But for Andrew, a herder at a farm in Zimbabwe, it's not a problem. Once he spots Toro, he knows the rest of the herd is nearby. That's because Toro isn't an ordinary member of the herd. He's a giraffe. In hot weather, cattle rest in the shade under his belly. And because of his height, Toro can spot lions long before they come close to the herd.‎ Toro's unusual situation came about after his mother was killed by lions. Toro survived the attack, but he was left with no one to protect him or give him milk. About two days later, some herders spotted and rescued him. With the permission of the Department of Wildlife, the herders moved Toro to Andrew's farm. Since giraffes and cattle are both plant-eating animals that live in groups, their behaviors are much the same. Toro was accepted into the herd and wandered among the cattle as they ate grass.‎ Toro doesn't always behave like the other members of his new herd. Like many kinds of animals, cattle compete for dominance(支配). Standing more than 13 feet tall, Toro is more than three times taller than the biggest bull. But Toro never tries to be "the boss". "He is very used to their company," Andrew said. When the herd enters the kraal(家畜栏), the cows and bulls push each other. "But thanks to his height, Toro does not need to join the mess," said Andrew.‎ When asked if Toro would ever be returned to the wild, Munetsi, an officer of the Department of Wildlife said no. "In the wild, he would find it difficult to be accepted into another herd or defend himself from predators(猎食者)," he added. "He seems very much at home and is respected by the cattle."‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(1)What was Toro like when the herders found him?‎ A. He was seriously ill. B. He was left alone. C. He was lost in the bush. D. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. Researchers from McMaster University in Canada studied the effects of junk food ads. They found that kids made unhealthy food and drink choices as quickly as 30 minutes after seeing the ads. Experts worry that exposure to these ads can have a negative effect on kids' health.‎ ‎"There is too much unhealthy food advertising out there," says Behnam Sadeghirad, one of the researchers who led the study. "This is dangerous for younger children."‎ Food ads are everywhere, from TV and the Internet to radio and billboards. Companies want to make sure you know about their products. They spend nearly $1.8 billion a year on food ads aimed at kids, according to a recent report.‎ It's especially hard to escape from ads on TV. An earlier research found that kids watched nearly 12 food ads on TV each day. Most of these ads weren't for healthy foods. In fact, on average, kids saw only one ad per week for fruits and vegetables. Instead, most of the ads were for fast food, candy and sugary drinks.‎ Jennifer Harris, a professor at the University of Connecticut who studies food ads aimed at kids, says this is a big part of the problem. "Unhealthy foods are not things we should be encouraging kids to eat more often," Harris says. "But unfortunately those are the products being advertised to them the most."‎ The study by McMaster University shows that the overload(过量)of junk food ads is affecting what foods kids choose to eat. One concern is that seeing these ads could lead to an increase in cases of childhood overweight. Actually, over one-third of kids and teens in the US are overweight.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(1)Why are experts worried about junk food ads?‎ A.They contain too much false information.‎ B.They can be seen everywhere.‎ C.They have negative effects on kids' behavior.‎ D.They can quickly affect kids' food choices.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(2)What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 5 refer to?‎ A.Junk food's effect on kids.‎ B.Too much junk food advertising.‎ C.Time spent on watching TV.‎ D.Money spent on food ads aimed at kids.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(3)What Jennifer Harris said suggests that ________.‎ A.junk food producers are to blame B.more interesting programs should be offered to kids C.there shouldn't be too many ads for junk food D.kids tend to be overweight due to junk food ads ‎ ‎ ‎(4)Which of the following might be the best title for the text?‎ A.Attack of the Junk Food Ads B.Getting Wise to Ads C.Tricks of the Fast Food Ads D.Childhood Overweight ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎4. ‎ America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.‎ Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily. Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own 第13页 共14页 ◎ 第14页 共14页 ‎ hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.‎ For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(1)The writer of this passage must be ________.‎ A.a student B.a professor C.an American D.a Chinese ‎ ‎ ‎(2)Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A.Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.‎ B.Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.‎ C.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.‎ D.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(3)From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ________.‎ A.treated to dinner in a restaurant B.treated hospitably at his home C.warmly welcomed at the airport D.offered a ride to his home ‎ ‎ ‎(4)A suitable title for this passage would probably be "________".‎ A.Americans' and Chinese's views of friendships B.Americans' hospitality C.Friendships between Chinese D.Friendships between Americans 二、七选五 ‎ ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ According to the UN's World Happiness Report for 2016, Denmark is officially the happiest country on Earth. Here is a list of reasons behind the happiness:‎ A different view of money ‎ Danes tend not to be concerned with "keeping up with the Joneses".(1)________.
