1 Module 3 My First Ride on a Train Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading-Pre-reading In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird’s eye view of the world — or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get inyour way. When you travel by car or train an unclear image (影像) of the countryside constantly smears (使模糊不清) the windows. Car drivers, in particular, are forever obsessed (痴迷) with the urge to go on and on: they never want to stop. Is it the attractiveness of the great motorways, or what? And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mention. It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song: “I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.” The typical twentiethcentury traveller is the man who always says “I’ve been there”. If you mention the remotest and most evocative (唤起 记忆的) places, someone is sure to say “I’ve been there” meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.” For the traveller on foot, on the other hand, travelling and arriving is one 2 and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical weariness (疲惫). He knows that sound. A satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travellers. In this module I’ll tell you in detail about my first ride on a train. The train was wonderful and the food was great. We ate great meals cooked by experts⑨! For the first few hundred kilometres of the journey⑩, the scenery⑪ was very colourful. There were fields and the soil⑫ was dark red. After that, it was desert⑬. The sun shone⑭, there was no wind and there were no clouds in the sky. Suddenly, it looked like⑮ a place from another time. We saw abandoned farms which were built more than a hundred years ago⑯. The train was comfortable and the people were nice. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons. Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens (使扩大) our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations (文明), cultures, customs and ideas. Through history, most people travelled because of necessity (必要性) — not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it.In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity (好奇 心).They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon (地平线).Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures. So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us.There is no doubt that we can get much from it. 1.The underlined word “expand” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “______”. 8 A.widen B.protect C.lose D.decide 解析:选 A 词义猜测题。 2.According to the passage, in the past most people travelled ______. A nickname can also be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames. Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city’s initials (首字 母), LA.It is also called “The City of Angels” because Los Angeles means “the angels” in Spanish. Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is “City of Flowers and Sunshine”. New York is called “The Big Apple”. So Los Angeles is sometimes called “The Big Orange” because of the fruit that grows in that city’ s warm climate. The American motion picture (电影) and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called “The Entertainment Capital of the World”.Many films are made in the area of Los Angeles called Hollywood. Millions of people visit the area. No trip to Los Angeles is completely without seeing the word “Hollywood” spelled out in huge letters on a hillside. Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called “Tinseltown”.This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry. Another nickname for Los Angeles is “LaLa Land”, using the first letters of Los and Angeles. This means a place that is fun and not serious, and maybe even out_of_touch_with_reality. The city of Los Angeles is part of Los Angeles County. There are many smaller cities in the county. Beverly Hills, with its rich people, is one of them. So is Pasadena, with its Rose Parade each New Year’s Day. A good place for watching unusuallooking people is Venice, an area on the west side of Los Angeles. A system of waterways designed after the Italian city of Venice has been built there. 9.What’s the purpose of the first paragraph? 11 A.To tell us what a nickname is. D.The Big Apple. 根据第三段第三句“New York is called ‘The Big Apple’.” 11.Why is Los Angeles called “The Entertainment Capital of the World”? A.Because Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. B.Because many movie stars live in Los Angeles. C.Because there are many smaller cities in the county. D.Because the American motion picture and television industries are there. D。 12.The underlined part “out of touch with reality” in Paragraph 6 can probably be replaced by “______”. A.real B.false C.fantastic D.practical 解析:选 C 词义猜测题。根据前面的“This means a place that is fun and not serious”并结合短语本身的字面意思可推断,该短语指的是“不切实际的,幻想中的”, 与 fantastic 意思相近。故选 C。 Ⅱ. Reasons you should travel while you’re young I have been very lucky to travel around the world while still young.
