow, hoping only to avoid being stepped underfoot. Pinch is far from the only victim of the Bavinsky legend. Speaking to Natty, his current wife—Pinch’s mother, and a potter whose insecurities provide the ripe target for his bossy (专横 的) personality—Bavinsky states,“You are a talent, my Natty, if you want to be. All it takes is a bit more charm.” Bear charms and bullies (霸凌), occupying physical and psychic space. Even his encouragement turns out to be another way to exercise control, proving how far those close to him have fallen short of his own achievement. “The Italian Teacher” unfolds a story over more than 60 years and across two continents. One of Mr Rachman’s gifts is his ability to describe a time and place in a few skillful strokes. He describes the social and economic shifts of Italy in the 1950s through the Bavinskys’ downstairs neighbors, “a family of workers who, for generations, carved traditional decorations but whose sons are now selling West German electrical devices”. Though Bear features in the novel, it is Pinch who commands the readers’ respect. Admittedly, he is wanting in confidence, filled with self-hatred, incapable of standing up to his bullying father. Like Natty, he is all damage and insecurity, a victim of Bear’s endless needs. Yet he turns out to be far more than the sum of his failures. He is compensated by his integrity and intelligence. His struggle to find meaning in the mess holds readers’ interest to the end. For all his faults, Pinch is gifted with wisdom, as is the author of this sad, funny and moving novel. 8. Who is “the giant” mentioned in Paragraph One? A. Tom. B. Bear. C. Natty. D. Pinch. 9. Bavinsky is described as follows except __________. A. vain B. secure C. bossy D. considerate 10. Why can Pinch earn respect according to the author? A. He was born into an artistic family, Father being a painter. B. He was honest and brilliant despite unfavorable conditions. C. He dared to fight against his father to find meaning in life. D. He went through the social and economic shifts of Italy. 11. What is the purpose of this text? A. To introduce a book. B. To explain an educational phenomenon. C. To recommend a writer . D. To bring back an era. B 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段“TOM RACHMAN’S latest novel records the life and legend of Bear Bavinsky, a painter of enormous appetites and all-consuming ego (自我), largely through the eyes of his son, Charles (known as Pinch). Pinch shrinks, unable to escape the giant’s shadow, hoping only to avoid being stepped underfoot.(TOM RACHMAN 的最新小说以 Bear Bavinsky 儿子 Charles (人称 Pinch)的视角来介绍极具吸引力和极度自负的画家 Bear Bavinsky 的生活和传 奇。 根据第四段“His struggle to find meaning in the mess holds readers’ interest to the end. For all his faults, Pinch is gifted with wisdom, as is the author of this sad, funny and moving novel.(他努力在混乱中寻找意义,一直吸引着读者的兴趣。 D For adventurous travellers, it is merely an embarrassing and annoying experience. But among poor people diarrhoea is a killer. So it is delightful to report that one of Asia’s poorest countries, Bangladesh, is making huge progress against this disease. Deaths from diarrhoea have fallen by 90% in the past two decades. Along with a far-reaching vaccination programme and steady economic growth, that has helped drive down the number of childhood deaths. In a country with more than 160m inhabitants, this represents a vast decline in human misery. And Bangladesh’s success holds lessons for other poor countries that are trying to beat back disease. The first is that cheap, simple, imperfect solutions are often good enough. In an ideal world, with limitless cash and universally good governance, everybody would drink chlorinated water out of taps and flush their sewage through pipes into treatment plants. In the real world, however, you can go a long way with half-measures. Bangladeshi villages are equipped with small pit latrines and tube wells for water. Most are built by the householders themselves, or by laborers whom they pay out of their own pockets. Although the tube wells are often alarmingly close to the latrines, that seems to be fine. Researchers have found that germs do not travel far underground. A second lesson is that hardware is not enough—the software of human behavior is just as important. Bangladesh’s neighbor, India, has funded and built a great many latrines. Despite that effort, many Indians continue to defecate in the open. Bangladesh’s government and charities have built latrines, too, but they have worked harder to stigmatize open defecation. Often they provide latrines for the poor and then persuade richer folk into following their example. A new, surprising, finding is that this works better than expecting people to copy their social superiors. 12. What is the text mainly about? A. Poverty relief. B. Modern life. C. Economic development. D. Public health. 13. What is the real picture in Bangladesh? A. Poor countries can draw lessons from its practice. B. Villagers pool their resources to improve their living conditions. C. The measures taken there are cost-effective and time-consuming. D. Sufficient cash plus efficient governance is vital in its steady economic growth. 14. Which is the least likely to happen to Bangladeshis? A. Following in the footsteps of the privileged when defecating. B. Looking down upon those who defecate in the open. C. Washing hands with water pumped from the tube wells. D. Getting vaccinated against diarrhoea during childhood. 15. What does the underlined world “stigmatize” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Demand a fine. B. Make it illegal. C. Make it immoral. D. Follow a routine. D 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第一段中“For adventurous travellers, it is merely an embarrassing and annoying experience. But among poor people diarrhoea is a killer. So it is delightful to report that one of Asia’s poorest countries, Bangladesh, is making huge progress against this disease. Deaths from diarrhoea have fallen by 90% in the past two decades.(对于喜欢冒险的旅行者来说,这只 是一种令人尴尬和烦恼的经历。 根据第三段中“Bangladeshi villages are equipped with small pit latrines and tube wells for water. Most are built by the householders themselves, or by laborers whom they pay out of their own pockets.(孟加拉国的村庄配备了小型坑式厕所和管井取水。 根据最后一段中“Bangladesh’s government and charities have built latrines, too, but they have worked harder to stigmatize open defecation. Often they provide latrines for the poor and then persuade richer folk into following their example. A new, surprising, finding is that this works better than expecting people to copy their social superiors.(孟加拉国政府和慈善机构 也修建了厕所,但他们更加努力地去打击露天排便。 故选 A。 根据画线词上文“Bangladesh’s government and charities have built latrines, too, but they have worked harder to”以及后文“open defecation”可知政府和慈善机构已经建立 了公共厕所,但是他们更致力于从人们的行为与道德感上对露天排便的人进行打击。 Secrets of People Who Stay Happy in Setbacks Bad things happen both personally and professionally. In the face of these setbacks, some people seem to fall apart, while others find ways to move forward and continue to get things done. Are there things you can do to be resilient? ___16___ Understand what you can control and what you can’t. The first is to be clear about what factors are under your control. ___17___ As you are occupied in those actions, you will find that you feel better about your work and will also be more productive. Surround yourself with people even if you don’t feel like it. Next, engage with other people. When you are sad or stressed, you often don’t want to be around others. ___18___ When you talk about what is making you sad or anxious, you often find that other people have had similar experiences that they can share. In addition, social connection is motivating and can help you to focus on tasks that need to be done. ___19___ Your negative thoughts will influence the interpretation you give to their actions that can cause you to interact with their anger or mistrust. They will notice your attitude and treat you accordingly. Similarly, when you interpret the actions of other people positively, you are more likely to create good interactions with others. ___20___ They will also help you feel better, because each success you have will boost your attitude toward the future. A. Look for an easy win. B. The answer to this question is yes—to a point. C. But there are several advantages to social engagement. D. Focus on actions you can take that will make your situation better. E. Go out of your way to give a positive interpretation of the actions of others. F. These strategies will help you to minimize the influence of bad events on your life. G. Instead, find something in your work life that you can complete quickly and successfully. B 17. D 18. C 19. E 20. 【16 题详解】 根据上文“Are there things you can do to be resilient?(你能做些什么来对挫折有适应力 吗?)” 【17 题详解】 根据上文“The first is to be clear about what factors are under your control.(首先要弄清楚哪些 因素在你的控制之下)”以及后文“As you are occupied in those actions, you will find that you feel better about your work and will also be more productive.(当你忙于这些事情时,你会发现你 对自己的工作感觉更好,也会更有效率)”可知,前一句说首先要明白什么因素在你的掌控 之下,后一句说当你专注于这些行动时,你会发现你对自己的工作感觉更好,也会更有效率。 【18 题详解】 根据上文“Surround yourself with people even if you don’t feel like it. Next, engage with other people. When you are sad or stressed, you often don’t want to be around others.(即使你不喜欢, 也要和人在一起。 当你感到悲伤或有压力时,你通常不想和别人在一 起)”以及后文“When you talk about what is making you sad or anxious, you often find that other people have had similar experiences that they can share.(当你谈论使你悲伤或焦虑的事情 时,你经常会发现其他人也有类似的经历,他们可以分享)”可知,前几句提出的方法是, surround yourself with people 并进一步 engage with other People,所以是社交。 【19 题详解】 结合后文“Your negative thoughts will influence the interpretation you give to their actions that can cause you to interact with their anger or mistrust. They will notice your attitude and treat you accordingly. Similarly, when you interpret the actions of other people positively, you are more likely to create good interactions with others.(你的消极思想会影响你对他们行为的理解,这会 导致你与他们的愤怒或不信任互动。 【20 题详解】 根据后文“They will also help you feel better, because each success you have will boost your attitude toward the future.(它们也会让你感觉更好,因为你的每一次成功都会提升你对未来的 态度)” 此处位于文章最后一段,起总结作用,且后文提到的 they 指的是之前提过的方法, 故本句是在说明上文提到的策略的积极作用,后文中 They 指代 F 选项中 These strategies。 “Look, Mum, look!” Tom had a hopeful smile. Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others. One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation. “Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mom asked calmly. “I guess…,” I murmured under my breath. “Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained. I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there? When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad. Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank. As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.___________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ __________________________ I returned to the shelter with Mom several times.__________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________ 【答案】As I was Looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. Her angelic face beamed, though, as I could see, there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. You wanna play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day. I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sore for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a profound time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer. 通读全文首先要解决好五个 W 和一个 H 的问题, 即理 清人物 who、地点 where、时间 when、事件 what、原因 why 及怎样发展 how。 2. I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. I felt sore for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us.
