It is the capital and most populous (人口稠密) city in the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” due to its convenient system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam. Must-See Attractions Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers and coffee shops. Don’t miss the Dam Square and the areas around Spui and Nieuwmarkt. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. Transportation Travelers should be aware that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in the world. You can catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which has many connecting routes. Cycling is very popular here, and it’s easy to find cheap bike rentals around town. Recommended Restaurants Amsterdam is a top destination for foodies (美食家), so it is difficult to narrow down your dining choices. Here are a couple of our favorites. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was drawing to a close. When his heart problems led to operation, Jill went through it successfully, and a full recovery was expected. Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly. Jill was rushed back to operation, but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before his 48th birthday. Dr. Bruce Smaller, a psychologist, had had many conversations with him, and the more he learned, the stranger he realized Jill’s case was. When Jill was a child, his father, a teacher, suffered a heart attack and stayed home to recover. One morning Jill asked his father to look over his homework, promising to come home from school at noon to pick it up. His father agreed, but when Jill returned his father had died. Jill’s father was 48. “I think all his life Jill believed he killed his father,” Dr. Smaller says. “He felt that if he had not asked him to look at his homework, his father would have lived. Jill had been troubled by the idea. The operation was the trial (判决) he had expected for forty years.” Smaller believes that Jill willed himself not to live to the age of 48. Jill’s case shows the powerful role that attitude plays on physical health, and that childhood experiences produce far-reaching effects on the health of grown-ups. Although most cases are less direct than Jill’s, studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart disease and mental illness. 25. Jill was sent back to operation because _______. A. the first one wasn’t well performed B. he expected a full recovery C. his life was drawing to a close D. his heart didn’t work well 26. What made Dr. Smaller feel strange about Jill’s case? A. Jill died at a young age. B. Jill died on the operating table. C. Both Jill and his father died of the same disease. D. Jill’s death is closely connected with his father’s. 27. From Smaller’s words, we can infer that _______. A. Jill’s father cared little about his study B. Smaller agreed that Jill did kill his father C. Jill thought he would be punished some day D. Smaller believed Jill wouldn’t live to the age of 48 28. Which of the following could have strong effects on one’s physical health according to the text? a. One’s genes. b. One’s life in childhood. c. One’s physical education. d. The date of one’s birthday. e. The opinions one has about something. A. a, b, d B. a, b, e C. a, c, e D. b, c, d C In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh (法老) treated the poor message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off. Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light-heartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh, boy, bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it's going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, for his smile. Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of head-cutting! It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered. Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and big winners do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising a patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he didn’t get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you’re tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toast beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as traveler or diner want to land your fist (拳头) right on their unsympathetic faces. Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh, that's all right. I’ll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded (被轰炸的) person is sure to have. 29. In the writer's opinion, his neighbor was . A. friendly B. warm-hearted C. not considerate D. not helpful 30. From Paragraph 3, we learn that the writer . A. was mad at the sales agent B. was reminded of the cruel pharaoh C. wished that the sales agent would have had dreams D. dreamed of cutting the sales agent’s head that night 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. Delivering bad news properly is important in communication. B. Helping others sincerely is the key to business success. C. Receiving bad news requires great courage. D. Learning ancient traditions can be useful. D Many leading AI researchers think that in a matter of decades, artificial intelligence will be able to do not merely some of our jobs, but all of our jobs, forever transforming life on Earth. The reason why many regard this as science fiction is that we’ve traditionally thought of intelligence as something mysterious that can only exist in biological organisms, especially humans. But such an idea is unscientific. From my point of view as a physicist and AI researcher, intelligence is simply a certain kind of information-processing performed by elementary particles (基本粒子) moving around, and there is no law of physics that says one can’t build machines more intelligent than us in all ways. This suggests that we’ve only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg and that there is an amazing potential to unlock the full intelligence that is potential in nature and use it to help humanity. If we get it right, the upside is huge. Since everything we love about civilization is the product of intelligence, amplifying (扩大) our own intelligence with AI has the potential to solve tomorrow’s toughest problems. For example, why risk our loved ones dying in traffic accidents that self-driving cars could prevent or dying of cancers that AI might help us find cures for? Why not increase productivity through automation (自动化) and use AI to accelerate our research and development of affordable sustainable (可持续的) energy? I’m optimistic that we can develop rapidly with advanced AI as long as we win the race between the growing power of our technology and the knowledge with which we manage it. But this requires giving up our outdated concept of learning form mistakes. That helped us win the race with less powerful technology: We messed up with fire and then invented fire extinguishers (灭火器), and we messed up with cars and then invented seat belts. However, it’s an awful idea for more powerful technologies, such as nuclear weapons or superintelligent AI—where even a single mistake is unacceptable and we need to get things right the first time. 32. How do many people feel about leading AI researchers’ predictions? A. Worried. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed. 33. What does the author think of intelligence? A. We know little about it. B. It belongs to human beings. C. It is too difficult to understand. D. We have nothing more to discover. 34. What does the underlined word “upside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Cost. B. Risk. C. Quantity. D. Advantage. 35. What’s important for us in the race between people and technology? A. Learning from failure. B. Increasing our intelligence. C. Avoiding making mistakes. D. Being more optimistic. E 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Tips to Increase Your Productivity Want to get more done in your day? Of course you do. 36 The good news is that everyone can increase the amount of task they complete in a day. Here are some tips to help you have a more productive day. Make a plan for your day. Make sure you know how you want your day to go in advance, even before you start. 37 To work best, create the next day’s plan the night before so that every morning you spend time performing, not planning. Break large tasks down into bits achieved easily. Do you have a large project that’s just so big that you keep putting it off? Or maybe you’re just unsure of where to begin, so you put it off. 38 Therefore, you will feel a sense of achievement as you check the items of your list. Always set your priorities (优先事项). 39 Figure out what must be done, do that first and rank the rest of your work according to importance. If you don’t get to the items at the end of your list, it won’t be a big problem, and you can do them another time. 40 If you are the most productive in the morning, that’s when you should hit it hard and do as much as you can. If you work better in the afternoon, take care of some things like emails in the morning and then accomplish the important projects in the afternoon. Keep on top of your work habits, and you’ll be more productive. A. Reward yourself if you are productive. B. Be aware of when you are the most productive. C. This can provide you a roadmap for the day. D. It’s tough to meet depressed people who are productive. E. It’s important to accomplish the most important tasks first. F. A good way is to break the project down into more manageable ones. G. To stay competitive in any industry, you need to improve your productivity. 第二节 完形填空(共20小题,每小题1分,共20分) 认真阅读下面短文, 从短文后各题所给的 A, B, C, D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项, 并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。 There are times when people are so tired that they fall asleep almost anywhere. W: But Sunday is the same as Saturday. If you don’t mind, that’s OK. M: Maybe it will be better. The most important thing is that I can have a day to relax after a week's work. W: I see. We will go the day after tomorrow. M: By the way, what kind of stores do we need to go? W: I want to buy some clothes in clothing stores. When we are going back, go to the butcher’s shop and buy some chicken. M: (9) Let’s also go to the jewelry store to buy a necklace. I want to buy one for you as your birthday present. W: Thank you, darling. Text 8 W: Hello, Pasadena Hotel. How may I direct your call? M: I’d like to speak to someone about reservations. W: I can help you with that. When are you arriving? M: (10) We’ll be arriving on May 12th, and I’d like to reserve the presidential suite. W: Oh, I’m sorry, sir. (11) I only handle bookings for our standard rooms. The person you need to speak with is Tony Parker. He makes all the arrangements for our special accounts. Unfortunately, he’s not here right now. Can I take down your name and number and have him get back to you? M: When do you expect him back? W: He’ll be out all afternoon, so he might not be able to return your call until tomorrow. Will that be all right? M: Yes, I suppose. My name is Sam Darcy. He can contact me at 6608-4332. W: Okay, Mr. Darcy, and your phone number is 6608-4332. (12) I’ll have Tony call you first thing tomorrow morning. Text 9 M: Miss, may I help you? W: Yes, (13) I just wondered why the price between the ninth and tenth floor is so different. M: (13) It’s because of the view. W: Oh! I see. Can you tell me something about the car-park space? M: (14) There are a total of one hundred and sixty parking spaces on the second and third floor, in which twenty are for visitors and the rest are for residents. W: Any other facilities? M: (15) Sure, on the fourth floor is a recreation quarter. There are two swimming pools. One is Olympic-standard size and the other one is for children. (16) Also, there is a gym for resident members only. W: How about the price and payment methods? M: It’s all written on the brochure price list. I believe there will be one right for you. Please hurry up because almost half of units have already gone. W: Thank you. I think I have to talk to the bank representatives. Thank you for your help. M: You’re welcome. Text 10 M: OK everyone, now I need to say a few things about our visit to Staunton Theater next Tuesday. (17)You need to be here at school at 5:50.We’ll meet at the back gate because the bus can’t stop at the front one. We can’t leave any later than 6:00, as the play starts at 7:30. We’re seeing a very interesting play called The Party by Andrew McVitie. It’s a comedy about a birthday celebration. His works can be difficult to understand (18) so you need to read the play in advance. There is a copy for everyone which you can pick up from the school secretary. Do that as soon as you can. The full price of the theater tickets is $18, but you’re all lucky, (19) because you only have to pay $15 each. Could you let me have this money before Tuesday, please, and $2 for the bus? Now, a lot of you have suggested going somewhere together afterwards. Well, the bus driver is willing to come back a bit later, but there isn't time for a big meal, (20) so we’ll go to a café nearby for an ice cream and a coffee. 查看更多
