After years of working at design companies, she needed a break from staring at a computer screen. So she asked her employer for a “sabbatical(休假)” and spent a month at Yosemite. “The experience was really refreshing for me," she says. "I returned to work with a better attitude, and finished all my work a bit differently. That sabbatical would eventually inspire Amble, a start-up that links creative professionals with the organizations that support national parks. Participants must first have permission from their bosses — this isn’t about quitting their jobs and jumping into the abyss(绝境). Selected applicants pay a fee that goes towards housing and program fees. Then they head for the wilderness. They spend about a third of their time working for a park. The rest of the time they spend enjoying in nature — hiking, climbing or simply relaxing. The word "sabbatical" has traditionally been associated with university professors, who are often given a half year or a year of teaching leave to write a book or do other career-related research. But career breaks have become more common outside colleges in recent years. Companies from REI to Intel offer employees leave every five or seven years. Some research suggests that this can be good for not just the employee, but the company, which benefits from a better-rested worker. One study showed that 87 percent of sabbatical-takers surveyed said they had “increased job confidence” after their leave, and a third said the sabbatical allowed them to stay in their job longer than they’d originally planned. To Kyu, Amble is a way of letting people scratch the “quit my job and backpack around Asia” itch(痒), something hard to reach to most people, who need some time off to recharge. For Kyu, her Yosemite sabbatical led her to take a second career break, to research and write a book "It was such a life-changing experience,” she says. "I worked at a computer 9 to 5, so it was really great to be able to drive across the land. We just get caught up in endless work, and we don't give ourselves space to think and create.” 4. What did Kyu think of her experience at Yosemite? A. It helped her find a better job. B. It destroyed her creativity. C. It gave her energy again. D. It was a waste of time. 5. What do we know about participants of Amble? A. They take enough time to have their body and mind rested. B. They fail to get permission to leave their companies. C. They will never return to their original jobs. D. They participate in Amble for free. 6. What does some research show? A. Fewer employees have confidence in their companies. B. Few companies offer the sabbatical to their employees. C. The sabbatical is more popular in colleges than in companies. D. The sabbatical is beneficial for both companies and employees. 7. What is Kyu’s attitude towards Amble? A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Unfavorable. D. Unconcerned. C On a cold morning in Austria, Ann Thompson, a top 16-year-old junior skier from the United States, was about to make her last practice run before lunch. As she sped down the hill on her skis, Thompson had a terrible accident. She fell and broke her spinal cord (脊椎). Thompson could no longer walk. Her skiing career was over. But her life as an athlete was not. “The accident didn’t change anything,” Thompson told Extra. “I’m the same person I was before.” After her accident, Thompson joined the Cruisers, a program for wheelchair athletes. “We brought her down to see what was happening,” said Don Chaffe, a Cruiser official. “At first, she said, ‘I can’t do that.’ Then she realized, ‘I can do that. I’m going to do that.’” Just over a year after her accident, Thompson was a top wheelchair athlete. Her sport was track and field. Later on, Thompson also played basketball. She had never played basketball before her accident. Now she was learning the sport in a wheelchair. Thompson also joined the U.S. Paralympic team. She won two gold medals, a silver medal, and two bronze medals. Soon, though, Thompson knew she had to get a job. She knew that training for track and field took too much time to allow her to work. So she tried out for the U.S. Paralympic women’s basketball team instead, and she was successful. Thompson played basketball at the Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia, in October,2000. Her husband, a U.S. team trainer, went to Australia with her. Thompson is a role model for millions of people with physical disabilities. Her message to kids is simple. “Try,” she said. “Really try. If you want to do something, give it your best effort. If you really want to do something, you can find a way to do it.” The kids who watch her practice see her as proof that anything is possible. 8. Which of the following sports did Ann Thompson compete in before sixteen? A. Skiing. B. Basketball. C. Track and field. D. Swimming. 9. What was the first thing that Thompson did after the accident? A. She decided to go to university. B. She learned to play basketball. C. She became a wheelchair athlete. D. She trained hard to recover. 10. It can be inferred from the passage that Thompson ____________. A. is going to become a coach some day B. wishes that she could ski one day C. is a strong-willed person D. will give speeches to kids as a role model 11. What can we learn from Thompson’s success? A. Union is strength. B. The process is as important as the result. C. Well begun is half done. D. Never give up. C Mothers who angrily tell off their children when they step out of line may be making behavior problems worse, according to a study. The study by the London School of Economic" (LSE) found that too much shouting and giving severe punishments were producing an opposite result. Ignoring naughty children also appeared to lead to a decrease in discipline standards. Research said that “reasoning with children” was more likely to have a positive impact on their behavior at a young age. But the study warned that it was difficult to determine a direct link between one parenting style and its outcome because of the effect of other causes. The latest study was based on an analysis of almost 19, 000 children. Data was collected from parents just before their children's first birthdays, and then when they turned three, five and seven. The study led by Dr Laure De Preux said the impact of various parenting styles on children. Researchers said, “Particularly excessive(过度的) shouting, punishing or ignoring a naughty child increase his behavior problems, and only reasoning doesn’t negatively impact the child’s behavior.” But the study also showed that a large number of other things such as economic conditions also impacted on children’s development The result suggested that wealthier families were able to create a whole environment that clearly benefited the child beyond simple effect of parenting. It said children in poor households in particular were affected by their mothers parenting styles. “In this group, behavior problem are reduced when mothers read to the naughty children, and increased when mothers shout at them, take treats away, or ignore them.” it said. It is the latest in a line of recent studies to assess the link between parenting and children’s behavior. Two years ago, a report commissioned(委托) by the department for Education found that severe and inconsistent discipline in the home was bringing up a generation of young children with anger management problems, poor attention and low levels of learning ability. 12.The underlined part “step out of line” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______. A. confidence B. behave badly B. C. become excited D.achieve success 13.Which may help solve children’s behavior problems? A. Punishing them lightly. B. Talking with them reasonably. C. Ignoring them once in a while. D. Exercising strict discipline over them. 14.What did the research focus on? A. How mothers looked at their parenting role. B. Why many children had behavior problems . C. How parenting styles affected children’s development. D. Why parents gave their children severe punishments. 15.What do we learn about the report in the last paragraph? A. Its findings go against those of the LSE's study. B. Its subject is similar to that of the LSE’s study. C. It shows the benefits of strict discipline. D. It has discovered new problems of children. 第二节 七选五阅读 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When parents are unable to raise their children, grandparents are often the ones who step in. Raising a grandkid brings many rewards, including developing a deeper relationship and keeping the family together. 16 No matter how much you love your grandkids, taking them into your home requires lots of preparation. But with right methods, you can make a real difference in the lives of your grandchildren. You probably aren’t expecting to raise kids again at this stage of life. Sometimes, the physical, emotional (感情的), and financial demands may make you feel very tired. 17 Although you may not have enough energy as before, you do have the wisdom that only comes with experience. 18 Unlike first-time parents, you’ve done this before and learned from your mistakes. Remember that you do have a lot to offer! Communicating openly and honestly with your grandchildren is one of the best things you can do to help them deal with their new situation. 19 In this difficult time, they need an adult to share their questions, concerns, and feelings with. You should encourage them to talk about their feelings, both good and bad. Try to listen without judging their feelings.
