Here are 5 that helped define the national character. Most from a century or so ago, they still entertain, teach and inspire American people. Moby-Dick by Herman Melville First published in 1851, the book tells the adventure stories of Captain Ahab and his continuous hunting for the white whale and draws us into a universe full of fascinating characters and stories. The Education of Henry Adams by Henry Adams Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1918, the book provides insight into Adams’ family, including his experience as a private secretary to his father, minister to England during the American Civil War. Leaves of Grass by Walt Whiteman When Whiteman published Leaves of Grass in 1855, he wanted to define the American experience— sing for the new country in a new voice, reflecting the great changes in the American literary world that had taken place during his lifetime. Poems by Emily Dickinson An enthusiastic poet whose works have had a considerable influence on modern poetry, Dickinson’s frequent use of dashes(破折号), sporadic(零星的)capitalization of nouns, and unusual metaphors(隐喻) has contributed to her reputation as one of the most innovative poets of the 19th-century American literature. The song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow First published in 1855, this is Longfellow’s most popular and most recognized poem, showing the heroic life and death of a magic American Indian sent by the Great Spirit to guide the nations in the ways of peace. 56. If you want to learn about a magic American Indian, you can choose ________. A. Moby-Dick B. Leaves of Grass C. Poems D. The song of Hiawatha 57. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Of the five works, four are poems. B. Walt Whiteman was an enthusiastic poet and singer. C. The Education of Henry Adams is a non-fiction book. D. Of the five books, Moby-Dick was published last. B Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is. However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway. Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into. 58. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______. A. the meaning of success B. the reasons for success C. the standards of success D. the importance of success 59. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______. A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work C. it takes a lot of time to succeed D. one gives up his work easily 60. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent. B. Successful people like to show their great skills. C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life. D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success. 61. What is the main theme of the passage? A. Having a goal is vital to success. B. Being good is different from being great. C. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success. D. One cannot succeed without time and practice. C A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package: What food might it contain? He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap! Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse declared the warning, “There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.” The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me, I cannot be bothered by it.” The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house.” “I am so sorry, Mr Mouse,” sympathized the pig, “but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers.” The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, “A mouse trap, am I in grave danger, huh?” So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knew to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. His wife’s sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat. So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk. 62. We may infer that the passage is most probably a ______. A. fairy tale B. fable C. science fiction D. news report 63. We could see from the passage that the mouse was ______. A. kind and warm-hearted B. well-informed C. good at cheating others D. foolish and rude 64. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The pig was comparatively less friendly than the others in the farmyard. B. The mouse trap that the mouse discovered was not a practical one. C. The farmer and his wife trapped an evil snake that night. D. The farmer’s family was in fact poor and they had no friends. 65. The underlined word “ingredient” (Paragraph 7) refers to ______ A. the mouse B. the pig C. the snake D. the chicken 66. What can we learn from the story? A. Better safe than sorry. B. Traps are usually well disguised. C. To help others is just to save you. D. To keep the balance of nature is the duty of us all. D Two things changed my life: my mother and a white plastic bike basket. I have thought long and hard about it and it’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a silly bicycle accessory into a life lesson I carry with me today. My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how she did it. Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what another kid did, we’d hear something like, “I don’t care what so-and-so got for his birthday, you are not getting a TV in your room, a car for your birthday or a sweet party.” We had to earn our allowance(零花钱)by doing chores around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. Like the two little girls growing up at the White House, we made our own beds (no one left the house until that was done) and picked up after ourselves. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced. It was summer and one day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed---and there it was in the window, white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers, the basket winked at me and I knew---I knew---I had to have it. “It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her, “What a neat basket.” I tried to hold off at first, I played it cool for a short while. But then I guess I couldn’t stand it any longer: “Mom, please can I please, please get it? I’ll do extra chores for as long as you say, I’ll do anything, but I need that basket, I love that basket. Please, Mom. Please?” I was desperate. “You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believes was the coolest thing ever, “If you save up you could buy this yourself.” “By the time I make enough it’ll be gone!” “Maybe Roger here could hold it for you,” she smiled at Roger, the bike guy. “He can’t hold it for that long, Mom. Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, Please?” “There might be another way,” she said. And so our paying plan unfolded. My mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some hiding place I couldn’t find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing saving increased by extra work here and there (washing the car, helping my mother make dinner, delivering or collecting things on my bike that already looked naked without the basket in front). And then, weeks later, I counted, re-counted and jumped for joy. Oh, happy day! I made it! I finally had the exact amount we’d agreed upon…. Days later the unthinkable happened. A neighborhood girl I’d played with millions of times appeared with the exact same basket fixed to her shiny, new bike that already had all the bells and whistles. I rode hard and fast home to tell my mother about this disaster, this horrible turn of events. And then came the lesson. I’ve taken with me through my life: “Honey, Your basket is extra-special,” Mom said, gently wiping away my hot tears. “Your basket is special because you paid for it yourself.” 67. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. The children enjoyed doing housework. B. The author came from s well-off family C. The mother raised her children in an unusual way D. The children were fond of the US president’s daughters. 68. By using “naked” (Paragraph 12), the author seems to stress that the basket was____. A. something she could afford B. something important to her C. something impossible to get D. something she could do without 69. To the author, it seemed to be a horrible turn of events that____. A. something spoiled her paying plan B. the basket cost more than she had saved C. a neighborhood girl had bought a new bike D. someone else had got a basket of the same kind 70. What is the life lesson the author learned from her mother? A. Save money for a rainy day B. Good advice is beyond all price. C. Earn your bread with your sweat. D. God helps those who help themselves. 第II卷:非选择题(三部分,共35分) 第一部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) Someone once said to me, “You do show your emotions, but you rarely express your feelings.” What does this sentence mean? If I am showing my emotions through facial expressions, body language, or words, then how can I hide my feelings? Well, the answer is simple. Feelings are deeper than emotions. The face can express many emotions, but it can easily mask what the heart truly feels. Emotions are physical signals that our body is constantly giving us. They occur before you realize it. If you are experiencing fear, you may instantly start panicking, sweating, trembling, etc.. But, once the factor that resulted in the fear has gone, you will be perfectly fine. Basically, emotions can come and go. However, feelings stay. Different emotions accumulate (积累) over time, and as our brain consciously understands them, they transform into feelings. However, while two people may experience similar emotions, their feelings may not be the same. Personal experiences and personalities play an essential role in determining what you feel. Feelings are much richer, have many more layers, and run a lot deeper than emotions. As a result, it is quite tough to get rid of them. For example, you are checking the results of an important exam, and you are obviously anxious, which is an emotion. You pass the exam with flying colors, and you don’t feel anxious any more. Now, consider another scenario (情境) — you fail or get fewer marks in the exam, and then you develop another feeling—worry. Thus, you may worry every time you are given an exam, because you fear to get fewer marks. For another example, someone’s actions may annoy or anger you. These are emotions, which may eventually make you feel bitterness towards that person. Here, bitterness is a feeling. According to neuroscience, emotions are nothing but chemical reactions. These develop as we react to certain stimuli (刺激物). As we start becoming aware of these emotions we begin to understand our feelings better. Your morals and beliefs will play a major role in shaping your feelings. Feelings sustain, whereas emotions are not permanent (永久的), and can be extremely strong. As you can see, emotions and feelings are just two shades of the same color. But this difference is very important. The key to a successful life is to understand and manage your emotions better. You may not be able to change your emotions, but you can change your feelings. Of course, it is easier said than done. But remember, feelings are nothing but thoughts, on a subconscious level, and thoughts can be changed. Feelings and emotions Introduction Feelings are deeper than emotions, because emotions can be shown easily while feelings are easy to (71) ▲ . As a senior student, I think the most important treasures in our life are friendship and ideals. Friendship means a lot to me. I always share sorrows and joys with my friends. Often we offer help each other. Without friends, we would feel lonely and our life would be colorless. Besides friendship, ideals also play an important role in our life. Ideals act as lights in darkness, guiding us forward. Inspired by ideals, we’ll keep moving on. I think a person without ideals is one without hope. However, how can we win true friendship? In my opinion, we should first learn to communicate. Also, it’s important to be generous and kind to others. Learn to give rather than take. As to ideals, ask ourselves what our strengths and weaknesses are and where our interests lie so as to make it clear what we want to be when we grow up. In this way, we can set up ideals, which we will live up to.查看更多
