At this time, a boy approached me. He stood right before me, and said with great excitement, "Look what I found!"‎ In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals(花瓣)all worn. Wanting him to take his flower and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then turned to the other side.‎ But instead of leaving, he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared, “It really smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That’s why I picked it. Here, it's for you.”‎ The flower before me was dying or dead. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, Just what I need.‎ But instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it in mid-air. It was then that I noticed that the boy was blind. ‎ I heard my voice quiver(轻微颤抖) and at the same time my tears shone like the sun. As I thanked him for picking the very best one, he smiled and said, “you're welcome.” And then he ran off to play, unaware of the impact he’d had on me.‎ I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old tree. Perhaps from his heart, he’d been blessed with true sight.‎ Through the eyes of the blind boy, I could see the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I had been blind. From now on I vowed to see beauty and appreciate every second that's mine. Then I held the flower up to my nose and breathed its fragrance and smiled as that young boy. ‎ ‎21. He really doesn’t understand why more people aren’t accepting them. “I probably spend about $ 7 a day on petrol,” the taxi driver told news. com. au. In his previous conventional vehicle Terrence said he was spending up to $ 30 a day on petrol, meaning he saves almost $ 6000 every year.‎ The Toyota spokesman said this was quite a high saving and official tests estimate (估计) an average driver would only save about 33 percent off their current bill. This means a driver paying $ 30 a day on petrol would see their bill drop to about $ 20 using the hybrid. “A taxi driver that drives in built-up areas and spends little time on highways will notice a higher fuel saving,” he said. “Low speeds allow the electric motors to be used more and the petrol engine used less.”‎ While some people are skeptical about how reliable hybrids are, Terrence said he had never run out of power. His Camry cost about $ 34,000 and so after five years, it’s nearly paid for itself. “For cab drivers, it’s a real advantage because of the cost-effectiveness,” he said. Terrence has no complaints about the car. “I love it, the calm and quietness of it, the simplicity of it—you just jump in and go. The maintenance(保养)is really low. But the only difficulty is finding someone to service the car as there are not many experienced mechanics(机修工).”‎ Terrence said it’s “extraordinary” that more drivers aren’t buying more hybrid electric ‎ vehicles and that governments are not encouraging this more. “I think people have a view that you have to plug it in, which is not true. A lack of information about the cars may be stopping people from taking the plunge. It’s not promoted at all for the public to understand—it’s simplifying the actual owning of a car—you don’t have to do so many things to own it and run it, it’s just so much simpler. Why wouldn’t the government promote such a thing?”‎ ‎24. How much does an average driver save each day by driving a hybrid, according to the Toyota spokesman?‎ ‎ A. $30. B. $20. C. $10. D. $7.‎ ‎25. When saying “extraordinary”, Terrence thinks it is ________‎ ‎ A. understandable B. wonderful C. doubtful D. unbelievable ‎ ‎26. What does Terrence think prevent the popularity of hybrid cars?‎ ‎ A. The difficulty in servicing the car. B. The restriction of the government.‎ ‎ C. The lack of information about HEV. D. The inconvenience with charging the car. ‎ C Facial Recall Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming. Pressure to learn people’s names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue—but privacy experts recommend proceeding with caution.‎ The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces via smartphone cameras and facial recognition, potentially eliminating the need for formal introductions. “It breaks down these social barriers we all have in terms of initiating the protocol to meet somebody,” says Barry Sandrew, whose start-up, also called SocialRecall, created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 1,000 people.‎ After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, a prospective user is asked to take two selfies and sign in via social media. At the event the app is active within a previously defined geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee’s face, the app identifies the individual, displays the person’s name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have consented to participate. And the app’s creators say it automatically wipes users’ data after an event. ‎ Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence at ‎ Ryerson University in Toronto, commends the app’s creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that “there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you.”‎ The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or “face blindness,” a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. (Sandrew, who has prosopagnosia himself, notes that the app has not yet been tested on others with the condition.) To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone’s face, from either the smartphone’s camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user’s phone, according to the team behind the app. ‎ Jason Schultz, a professor of clinical law at New York University, who was not involved with the app’s creation, remains cautious: “The cost to everyone whom you are surveilling with this app is very, very high, and I don’t think it respects the consent politics involved with capturing people’s images.”‎ ‎27. Why do lots of privacy experts not advocate the facial-recognition app?‎ A. Because it is only active within a defined area.‎ B. Because the technology behind is still not mature.‎ C. Because the app has not been tested on a large scale.‎ D. Because users’ personal information might be misused.‎ ‎28. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ______.‎ A. how the app works B. how the app was created C. what makes the app popular D. what people can do with the app ‎29. SocialRecall helps people with prosopagnosia by ________.‎ A. giving names to the photos kept in their smartphones B. collecting information previously entered in the phone C. providing the information of a person when they first meet D. showing the person’s information when it spots a stored face ‎30. What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage?‎ A. It may put people’s privacy at risk. ‎ B. It has caused unintended consequences.‎ C. It can prevent some communication disorders.‎ D. It is praised by users for its protective measures.‎ 第二节 七选五(共 5 小题,每小题 2分,满分 10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ You may have grown up living with lots of siblings, or this may be your first time sharing your living space with someone else. ____31____ Follow these tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the year (or even years)!‎ Be clear about your expectations from the beginning. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom’s “grown up” girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.‎ It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered(撒) presents, she would sigh and warn us, “There won’t be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed.” Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase “giving is better than receiving,” but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I couldn’t get to sleep on Christmas Eve.‎ On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ‎ ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.‎ ‎“Here’s another one for you,” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom’s. A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother’s handwriting.‎ ‎“Mom, I can’t…”‎ 注意:‎ ‎1. ‎ Paragraph 1: ‎ I was stopped by my mother’s eager, joyful look. _______________________________________________________________________________‎ Paragraph 2: ‎ I have always remembered that Christmas fondly._________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎【参考答案】‎ ‎1-20 CBABC BACBC BCCAA BBCAA ‎ ‎21-23 BDA 24-26 CDC ‎ ‎27-30 DADA    31-35 GFEBC 36-40 CDABC ‎ ‎41-45 BDDAC 46-50 CDABD 51-55 ACBAB ‎56. yourself 57. to 58. whatever 59. embarrassed 60. exchanging ‎61. an 62. competitions 63. Without you, I would not go further confidently and bravely.Your love can never be repaid but I am determined to work hard and never make you disappointed.‎ I love you, Father(要点四)!‎ Yours,‎ Li Hua 读后续写 Paragraph 1: ‎ I was stopped by my mother’s eager, joyful look. “Let’s see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it.” It was a blow dryer. Though this may seem but a simple gift, to me it was so much more. Being an eleven-year-old girl, I was stunned. In my world, where receiving largely outweighed giving, my mom’s act of selflessness was incomprehensible. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to give up her Christmas so I could have a few more presents.‎ Paragraph 2: ‎ I have always remembered that Christmas fondly. It had such an impact on me. As an adult with children in my life whom I adore, I can now understand my mom’s actions. I see, actually, she was not “giving up her Christmas” as I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy in her ‎ Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My mom’s simple act meant the world to me. Whenever I look back on my mom’s giving, I will choose to give in my life. ‎
